    This dataset and its metadata statement were supplied to the Bioregional Assessment Programme by a third party and are presented here as originally supplied.

    This dataset contains 4 different scale GEODATA TOPO series, Geoscience Australia topographic datasets. 1M, 2.5M, 5M and 10M with age ranges from 2001 to 2004.

    1:1 Million - Global Map Australia 1M 2001 is a digital dataset covering the Australian landmass and island territories, at a 1:1 million scale.     1:10 Million - The GEODATA TOPO 10M 2002 version of this product has been completely revised, including the source information. The data is derived primarily from GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 1 data. In October 2003, the data was released in double precision coordinates. It provides a fundamental base layer of geographic information on which you can build a wide range of applications and is particularly suited to State-wide and national applications. The data consists of ten layers: built-up areas, contours, drainage, Spot heights, framework, localities, offshore, rail transport, road transport, and waterbodies.     Dataset History

    1:1Million - Vector data was produced by generalising Geoscience Australia's GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 1 data and updated using Series 2 data where available in January 2001. Raster data was sourced from USGS and updated using GEODATA 9 Second DEM Series 2, 1:5 million, Vegetation - Present (1988) and National Land and Water Resources data. However, updates have not been subjected to thorough vetting. A more detailed land use classification for Australia is available at www.nlwra.gov.au.

    1:10Million - The key source for production of the Builtup Areas, Drainage, Framework, Localities, Rail Transport, Road Transport and Waterbodies layers was the GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 1 product. Some revision of the Builtup Areas, Road Transport, Rail Transport and Waterbodies layers was carried out using the latest available satelite imagery. The primary source for the Spot Heights, Contours and Offshore layers was the GEODATA TOPO 10M Version 1 product. A further element to the production of GEODATA TOPO 10M 2002 has been the datum shift from the Australian Geodetic Datum 1966 (AGD66) to the Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994 (GDA94).

    Description

    The OzEstuaries online GIS contains data for Australian estuaries (coastal waterways) and for oceans in the Australian region. Estuaries data include geomorphic habitat mapping, estuary condition, colour composite images (Landsat, MODIS and Quickbird satellite imagery and aerial photography), benthic classifications (from Landsat satellite imagery), bathymetry and population centres. Oceanic data include dissolved organic matter, chlorophyll concentration, suspended solids concentration and sea surface temperature (using MODIS satellite imagery) and bathymetry.

    The GIS provides facilities to search for and zoom to estuaries, integrate mapping and imagery datasets, and retrieve statistical information from the OzEstuaries database; allowing users to view spatial and statistical information. The oceanic imagery provides a regional context for coastal waterways.

    The GIS is part of Geoscience Australia's contribution to the Cooperative Research Centre for Coastal Zone, Estuary and Waterway Management (Coastal CRC). The geomorphic habitat mapping was conducted by Geoscience Australia for the National Land and Water Resources Audit, and is also part of Geoscience Australia's contribution to the Coastal CRC.

    Description

    Proportional change in effective area of similar ecological environments for Mammals as a function of land clearing within the present long term (30 year average) climate (1990 centred) based on Generalised Dissimilarity Modelling (GDM) of compositional turnover.

    This metric describes the effects of land clearing on the area of similar environments to each grid cell as a proportion. Each cell is compared with a sample of 60,000 points in both uncleared landscape and degraded landscape (pairwise similarities summed (e.g. a completely similar cell will contribute 1, a dissimilar cell 0, with a range of values in between). The contribution of each cell is then multiplied by a 0 (cleared) to 1 (intact) condition index based on the natural areas layer. By dividing the test area by the current area, we are able to quantify the reduction in area as a function of land use/climate change. Values less than one indicate a reduction, values of 1 no change, and values greater than 1 (rare cases in the north) show an increase in similar environments.

    This metric was developed along with others for use in an assessment of the efficacy of the protected area system for biodiversity under climate change at continental and global scales, presented at the IUCN World Parks Congress 2014. It is described in the AdaptNRM Guide “Implications of Climate Change for Biodiversity: a community-level modelling approach”, available online at: www.adaptnrm.org.

    Data are provided in two forms: 1. Zipped ESRI float grids: Binary float grids (.flt) with associated ESRI header files (.hdr) and projection files (.prj). After extracting from the zip archive, these files can be imported into most GIS software packages, and can be used as other binary file formats by substituting the appropriate header file. 2. ArcGIS layer package (.lpk): These packages contain can be unpacked by ArcGIS as a raster with associated legend.

    Additionally a short methods summary is provided in the file 9sMethodsSummary.pdf for further information.

