TwitterA global analysis of accessibility to high-density urban centres at a resolution of 1×1 kilometre for 2015, as measured by travel time.
To model the time required for individuals to reach their most accessible city, we first quantified the speed at which humans move through the landscape. The principle underlying this work was that all areas on Earth, represented as pixels within a 2D grid, had a cost (that is, time) associated with moving through them that we quantified as a movement speed within a cost or ‘friction’ surface. We then applied a least-cost-path algorithm to the friction surface in relation to a set of high-density urban points. The algorithm calculated pixel-level travel times for the optimal path between each pixel and its nearest city (that is, with the shortest journey time). From this work we ultimately produced two products: (a) an accessibility map showing travel time to urban centres, as cities are proxies for access to many goods and services that affect human wellbeing; and (b) a friction surface that underpins the accessibility map and enables the creation of custom accessibility maps from other point datasets of interest. The map products are in GeoTIFF format in EPSG:4326 (WGS84) project with a spatial resolution of 30 arcsecs. The accessibility map pixel values represent travel time in minutes. The friction surface map pixels represent the time, in minutes required to travel one metre. This DANS data record contains these two map products.

Transport for London's (TFL) Public Transport Accessibility Levels (PTALs)
PTALS are a detailed and accurate measure of the accessibility of a point to the public transport network, taking into account walk access time and service availability. The method is essentially a way of measuring the density of the public transport network at any location within Greater London.
Each ares is graded between 0 and 6b, where a score of 0 is very poor access to public transport, and 6b is excellent access to public transport.
The current methodology was developed in 1992, by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The model has been thoroughly reviewed and tested, and has been agreed by the London Borough-led PTAL development group as the most appropriate for use across London.

The PTAL methodology was developed for London where a dense integrated public transport network means that nearly all destinations can be reached within a reasonable amount of time. Research using the ATOS (Access to Opportunities and Services) methodology shows that there is a strong correlation between PTALs and the time taken to reach key services – i.e. high PTAL areas generally have good access to services and low PTAL areas have poor access to services.

The GLA has calculated the percentage of population for each ward, LSOA, MSOA and borough within each PTAL. The files for 2014 are available below. The method used mapped the number of addresses (using Ordinance Survey AddressBase Plus, and 2011 Census London Output Areas boundaries).
TFL also publish on their website a tool that shows travel time and PTAL maps from any point within London. Click anywhere on the map or input a postcode to change the selected location.

In August of 2015 a committee was established between multiple Government of Ontario Ministries (MNRF, MTO, OMAFRA, MOECC, CSC, MEDEI/MRI, MCSS) to investigate and provide recommendations on how to best design maps so they are accessible to as wide an audience as possible. To achieve this, it was critical to consider the challenges that persons with disabilities could have when interacting with and interpreting maps.

The document was endorsed in 2016 by the GIS in the OPS Director Manager Working Group (DMWG).
Although there are new and emerging technologies for creating maps for users with disabilities, the majority of this document is intended to assist designers creating map content for a range of users who have full sight to those with moderately low vision who do not use assistive technology.
The document does not address the technology or medium used to generate or publish the final map product, or the accessibility concerns that arise out of any technology, such as those outlined in Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the World Wide Web Consortium for content published on the web.
The concepts described within the document are applicable to map design, regardless of how a map is created, produced, or delivered. Consult with your Ministry's Accessibility Coordinator for assistance in these and other areas of accessibility considerations.

