    Germany
    Description

With the resumption of filming and cinema operations, the order situation has developed well in 2021 and 2022. However, the industry suffered from an increase in production and personnel costs. The high capacity utilisation of the German film production industry and the increasing staff shortage have driven up the salaries of production and production managers as well as assistant directors and production designers. In addition to an increase in material costs, the high energy costs also had a noticeable impact on other budget-relevant costs, such as travel, accommodation and catering costs. At the same time, only just under a quarter of the cost increases in the last two years have been covered by clients, which has put a heavy strain on the sector-specific earnings situation. The assessment of the economic situation in the sector deteriorated noticeably between 2022 and 2024. Turnover fell by an average of 3.4% per year between 2019 and 2024. In the current year, industry revenue is expected to fall by 1.8% to EUR 6.3 billion, primarily due to a decline in orders. While the prospect of a reorientation of federal film funding with new instruments is likely to be the main reason for the decline in orders in the fiction sector, commercial film production and production for private TV clients are suffering from subdued demand from major clients due to the difficult economic situation. The biggest challenges in 2024 include the declining order situation, rising production costs, slow processes at clients, staff shortages and problems with interim financing. The earnings situation is expected to deteriorate further, affecting fiction-producing film companies to a greater extent than non-fiction producers. In the next five years, sales in the industry are expected to grow by an average of 1.1% per year, so that they will probably amount to 6.7 billion euros in 2029. The industry is expected to continue to benefit from the rising demand for German films on the international market, which will be supported by German film funding. At the same time, the willingness of domestic TV broadcasters, the industry's most important sales market, to pay for films is likely to decline as they lose relevance due to competition from streaming service providers. This will limit revenue growth for film and series producers.

    Description

„The German institute for economic research published a study in 1954 which basically was already concluded nine years before. It is based on experiences the institute made during the war in a commissioned work first for the Reich´s ministry of economics and then for the planning department. A manuscript from that time has been preserved, that was mainly designed by the then chief of the industry department, Dr. Rolf Wafenführ… For a long time the study was considered as lost” (from the preface of Ferdinand Friedensburg, president of the German Institute for economic research, November 1954). During the invasion of the allied troops in Berlin the manuscript was taken by an American economic officer and later given to a small University in the United States. In this way it was possible to obtain again the draft of the original work and to prepare the publication. The original composition was brought in a systematic order and it was undergone by a critical scientific inspection. The investigation of Rolf Wagenführt pursues primarily a reporting task, “to show the up and down of the German industry production, especially of the defense production in the years from 1939 until 1945” (Wageführ, R., a. cit., S. 128). The work is divided in five sections. I. The German industry before the outbreak of the war; II. Peace like war economy 1939 until 1942; III. The Speer era; IV. The breakdown; V. Attempt of a preliminary valuation. The present work tries to show which industry forces were available for the belligerent German Empire, therefore the investigation considers always the relevant territory of the Empire. In addition, it was attempted whenever possible, to give an idea of the magnitude of important statistics for the narrower territory of the German Empire. The detailed statistics in the appendix are divides in six sections: (A) workforce; (B) investments; (C) raw and basic materials; (D) consumers goods; (E) defense production; (F) industry production all together. The particulars concerning the war production bear upon the production of “Großdeutschland” (Great Germany); which means that it also includes the production of the occupied territories. Chapters I. to IV. include data about the single periods of the Third Reich, that are shown in the tables G. –to– I.

    Description

The researcher analyzes the progress of the industrial economic development of Germany from 1860 to 1932 ot the basis of empirical material.Using collected statistics and computed indizes he examined wheter the trend of German´s industrial production of goods shows a declining trend of structural nature, or whether the assumption is confirmed that a major upswing is still to come. At first the precise production development with all its structural auxiliary processes is described. After that, the relative development is analysed, in fact by using the industrial development abroad, the development of different induatrial groups, and the development of typical individual industrial goups as standard of comparison. From the entirety of these relations the researcher tries to assess the direction of development of German industry. Importan indizes are as follows: index number of German industrial production from 1913 to 1931 (1928 = 100) Index number of German industrial production from 1860 to 1913 (1913 = 100) and International production figures from 1913 to 1931 (1928 = 100).