    Layers in this 9s series use a consistent naming convention: BIOLOGICAL GROUP _ FROM BASE_ TO SCENARIO_ ANALYSIS e.g. A_90_CAN85_S or R_90_MIR85_L where BIOLOGICAL GROUP is A: amphibians, M: mammals, R: reptiles and V: vascular plants

    Lineage: Proportional change in the area of similar ecological environments was calculated using the highly parallel bespoke CSIRO Muru software running on a LINUX high-performance-computing cluster, taking GDM model transformed environmental grids as inputs. Proportional change was calculated by taking the area of baseline ecological environments similar to each present cell as the denominator and the area of present cells with their contribution scaled by the natural areas condition index (0 degraded to 1 intact) as the numerator. More detail of the calculations and methods are given in the document “9sMethodsSummary.pdf” provided with the data download.     Description

    This GIS web browser contains stratigraphic information from the southern flank of the Murphy Inlier, Lawn Hill Platform and Leichhardt River Fault Trough in the Western Succession of the Mount Isa Block. The principal lithostratigraphic units covered by this dataset include the Surprise Creek Formation, Mount Isa and McNamara Groups. The images are pixilated versions of those contained on CD Records AGSO Record 1999/10, AGSO Record 1999/15, GA Record 2002/3. The data contained on the CD's is more comprehensive, at a better resolution and also contains cross sections that are not available over the web. No drill hole data is supplied in this viewer. The data compiled for this viewer was collected during the course of the NABRE, AMIRA P552 and pmd*CRC projects. The respective CD's also provide measured sections at different scales with slightly varying information available at 1:400, 1:1000, 1:2500 and 1:5000 scales. The information at each scale is slightly different. Plot files ready for printing also accompany the measured sections. Each of the measured sections contains primary observational data (grainsize, lithology, bed thickness, sedimentary structure and gamma ray curve) map-based lithostratigraphic units as shown on the 1:100,000 geological sheets, interpreted facies and sequence stratigraphic surfaces. Sections were measured using a Jacobs Staff and Abney Level and the rocks were marked in 1.5 m intervals of true thickness. Gamma ray data was collected at either 50 cm or 75 cm intervals of true thickness using hand-held Scintrex GRS 500 spectrometers that measured total gamma ray counts. A beryllium standard was used to calibrate each spectrometer. Each machine was calibrated at intervals of two to three hours. Each gamma reading was averaged over an interval of ten seconds. Outcrop discontinuities prevented the collection of stratigraphic data in a line of continuous section. As a result most of the sections present in this data set comprise a series of segments combined to form a single composite section. The single sections were all measured within a radius of several kilometres of each other. Individual sections were spliced together at prominent marker beds (outcrop tracing of strata), or by the use of overlapping gamma ray curves in conjunction with facies descriptions. Section locations shown in the web browser depict the base of each composite section. Grid coordinates for the base each composite section can be found in the header block of the appropriate section. The geological maps used in this web browser depict the approximate position of supersequence boundaries. Not all the geology for the region has been included and only the geology relevant to the measured sections has been used. The supersequences provided are based on the most appropriate lithostratigraphic boundaries and no new geological polygons have been created. It should be noted that the Torpedo Creek and Warrina Park Quartzites have been placed in the Prize Supersequence. However, we acknowledge that due to mis-mapping of these sand bodies the Torpedo Creek and Warrina Park Quartzites from the basal part of the Gun Supersequence at some locations.

    This dataset was sourced from the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines in 2012. Information provided by the Department describes the dataset as follows:

    This data was originally provided on DVD and contains the converted shapefiles, layer files, raster images and project .mxd files used on the Queensland geology and structural framework map. The maps were done in ArcGIS 9.3.1 and the data stored in file geodatabases, topology created and validated. This provides greater data quality by performing topological validation on the feature's spatial relationships. For the purposes of the DVD, shapefiles were created from the file geodatabases and for MapInfo users MapInfo .tab and .wor files. The shapefiles on the DVD are a revision of the 1975 Queensland geology data, and are both are available for display, query and download on the department's online GIS application.

    The Queensland geology map is a digital representation of the distribution or extent of geological units within Queensland. In the GIS, polygons have a range of attributes including unit name, type of unit, age, lithological description, dominant rock type, and an abbreviated symbol for use in labelling the polygons. The lines in this dataset are a digital representation of the position of the boundaries of geological units and other linear features such as faults and folds. The lines are attributed with a description of the type of line represented. Approximately 2000 rock units were grouped into the 250 map units in this data set. The digital data was generalised and simplified from the Department's detailed geological data and was captured at 1:500 000 scale for output at 1:2 000 000 scale.

