This geodatabase serves two purposes: 1) to provide State of Illinois agencies with a fast resource for the preparation of maps and figures that require the use of shape or line files from federal agencies, the State of Illinois, or the City of Chicago, and 2) as a start for social scientists interested in exploring how geographic information systems (whether this is data visualization or geographically weighted regression) can bring new meaning to the interpretation of their data. All layer files included are relevant to the State of Illinois. Sources for this geodatabase include the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Geological Survey, City of Chicago, Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Transit Authority, Regional Transportation Authority, and Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Special Service Areas (SSA) boundaries in Chicago. The Special Service Area program is a mechanism used to fund expanded services and programs through a localized property tax levy within contiguous industrial, commercial and residential areas. The enhanced services and programs are in addition to services and programs currently provided through the city. SSA-funded projects could include, but are not limited to, security services, area marketing and advertising assistance, promotional activities such as parades and festivals, or any variety of small scale capital improvements that could be supported through a modest property tax levy.

This Data is for manuscript "Educating Locally or Everywhere? A Spatial Analysis of Neighborhood Accessibility in Chicago’s Charter Schools for Students of Color ". It has three parts: (1) “Neighborhood Data” contains constructed neighborhood data based on road distance after GIS application, and raw neighborhood data based on census tract before GIS.(2) “School Data” contains school related dependent variables and covariates.(3) “ArcGIS” contains the specific GIS process for constructing neighborhoods along with variable production in mpk format.

This file corrects several problems in the original TIGER/line files, notably the inclusion of parts of Lake Michigan within the city limits, and the numerous irregularities that are a function of the way the TIGER/line files were created. This file will consequently not line up with TIGER/line streets or tracts; it will line up with the 1992 ward boundary file. Its author is Christopher Siciliano.
