The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has been collecting land use data throughout the state and using it to develop agricultural water use estimates for statewide and regional planning purposes, including water use projections, water use efficiency evaluations, groundwater model developments, climate change mitigation and adaptations, and water transfers. These data are essential for regional analysis and decision making, which has become increasingly important as DWR and other state agencies seek to address resource management issues, regulatory compliances, environmental impacts, ecosystem services, urban and economic development, and other issues. Increased availability of digital satellite imagery, aerial photography, and new analytical tools make remote sensing-based land use surveys possible at a field scale that is comparable to that of DWR’s historical on the ground field surveys. Current technologies allow accurate large-scale crop and land use identifications to be performed at desired time increments and make possible more frequent and comprehensive statewide land use information. Responding to this need, DWR sought expertise and support for identifying crop types and other land uses and quantifying crop acreages statewide using remotely sensed imagery and associated analytical techniques. Currently, Statewide Crop Maps are available for the Water Years 2014, 2016, 2018- 2022 and PROVISIONALLY for 2023.

This dataset represents the cadastral maps created by the Geomatics branch in support of real property acquisitions within the Department of Water Resources. The geographic extent of each map frame was created after using all the spatial attributes available in each map to appropriately georeference it and create the extents from the outer frame of the map. The maps were digitally scanned from the original paper format that were archived after moving to the new resources building. As new maps are created by the branch for real property acquisition services, they will be georeference, attributed and updated into this dataset. The associated data are considered DWR enterprise GIS data, which meet all appropriate requirements of the DWR Spatial Data Standards, specifically the DWR Spatial Data Standard version 3.6, dated September 27, 2023. DWR makes no warranties or guarantees either expressed or implied as to the completeness, accuracy, or correctness of the data. CDFW BIOS GIS Dataset, Contact: Joel Dudas, Description: The original topographic maps containing the drawn delta border were scanned from the Department of Water Resources. Images were registered to 1:24,000 USGS DRG's in ArcView (ESRI) utilizing imagewarp extension. The Delta boundary was digitized from the registered images. Accuracy within acceptable 7.5 Minute USGS map accuracy standards (1:24000 scale). Delineates the legal Delta established under the Delta Protection Act (Section 12220 of the Water Code) passed in 1959.
(Webpage Under Development) The Department of Water Resources (DWR) provides Technical Support Services (TSS) to assist Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs) with the implementation of their Groundwater Sustainability Plans (GSPs) and other local entities to better understand groundwater conditions. These services support data collection, groundwater monitoring, and improved understanding of groundwater conditions to help advance sustainable groundwater management efforts across California. Through the TSS program, DWR has partnered with GSAs and other entities on projects across the state to drill and construct groundwater monitoring wells, install groundwater level recording and telemetry equipment, perform downhole camera and geophysical surveys, and collect and analyze groundwater for general chemistry. The data and reports generated from these efforts are publicly available to support ongoing groundwater management and planning. Summary of Completed TSS Projects To date, DWR has completed TSS projects in 35 groundwater subbasins, constructing 234 monitoring wells at 92 sites statewide. Each of these wells have been assigned a State Well Number (SWN), have had a Well Completion Report (WCR) submitted to DWRs Online System for Well Completion Reports (OSWCR), and have been registered either through the California Statewide Groundwater Elevation Monitoring (CASGEM) Online System or the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) Portal’s Monitoring Network Module (MNM). Groundwater level data from these wells are collected by the GSA or DWR and submitted to CASGEM and/or the MNM. These data can be viewed on the Water Data Library (WDL). WCRs for these wells can be found using the Well Completion Report Map Application. In accordance with SB-200, the risk map is to be made available to the public and is to be updated annually starting January 1, 2021. The Fund Expenditure Plan states the risk map will be used by Water Boards staff to help prioritize areas for available SAFER funding.Methodology for the draft aquifer risk map available for download.This layer shows domestic well density. The domestic well density per square mile is based on well completion report data from the Department of Water Resources Online System for Well Completion Reports, excluding wells drilled prior to 1970.

This data set was collected to create a comprehensive platform to visualize SWP owned land. The parcels were created from record parcel information displayed on Department CAD maps known as “Property Management Maps”. This CAD data was then converted to a compatible GIS source and imported as parcels. Each parcel displays the pertinent information regarding the Departments ownership rights and the time that it was acquired or granted. This data set was created to improve the efficiently of accessing and organize the departments land records.
DWR has a long history of studying and characterizing California’s groundwater aquifers as a part of California’s Groundwater (Bulletin 118). The Basin Characterization Program provides the latest data and information about California’s groundwater basins to help local communities better understand their aquifer systems and support local and statewide groundwater management.
Under the Basin Characterization Program, new and existing data (AEM, lithology logs, geophysical logs, etc.) will be integrated to create continuous maps and three-dimensional models. To support this effort, new data analysis tools will be developed to create texture models, hydrostratigraphic models, and aquifer flow parameters. Data collection efforts will be expanded to include advanced geologic, hydrogeologic, and geophysical data collection and data digitization and quality control efforts will continue. To continue to support data access and data equity, the Basin Characterization Program will develop new online, GIS-based, visualization tools to serve as a central hub for accessing and exploring groundwater related data in California.