TwitterThis dataset contains model-based place (incorporated and census designated places) estimates in GIS-friendly format. PLACES covers the entire United States—50 states and the District of Columbia —at county, place, census tract, and ZIP Code Tabulation Area levels. It provides information uniformly on this large scale for local areas at four geographic levels. Estimates were provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of Population Health, Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch. PLACES was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in conjunction with the CDC Foundation. Data sources used to generate these model-based estimates are Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) 2022 or 2021 data, Census Bureau 2020 population estimates, and American Community Survey (ACS) 2018–2022 estimates. The 2024 release uses 2022 BRFSS data for 36 measures and 2021 BRFSS data for 4 measures (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cholesterol screening, and taking medicine for high blood pressure control among those with high blood pressure) that the survey collects data on every other year. These data can be joined with the 2020 Census place boundary file in a GIS system to produce maps for 40 measures at the place level. This dataset helps to investigate the Spatial Accessibility to HIV Testing, Treatment, and Prevention Services in Illinois and Chicago, USA. The main components are: population data, healthcare data, GTFS feeds, and road network data. The core components are: 1) GTFS which contains GTFS (General Transit Feed Specification) data which is provided by Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) from Google's GTFS feeds. Documentation defines the format and structure of the files that comprise a GTFS dataset: https://developers.google.com/transit/gtfs/reference?csw=1. 2) HealthCare contains shapefiles describing HIV healthcare providers in Chicago and Illinois respectively. The services come from Locator.HIV.gov. 3) PopData contains population data for Chicago and Illinois respectively. Data come from The American Community Survey and AIDSVu. AIDSVu (https://map.aidsvu.org/map) provides data on PLWH in Chicago at the census tract level for the year 2017 and in the State of Illinois at the county level for the year 2016. The American Community Survey (ACS) provided the number of people aged 15 to 64 at the census tract level for the year 2017 and at the county level for the year 2016. The ACS provides annually updated information on demographic and socio economic characteristics of people and housing in the U.S. 4) RoadNetwork contains the road networks for Chicago and Illinois respectively from OpenStreetMap using the Python osmnx package. The abstract for our paper is: Accomplishing the goals outlined in “Ending the HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) Epidemic: A Plan for America Initiative” will require properly estimating and increasing access to HIV testing, treatment, and prevention services. In this research, a computational spatial method for estimating access was applied to measure distance to services from all points of a city or state while considering the size of the population in need for services as well as both driving and public transportation. Specifically, this study employed the enhanced two-step floating catchment area (E2SFCA) method to measure spatial accessibility to HIV testing, treatment (i.e., Ryan White HIV/AIDS program), and prevention (i.e., Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis [PrEP]) services. The method considered the spatial location of MSM (Men Who have Sex with Men), PLWH (People Living with HIV), and the general adult population 15-64 depending on what HIV services the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends for each group. The study delineated service- and population-specific accessibility maps, demonstrating the method’s utility by analyzing data corresponding to the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois. Findings indicated health disparities in the south and the northwest of Chicago and particular areas in Illinois, as well as unique health disparities for public transportation compared to driving. The methodology details and computer code are shared for use in research and public policy.

Abstract Several cities have highways that cross neighborhoods, especially peripheral ones, causing difficulties in the displacement of affected populations and separating communities from areas where the greatest opportunities for employment and urban services are concentrated. This study aimed to identify the impacts of the barrier effect of a highway on the mobility and accessibility of the population in zones adjacent to a highway in a city in southern Brazil and to analyze the possible consequences on the family budget. The study was developed from the local household survey database, census and socioeconomic information, analysis of thematic maps and the use of linear regression to identify possible relationship between the neighboring and non-neighboring ZT to the stretch under study. It was found that there is evidence between the amount of opportunities for crossing the highway with aspects of family income and population density. There are indications that families that are in income classes of strata C or lower, according to the Brazil criterion, and reside in one of the ZT adjacent to the study area, are investing their few financial resources in the acquisition of motor vehicles, as a strategy for improve their mobility and accessibility conditions.

In recent years, public sports services have attracted great attention owing to their increasingly important role in public health. However, effective evaluation metrics measuring the efficiency of such services from a spatial perspective (e.g., accessibility and distribution of sports parks) remain absent. Indeed, most designs of sports park distribution in urban areas did not consider practical factors such as local road networks, population distribution, and resident preference, resulting in low utilization rates of these parks. In this study, a spatial accessibility-based method is proposed for evaluation of the distributions of sports parks. As a demonstration, the distribution of sports parks in the central urban area of Changsha, China was investigated using the proposed method by the GIS network analysis. Additionally, optimization strategies for sports park distribution (in terms of spatial distribution and overall accessibility) were developed by using spatial syntax.

This study uses the methods of kernel density analysis and service area analysis in GIS to quantify the accessibility of public service facilities for residents within 15-minute living circles. This study takes the Ciqikou block as an example to analyze the distribution of public facilities and the polarization of services in historical blocks, quantifies and evaluates the accessibility of public facilities and the influencing factors of accessibility for residents' walking, and makes an assessment contribution to the sustainable renewal of social transportation and the maintenance of social equity in historical blocks in the later stage, with the aim of providing a useful reference for sustainable urban renewal.

TwitterThe Digital Environmental Geologic-GIS Map for San Antonio Missions National Historical Park and Vicinity, Texas is composed of GIS data layers and GIS tables, and is available in the following GRI-supported GIS data formats: 1.) a 10.1 file geodatabase (saan_environmental_geology.gdb), a 2.) Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) geopackage, and 3.) 2.2 KMZ/KML file for use in Google Earth, however, this format version of the map is limited in data layers presented and in access to GRI ancillary table information. The file geodatabase format is supported with a 1.) ArcGIS Pro map file (.mapx) file (saan_environmental_geology.mapx) and individual Pro layer (.lyrx) files (for each GIS data layer), as well as with a 2.) 10.1 ArcMap (.mxd) map document (saan_environmental_geology.mxd) and individual 10.1 layer (.lyr) files (for each GIS data layer). The OGC geopackage is supported with a QGIS project (.qgz) file. Upon request, the GIS data is also available in ESRI 10.1 shapefile format.
