    Description

Building information modeling (BIM) allows representation of detailed information regarding building elements while geographic information system (GIS) allows representation of spatial information about buildings and their surroundings. Overlapping these domains will combine their individual features and provide support to important activities such as building emergency response, construction site safety, construction supply chain management, and sustainable urban design. Interoperability through open data standards is one method of connecting software tools from BIM and GIS domains. However, no single open data standard available today can support all information from the two domains. As a result, many researchers have been working to overlap or connect different open data standards to enhance interoperability. An overview of these studies will help identify the different approaches used and determine the approach with the most potential to enhance interoperability. This paper adopted a strong definition of interoperability using information technology (IT) based standard documents. Based on this definition, previous approaches towards improving interoperability between BIM and GIS applications through open data standards were studied. The result shows previous approaches have implemented data conversion, data integration, and linked data approaches. Between these methods, linked data emerged as having the most potential to connect open data standards and expand interoperability between BIM and GIS applications because it allows information exchange without editing the original data. The paper also identifies the main challenges in implementing linked data technologies for interoperability and provides directions for future research.

    Description

The paper addresses the integration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) as a framework for structuring and managing information related to networks of public historical buildings. The approach aims to support administrators and decision-makers in assessing both performance and condition of these assets. To this end, the study proposes a methodological workflow encompassing: (i) the development of an interoperable GIS-BIM database that aggregates heterogeneous data at multiple scales, including district, building, and construction component levels, with the latter enhanced by data derived from experimental measurements of both onsite and laboratory tests; (ii) the creation of tailored data exchange routines facilitating bidirectional transfer between GIS and BIM environments, enabling parametric modeling of building elements based on unified descriptors drawn from predefined glossaries; and (iii) the semantic enrichment of HBIM models, incorporating descriptions of decay patterns and enabling integrated visualization of both “as-built” and “as-damaged” conditions within the GIS platform. The methodology is applied to a real case study focusing on the historical building assets of a municipality in southern Italy, within a specialized context, namely systematizing knowledge to support seismic vulnerability assessment. This case study demonstrates the outcomes and potential applications of the proposed framework, contributing to the debate on its implications for enhancing contemporary heritage evaluation and management practices. Centralized relational database is set for GIS-BIM interoperability. GIS-based inventory approach of networked construction materials, components, and performances is established by unified performance descriptors and diagnostic tests. GIS-BIM data exchange routines by programming codes and algorithms are developed in Python. Dynamo “As-built” and “as-damaged” HBIM models are integrated in GIS environment multi-data seismic vulnerability assessment

    Description

Recent advances in Computer Science and the spread of internet connection have allowed specialists to virtualize complex environments on the web and offer further information with realistic exploration experiences. At the same time, the fruition of complex geospatial datasets (point clouds, Building Information Modelling (BIM) models, 2D and 3D models) on the web is still a challenge, because usually it involves the usage of different proprietary software solutions, and the input data need further simplification for computational effort reduction. Moreover, integrating geospatial datasets acquired in different ways with various sensors remains a challenge. An interesting question, in that respect, is how to integrate 3D information in a 3D GIS (Geographic Information System) environment and manage different scales of information in the same application. Integrating a multiscale level of information is currently the first step when it comes to digital twinning. It is needed to properly manage complex urban datasets in digital twins related to the management of the buildings (cadastral management, prevention of natural and anthropogenic hazards, structure monitoring, etc.). Therefore, the current research shows the development of a freely accessible 3D Web navigation model based on open-source technology that allows the visualization of heterogeneous complex geospatial datasets in the same virtual environment. This solution employs JavaScript libraries based on WebGL technology. The model is accessible through web browsers and does not need software installation from the user side. The case study is the new building of the University of Twente-Faculty of Geo-Information (ITC), located in Enschede (the Netherlands). The developed solution allows switching between heterogeneous datasets (point clouds, BIM, 2D and 3D models) at different scales and visualization (indoor first-person navigation, outdoor navigation, urban navigation). This solution could be employed by governmental stakeholders or the private sector to remotely visualize complex datasets on the web in a unique visualization, and take decisions only based on open-source solutions. Furthermore, this system can incorporate underground data or real-time sensor data from the IoT (Internet of Things) for digital twinning tasks.