DWR will undertake local, regional, and statewide investigations to evaluate California's groundwater resources and develop state-stewarded maps and models. New and existing data will be combined and integrated using the analysis tools described below to develop maps and models to be developed will describe the grain size, the hydrostratigraphic properties, and hydrogeologic conceptual properties of California’s aquifers. These maps and models help groundwater managers understand how groundwater is stored and moves within the aquifer. The models will be state-stewarded, meaning that they will be regularly updated, as new data becomes available, to ensure that up-to-date information is used for groundwater management activities. As a part of the Basin Characterization Program, advanced geologic, hydrogeologic, and geophysical data will be collected to improve our understanding of groundwater basins. Data collected under Basin Characterization are collected at a local, regional, or statewide scale depending on the scope of the study.
Lithology and geophysical logging data have been digitized to support the Statewide AEM Survey Project and will continue to be digitized to support Basin Characterization efforts. All digitized lithology logs with Well Completion Report IDs will be imported back into the OSWCR database.

To develop the state-stewarded maps and models outlined above, new tools and process documents will be created to integrate and analyze a wide range of data, including geologic, geophysical, and hydrogeologic information. By combining and assessing various datasets, these tools will help create a more complete picture of California's groundwater basins. All tools, along with guidance documents, will be made publicly available for local groundwater managers to use to support development of maps and models at a local scale. All tools and guidance will be updated as revisions to tools and process documents are made.

The Basin Characterization Exchange (BCX) is a meeting series and network space for the Basin Characterization community to exchange ideas, share lessons learned, define needed guidance, and highlight research topics. The BCX is open to federal, state, and local agencies, consultants, NGOs, academia, and interested parties who participate in Basin Characterization efforts. The BCX also plays a pivotal role in advancing the Basin Characterization Program’s activities and goals. BCX meetings will include regular updates from the Basin Characterization Program and participants can provide feedback and recommendations. Participants will also be provided with early opportunities to test data analysis tools and submit comments on draft process and guidance documents. BCX meetings are (generally) held the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 12:30 - 1:30 pm (PST).

Division of Water Resources Non-Discharge Permits include the following permits: Wastewater Irrigation, Single-Family Residence Wastewater Irrigation, High-Rate Infiltration, Other Wastewater, Closed-Loop Recycle, Reclaimed Water, and Residual Management. Non-Discharge is the treatment of wastewater and disposal/reuse. Non-Discharge is NOT the discharge to surface waters of the state or utilize a sub-surface disposal system (i.e., septic system with leach field). This map includes permit locations, disposal field locations, and monitoring well locations.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources coordinates and conducts leks counts annually to track greater sage-grouse populations. Each spring division staff, university researchers, federal agency personnel, and many others aim to visit each known lek three times to count sage-grouse on their breeding grounds termed “leks”. Leks locations are consistent year to year and counts reflect population numbers. Leks are typically open areas within nesting and brood rearing habitat used by sage-grouse hens. The leks contained in this data set are leks that have been categorized as “Active” meaning that there were two or more male sage-grouse counted in that location in at least two out of the last 10 years.This file is not meant to represent a survey grade location, nor are the intended to be the final authority for habitat delineations, but a guide to areas in the state that should be evaluated for impacts to greater sage-grouse when planning and implementing a project. Leks are represented as points, but are in fact areas of active breeding behavior. Parties should consult with UDWR to determine the precise delineation of habitat for any particular development proposal. If in the review of a proposal or other action, differenced between the maps and the on-the-ground situation become apparent, the on-the-ground habitat delineation shall be the authoritative resource.
Department of Water Resources (DWR), Geodetic Branch, Cadastral Surveys reviewed this boundary in July, 2009, and agreed with the linework along with the description below as produced by Joel Dudas in 2002. This boundary was originally produced under the direction of Ray Irving, LS 3278 in August, 1993 (then Chief of the Geodetic Branch) at the request of Margit Aramburu with the Delta Protection Commission. The boundary, at that time, was paper form. The details of how it was prepared are described in the Memorandum dated July 29, 1994, along with additional correspondence between Ray Irving and Margit Aramburu on comments, changes & revisions during the process and are on file at Cadastral Surveys, DWR. (End 2009)***Delta boundary version 2002.4 Delineates the legal Delta established under the Delta Protection Act (Section 12220 of the Water Code) passed in 1959. This boundary file has been reviewed by a variety of relevant professionals and is considered to be accurate. The exact accuracy is somewhat uncertain, but can be considered acceptable for mapping at 1:24000. The original topographic maps containing the drawn delta border were scanned from the Department of Water Resources. Images were registered to 1:24,000 USGS DRG's in ArcView (ESRI) utilizing imagewarp extension. The Delta boundary was digitized from the registered images. Accuracy within acceptable 7.5 Minute USGS map accuracy standards (1:24000 scale). The original legal boundary maps obtained from the Delta Protection Commission were compiled by DWR Land & Right of Way sometime in the early 1980's. They were based from the legal description in section 12220 of the Water Code, with ambiguities in the Code addressed by the individuals involved in the mapping project at that time. One revision was made to the original maps in the vicinity of Point Pleasant, and is the only difference between this and the 4.2001 version of the legal Delta boundary Arc/INFO coverage.

