TwitterA structure evolution map of face-centered cubic (fcc)-structured thiolate-ligand protected gold nanoclusters is outlined on the basis of total structure determination of a new 6e Au21(SR)15 (R = tert-butyl, t-Bu) cluster. The structural evolution map described some basic structural evolution patterns such as a triangle-Au3 and tetrahedron-Au4 associated gold-core evolution pattern and the periodic or symmetric growth of gold cores and ligand shells. According to the structural evolution map, a topological structure–electronic structure relationship is also proposed. The delocalized valence electronic properties of any fcc-structured gold clusters may be expressed as the linear combinations of the molecular orbitals of the fragment 2e units (Au3+ and Au42+). The structural disciplines and topological structure–electronic structure relationships reported in this work laid a basis for understanding the structural evolution and electronic structure of fcc-structured thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters. Particularly, the established structural evolution map provides a tool to explore new magic-sized clusters and cluster structures. In this work, a new fcc-structured 4e Au17(SR)13 and a new isomer structure of the 8e Au28(SR)20 cluster were predicted. The medium-sized fcc-structured gold clusters locating in the size range from 52 to 92 gold atoms and even larger-sized gold clusters can be also explored from the structural regularities described in the map.

TwitterThe North China Craton (NCC), which underwent multiple subduction and lithospheric destruction during the Mesozoic, is well known for hosting some of the world-class gold deposits. In many cases, Mesozoic mafic dykes are associated with the gold deposits, although there has been no systematic studies aimed to integrate the characteristics of these dykes in different regions of the NCC. Here we investigate diabase and lamprophyre dyke suites in the Xiaoqinling region along the southern margin of the NCC, and compile the published geochronological, geochemical and isotopic data for regional mafic dykes and gold deposits from the major gold belts including Jiaodong, Xiaoqinling and central NCC. Zircon U-Pb data show the mafic dykes in Xiaoqinling were emplaced in two episodes at 219–227 Ma and 121–137 Ma, and their εHf(t) values (ranging from −2.1 to 3.8 and −13.6 to 1.6 respectively) suggest increasing input of lithospheric materials in the Early Cretaceous dykes. The compiled geochemical data on the mafic dykes from different regions in the NCC show that the magmatic evolution involved olivine and clinopyroxene fractional crystallization with limited crustal contamination and subduction-related fluid metasomatism. The geochemical and isotopic signature suggests multiple sources for the parent magma of the mafic dykes ranging from convective asthenospheric mantle to ancient lithospheric mantle, with the magma source characterized by enriched mantle (EM2 or EM2+ EM1), and that signatures might be potential for gold mineralization. Further, most dykes are coeval and cospatial with gold deposits in the NCC. The geochronological data show that small amount of both Mesozoic dykes and gold deposits formed in Triassic whereas the peak formed in Cretaceous following slab roll back of the Pacific plate subducting from the east during 145–110 Ma. We envisage that the tectonic extension associated with Pacific slab subduction contributed to the magmatism and gold mineralization in the NCC.

Abstract Some of the world’s largest orogenic gold deposits are hosted within granite-greenstone subprovinces of the Superior Province of Canada. The apparent gold endowment of the western Wabigoon subprovince is much less than that of the Abitibi subprovince, despite both Neoarchean subprovinces sharing similar structural and metallogenic histories. Further, the relationship between regional deformation and orogenic gold mineralizing events in the western Wabigoon subprovince is poorly constrained in comparison to other greenstone belts within the Superior Province. New structural mapping of the Dryden area of the western Wabigoon subprovince indicates that it experienced a N-S shortening event (D1), 2705-2695 Ma, which reactivated, or initiated the formation of, the E-W-trending Wabigoon and Mosher Bay-Washeibemaga deformation zones (Wdz and MBWdz, respectively). Following the D1 event, after 2695 Ma, a protracted period of NNW-SSE shortening (D2) localized transpression along the Manitou Dinorwic deformation zone (MDdz), which is spatially associated with orogenic gold systems, including the Goldlund deposit (~1.7 Moz Au) and Kenwest prospect (~0.3 Moz Au). During D2, the MDdz experienced sinistral transpression, while the Wdz and MDdz experienced dextral-sense movement. U-Pb geochronology of vein-hosted xenotime from the Goldlund deposit and Kenwest prospect indicate that hydrothermal events, and likely gold mineralization, occurred syn- to late- D2 deformation at 2664 ± 8.3 Ma and 2580 ± 12 Ma, respectively. The structural evolution and orogenic metallogeny of the western Wabigoon subprovince is similar to that of anomalously goldrich subprovinces of the Superior Province. Therefore, it is proposed that the structural evolution of individual greenstone belts is not the primary controlling factor on their bulk gold endowment. Nevertheless, orogenic gold deposits are spatially associated with major deformation zones and linked to widespread hydrothermal event(s), spanning 2680-2580 Ma across the southern Superior Province.Link to Thesis: https://zone.biblio.laurentian.ca/handle/10219/3594

Twitterjats:pThe current study focuses on yield and nutritional quality changes of wheat grain over the last 166 years. It is based on wheat grain quality analyses carried out on samples collected between 1850 and 2016. Samples were obtained from the Broadbalk Continuous Wheat Experiment (UK) and from herbaria from 16 different countries around the world. Our study showed that, together with an increase in carbohydrate content, an impoverishment of mineral composition and protein content occurred. The imbalance in carbohydrate/protein content was specially marked after the 1960’s, coinciding with strong increases in ambient [COjats:sub2/jats:sub] and temperature and the introduction of progressively shorter straw varieties. The implications of altered crop physiology are discussed./jats:p