    In the ESRI version, a layer file is provided which presents the units in the colours and patterns used on the printed hard copy map. For Map Info users, a simplified colour palette is provided without patterns. However a georeferenced image of the hard copy map is included and can be displayed as a background in both Arc Map and Map Info.

    The geological framework of Queensland is classified by structural or tectonic unit (provinces and basins) in which the rocks formed. These are referred to as basins (or in some cases troughs and depressions) where the original form and structure are still apparent. Provinces (and subprovinces) are generally older basins that have been strongly tectonised and/or metamorphosed so that the original basin extent and form are no longer preserved. Note that intrusive and some related volcanic rocks that overlap these provinces and basins have not been included in this classification. The map was compiled using boundaries modified and generalised from the 1:2 000 000 Queensland Geology map (2012). Outlines of subsurface basins are also shown and these are based on data and published interpretations from petroleum exploration and geophysical surveys (seismic, gravity and magnetics).

    For the structural framework dataset, two versions are provided. In QLD_STRUCTURAL_FRAMEWORK, polygons are tagged with the name of the surface structural unit, and names of underlying units are imbedded in a text string in the HIERARCHY field. In QLD_STRUCTURAL_FRAMEWORK_MULTI_POLYS, the data is structured into a series of overlapping, multi-part polygons, one for each structural unit. Two layer files are provided with the ESRI data, one where units are symbolised by name. Because the dataset has been designed for units display in the order of superposition, this layer file assigns colours to the units that occur at the surface with concealed units being left uncoloured. Another layer file symbolises them by the orogen of which they are part. A similar set of palettes has been provided for Map Info.

ESRI ArcExplorer can be found by a search of www.esriaustralia.com.au and MapInfo ProViewer by a search on www.pbinsight.com.au collectively ("the websites").

    Metadata

    Metadata is contained in .htm files placed in the root folder of each vector data folder. For ArcMap users metadata for viewing in ArcCatalog is held in an .xml file with each shapefile within the ESRI Shapefile folders.

    Description

    This dataset is a series of digital map-posters accompanying the AdaptNRM Guide: Helping Biodiversity Adapt: supporting climate adaptation planning using a community-level modelling approach.

    These represent supporting materials and information about the community-level biodiversity models applied to climate change. Map posters are organised by four biological groups (vascular plants, mammals, reptiles and amphibians), two climate change scenario (1990-2050 MIROC5 and CanESM2 for RCP8.5), and five measures of change in biodiversity.

    The map-posters present the nationally consistent data at locally relevant resolutions in eight parts – representing broad groupings of NRM regions based on the cluster boundaries used for climate adaptation planning (http://www.environment.gov.au/climate-change/adaptation) and also Nationally.

    Map-posters are provided in PNG image format at moderate resolution (300dpi) to suit A0 printing. The posters were designed to meet A0 print size and digital viewing resolution of map detail. An additional set in PDF image format has been created for ease of download for initial exploration and printing on A3 paper. Some text elements and map features may be fuzzy at this resolution.

    Each map-poster contains four dataset images coloured using standard legends encompassing the potential range of the measure, even if that range is not represented in the dataset itself or across the map extent.

    Most map series are provided in two parts: part 1 shows the two climate scenarios for vascular plants and mammals and part 2 shows reptiles and amphibians. Eight cluster maps for each series have a different colour theme and map extent. A national series is also provided. Annotation briefly outlines the topics presented in the Guide so that each poster stands alone for quick reference.

    An additional 77 National maps presenting the probability distributions of each of 77 vegetation types – NVIS 4.1 major vegetation subgroups (NVIS subgroups) - are currently in preparation.

    This dataset has been delivered incrementally. Please check that you are accessing the latest version of the dataset. Lineage: The map posters show case the scientific data. The data layers have been developed at approximately 250m resolution (9 second) across the Australian continent to incorporate the interaction between climate and topography, and are best viewed using a geographic information system (GIS). Each data layers is 1Gb, and inaccessible to non-GIS users. The map posters provide easy access to the scientific data, enabling the outputs to be viewed at high resolution with geographical context information provided.

    Description

    Statewide soil and land information can be discovered and viewed through eSPADE or SEED. Datasets include soil profiles, soil landscapes, soil and land resources, acid sulfate soil risk mapping, hydrogeological landscapes, land systems and land use. There are also various statewide coverages of specific soil and land characteristics, such as soil type, land and soil capability, soil fertility, soil regolith, soil hydrology and modelled soil properties.

