This service contains the Conservation Overlay Districts (COD) data for New Hanover County, NC. This dataset was created by digitizing Mylar maps and USGS quads from 1973. This is a static dataset. The purpose of the Conservation Overlay District (COD) for conservation resources is to protect important environmental and cultural resources within the County. Protection of these resources is necessary to maintain the County's diverse and ecologically important natural systems; to preserve the County's estuarine systems important for finfishing and shellfishing; to provide open space; and to retain the County's archaeological and historical heritage.

These data were automated to provide an accurate high-resolution historical shoreline of Brunswick/New Hanover Counties - North Carolina suitable as a geographic information system (GIS) data layer. These data are derived from shoreline maps that were produced by the NOAA National Ocean Service including its predecessor agencies which were based on an office interpretation of imagery and/or field survey. The NGS attribution scheme 'Coastal Cartographic Object Attribute Source Table (C-COAST)' was developed to conform the attribution of various sources of shoreline data into one attribution catalog. C-COAST is not a recognized standard, but was influenced by the International Hydrographic Organization's S-57 Object-Attribute standard so the data would be more accurately translated into S-57. Since 2020, the NC Orthoimagery Program has collected 4-band imagery (red, green, blue, near infrared) to support image analysis. The 2024 imagery collection includes the 27 counties representing the Coastal Plain region of North Carolina. This version of the data is presented as true color (red, green, blue) imagery and is best used for general or background viewing. The imagery was flown in early 2024 as part of the NC Orthoimagery Program and has a pixel resolution of 6 inches. The RMSE is 1.0 ft X and Y.