This dataset is made publicly available pursuant to California Water Code Section 10609.42 which directs the California Department of Water Resources to identify small water suppliers and rural communities that may be at risk of drought and water shortage vulnerability and propose to the Governor and Legislature recommendations and information in support of improving the drought preparedness of small water suppliers and rural communities. (1) Small Water Suppliers: In total, 2,419 small water suppliers were examined for their relative risk of drought and water shortage. Of these, 2,244 are community water systems. The remaining 175 systems analyzed are small non-community non-transient water systems that serve schools for which there is available spatial information. This dataset contains the final risk score and individual risk factors for each supplier examined. Spatial boundaries of water suppliers' service areas were used to calculate the extent and severity of each suppliers' exposure to projected climate changes (temperature, wildfire, and sea level rise) and to current environmental conditions and events. (2) Rural Communities: In total 4,987 communities, represented by US Census Block Groups, were analyzed for their relative risk of drought and water shortage. Communities with a record of one or more domestic well installed within the past 50 years are included in the analysis. Each community examined received a numeric risk score, which is derived from a set of indicators developed from a stakeholder process. Indicators used to estimate risk represented three key components: (1) the exposure of suppliers and communities to hazardous conditions and events, (2) the physical and social vulnerability of communities to the exposure, and (3) recent history of shortage and drought impacts. The unit of analysis for the rural communities, also referred to as "self-supplied communities" is U.S. Census Block Groups (ACS 2012-2016 Tiger Shapefile). The Census Block Groups do not necessarily represent socially-defined communities, but they do cover areas where population resides. Using this spatial unit for this analysis allows us to access demographic information that is otherwise not available in small geographic units.

This is a point feature class of environmental monitoring stations maintained in the California Department of Water Resources’ (hereafter the Department) Water Data Library Database (WDL) for discrete “grab” water quality sampling stations. The WDL database contains DWR-collected, current and historical, chemical and physical parameters found in drinking water, groundwater, and surface waters throughout the state. This dataset is comprised of a Stations point feature class and a related “Period of Record by Station and Parameter” table. The Stations point feature class contains basic information about each station including station name, station type, latitude, longitude, and the dates of the first and last sample collection events on record. The related Period of Record Table contains the list of parameters (i.e. chemical analyte or physical parameter) collected at each station along with the start date and end date (period of record) for each parameter and the number of data points collected. Fish community collection sites are typically located at bridge crossings or other public access points on second, third, and fourth order streams where backpack electrofishing methods can be safely and efficiently applied. Historic NCIBI stations and ratings throughout NC are indicated on the map, representing a site's most recent fish community survey from the early 1990’s through 2022.Last Data Update: 04/26/23
The ETo Zones Map allows users to view the grass-reference evapotranspiration (ETo) Zones for the State of California. The map was developed by DWR and UC Davis in 1999 and divides the State into 18 zones based on long-term monthly average ETo. The ETo values were calculated using data from various data sources, including CIMIS weather stations that had at least five years of archived data. This dataset is the version from 1999.

The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) has been collecting land use data throughout the state and using it to develop agricultural water use estimates for statewide and regional planning purposes, including water use projections, water use efficiency evaluations, groundwater model developments, climate change mitigation and adaptations, and water transfers. These data are essential for regional analysis and decision making, which has become increasingly important as DWR and other state agencies seek to address resource management issues, regulatory compliances, environmental impacts, ecosystem services, urban and economic development, and other issues. Increased availability of digital satellite imagery, aerial photography, and new analytical tools make remote sensing-based land use surveys possible at a field scale that is comparable to that of DWR’s historical on the ground field surveys. Current technologies allow accurate large-scale crop and land use identifications to be performed at desired time increments and make possible more frequent and comprehensive statewide land use information. Responding to this need, DWR sought expertise and support for identifying crop types and other land uses and quantifying crop acreages statewide using remotely sensed imagery and associated analytical techniques. Currently, Statewide Crop Maps are available for the Water Years 2014, 2016, 2018- 2022 and PROVISIONALLY for 2023.