    Both eSPADE and SEED enable soil and land data to be viewed on a map. SEED focuses more on the holistic approach by enabling you to add other environmental layers such as mining boundaries, vegetation or water monitoring points. SEED also provides access to metadata and data quality statements for layers.

    eSPADE provides greater functions and allows you to drill down into soil points or maps to access detailed information such as reports and images. You can navigate to a specific location, then search and select multiple objects and access detailed information about them. You can also export spatial information for use in other applications such as Google Earth™ and GIS software.

    eSPADE is a free Internet information system and works on desktop computers, laptops and mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets and uses a Google maps-based platform familiar to most users. It has over 42,000 soil profile descriptions and approximately 4,000 soil landscape descriptions. This includes the maps and descriptions from the Soil Landscape Mapping program. eSPADE also includes the base maps underpinning Biophysical Strategic Agricultural Land (BSAL).

It takes the form of a legal textual description (i.e. a list of grid references, map coordinates, roads and natural landmarks that can be traced to outline the area) along with an associated map.The spatial dataset is an interpretation of the legal textual description based on translating the textual references to geospatial coordinates.     PLEASE NOTE: These data have been updated. See Related Links for new data. Geoscience Australia has the primary role in the delineation of Australia's maritime boundaries. An output of this activity is the development of the Australian Maritime Boundaries (AMB) data. AMB is a GIS data product, replacing AMBIS 2001 Version 1.1, providing access to the data for Australia's Territorial Sea Baseline (TSB) and maritime zones.

    AMB is a digital representation of Australia's territorial sea baseline and boundaries as established under the Seas and Submerged Lands Act 1973. The data also include a representation of the limits by which the adjacent areas of each of the States and of the Northern Territory are determined under the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act 1967. In the event of an inconsistency between AMB data and the baseline and limits under the legislation, the latter prevails.

    The data have been published by Geoscience Australia in consultation with other relevant Commonwealth Government agencies including the Attorney-General's Department, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Hydrographic Office.

    AMB data comprise the TSB and the outer limits of each zone, together with maritime boundaries determined by treaties between Australia and neighbouring countries. Base points that generate the zone boundaries are supplied in separate files and an extensive user guide provides useful background information. All data coordinates are supplied in the World Geodetic System (WGS 84) (ITRF 2000 @ 2000.0) which is effectively identical to the GDA94 datum.

    Geoscience Australia is committed to the maintenance of the maritime boundaries data to ensure it reflects the changing nature of Australia's coastline and hence the various maritime zone limits. The data reflects the location of the coastline within the constraints of available source material at the time of production. Where major differences have since been discovered, these are listed in a table of notes and cautions.

    AMB Data can now also be viewed on-line via AMSIS.

    Federation University Australia ’s Centre for eCommerce and Communications were engaged by
    DIIRD to assist in researching the business case for a GIS application as part of the GippsLink Project, 2010.

    The project stakeholders across six LGAs -Bass Coast Shire; Baw Baw Shire; East Gippsland Shire; Latrobe City; South Gippsland Shire, Wellington Shire participated in an online survey to gauge current usage of online GIS systems and to obtain feedback to ascertain priorities. The results of that survey form this dataset which is stored using Lime survey software. 23 responses were obtained.

    World Imagery provides one meter or better satellite and aerial imagery in many parts of the world and lower resolution satellite imagery worldwide. The map includes 15m TerraColor imagery at small and mid-scales (~1:591M down to ~1:288k) for the world. The map features Maxar imagery at 0.3m resolution for select metropolitan areas around the world, 0.5m resolution across the United States and parts of Western Europe, and 1m resolution imagery across the rest of the world.     CAMRIS incorporates the Australian estuarine database, which includes the National Estuaries Study (Bucher and Saenger 1989, http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/j.1467-8470.1991.tb00726.x). Attributes include location, name, climatic variables, run-off coefficients, land use, flood frequency, water quality, habitat types including seagrass/mangrove/saltmarsh, fisheries/conservation/amenity values, administration, literature and threats.

    Quality - Scope: Dataset. Absolute External Positional Accuracy: Assumed to be correct. +/- one degree. Non Quantitative accuracy: The estuaries coverage contains 1566 points and the following attributes:

    ESTUARY_NO : Inventory number, contains a letter prefix to denote State in which estuary lies. Estuaries are numbered clockwise around the continent.

    NAME : Name of major input stream used to identify an estuary unless the estuary itself is named.

    GEO_ZONE : Set of 12 coastal geographical zones (ACIUCN 1986).

    CLIM_ZONE : Set of 3 named climatic zones.

    CATCH_AREA : Catchment Area (sq km).

    AVE_ANN_RF : Mean annual rainfall (mm), recorded at station nearest estuary.

    RUNOFF_COEF : Runoff figure, best approximation to a catchment average rainfall, usually the average value for the respective drainage basin.

    MAX_TIDAL_RANGE : Maximum tidal range (m).

    WATER_AREA : Water area (sq km).

    SAND-MUD_AREA : Sand and Mud Area (sq km).

    MANGROVE_AREA : Area of Mangroves (sq km).

    ECO_STATUS : Effects of human activity.

    RESEARCH : Depth of information used to assess estuary.

    ADMIN : Statutory classifications that restricts use.

    Conceptual consistency: Coverages are topologically consistent. No particular tests conducted by ERIN. Completeness omission: Complete for the Australian continent. Lineage: ERIN: Projected the estuaries point coverage to geographics with the WGS84 spheroid. The coverage has been attributed with information taken from the Bucher and Saenger (1989) National estuaries inventory.

    CSIRO: Data were stored in VAX files, MS-DOS R-base files and as a microcomputer dataset accessible under the LUPIS (Land Use Planning Information System) land allocation package. CAMRIS was established using SPANS Geographic Information System (GIS) software running under a UNIX operating system on an IBM RS 6000 platform. A summary of data processing follows:

    1. r-BASE: Information imported into r-BASE from a number of different sources (ie Digitised, scanned, CD-ROM, NOAA World Ocean Atlas, Atlas of Australian Soils, NOAA GEODAS archive and Complete book of Australian Weather).

    2. From the information held in r-BASE a BASE Table was generated incorporating specific fields.

    3. SPANS environment: Works on creating a UNIVERSE with a geographic projection - Equidistant Conic (Simple Conic) and Lambert Conformal Conic, Spheroid: International Astronomical Union 1965 (Australia/Sth America); the Lower left corner and the longitude and latitude of the centre point.

    4. BASE Table imported into SPANS and a BASE Map generated.

    5. Categorise Maps - created from the BASE map and table by selecting out specified fields, a desired window size (ie continental or continent and oceans) and resolution level (ie the quad tree level).

    6. Rasterise maps specifying key parameters such as: number of bits, resolution (quad tree level 8 lowest - 16 highest) and the window size (usually 00 or cn).

    7. Gifs produced using categorised maps with a title, legend, scale and long/lat grid.

    8. Supplied to ERIN with .bil; .hdr; .gif; Arc export files .e00; and text files .asc and .txt formats.

    9. The reference coastline for CAMRIS was the mean high water mark (AUSLIG 1:100 000 topographic map series).

    This dataset contains 4 different scale GEODATA TOPO series, Geoscience Australia topographic datasets. 1M, 2.5M, 5M and 10M with age ranges from 2001 to 2004.

    1:1 Million - Global Map Australia 1M 2001 is a digital dataset covering the Australian landmass and island territories, at a 1:1 million scale.     1:10 Million - The GEODATA TOPO 10M 2002 version of this product has been completely revised, including the source information. The data is derived primarily from GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 1 data. In October 2003, the data was released in double precision coordinates. It provides a fundamental base layer of geographic information on which you can build a wide range of applications and is particularly suited to State-wide and national applications. The data consists of ten layers: built-up areas, contours, drainage, Spot heights, framework, localities, offshore, rail transport, road transport, and waterbodies.     Dataset History

    1:1Million - Vector data was produced by generalising Geoscience Australia's GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 1 data and updated using Series 2 data where available in January 2001. Raster data was sourced from USGS and updated using GEODATA 9 Second DEM Series 2, 1:5 million, Vegetation - Present (1988) and National Land and Water Resources data. However, updates have not been subjected to thorough vetting. A more detailed land use classification for Australia is available at www.nlwra.gov.au.

    1:10Million - The key source for production of the Builtup Areas, Drainage, Framework, Localities, Rail Transport, Road Transport and Waterbodies layers was the GEODATA TOPO 250K Series 1 product. Some revision of the Builtup Areas, Road Transport, Rail Transport and Waterbodies layers was carried out using the latest available satelite imagery. The primary source for the Spot Heights, Contours and Offshore layers was the GEODATA TOPO 10M Version 1 product. A further element to the production of GEODATA TOPO 10M 2002 has been the datum shift from the Australian Geodetic Datum 1966 (AGD66) to the Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994 (GDA94).
