    Description

According to a January 2021 survey of adults worldwide, 66 percent of total respondents agreed on feeling that tech companies hold too much control over their personal data, while only six percent expressed disagreement with the statement. Consumers based in Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States reported higher levels of concern over data control, with more than seven in ten people feeling that tech companies have too much control over their personal information. While surveyed consumers in Sweden, China, and Indonesia appeared to agree the least with the statement, still more than five in ten reported feeling that tech companies have too much control over their data.

Questionable ethics and security breaches put tech companies under scrutiny

Tech giants, and big tech in particular have been under focus in recent years when it comes to data privacy and consumer-related ethics. While Google has been recipient of not one, but a number of antitrust fines from the EU dating back to 2017, tech giant Yahoo fell victim to various data breaches that resulted in the exposure of 3 billion consumer records in total to date.

    User skepticism is growing

No wonder public trust has faltered. The rise of ad-blockers, VPNs and privacy search engines show that consumers are more eager than ever to protect their data online. In the United States, alternative search engine DuckDuckGo saw a surge in popularity from April 2020 - around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, over half of those surveyed in the UK said that the public exposure of recent data breaches had impacted their willingness to share personal information. The global pandemic has also hit the tech industry, with companies in the tourism sector taking the biggest blow. Booking.com laid off the highest number of employees during 2020, a total of 4375 members of staff.

    Description

Data that is collected at the individual-level from mobile phones is typically aggregated to the population-level for privacy reasons. If we are interested in answering questions regarding the mean, or working with groups appropriately modeled by a continuum, then this data is immediately informative. However, coupling such data regarding a population to a model that requires information at the individual-level raises a number of complexities. This is the case if we aim to characterize human mobility and simulate the spatial and geographical spread of a disease by dealing in discrete, absolute numbers. In this work, we highlight the hurdles faced and outline how they can be overcome to effectively leverage the specific dataset: Google COVID-19 Aggregated Mobility Research Dataset (GAMRD). Using a case study of Western Australia, which has many sparsely populated regions with incomplete data, we firstly demonstrate how to overcome these challenges to approximate absolute flow of people around a transport network from the aggregated data. Overlaying this evolving mobility network with a compartmental model for disease that incorporated vaccination status we run simulations and draw meaningful conclusions about the spread of COVID-19 throughout the state without de-anonymizing the data. We can see that towns in the Pilbara region are highly vulnerable to an outbreak originating in Perth. Further, we show that regional restrictions on travel are not enough to stop the spread of the virus from reaching regional Western Australia. The methods explained in this paper can be therefore used to analyze disease outbreaks in similarly sparse populations. We demonstrate that using this data appropriately can be used to inform public health policies and have an impact in pandemic responses.

    # Loon Flight Data

This data set contains flight data from Loon, a Google project and

later an Alphabet subsidiary that provided wireless internet

access to rural areas using high-altitude balloons. The data set

includes GPS and sensor data from all 2,131 flights across the

project's entire nine-and-a-half year history, from the first sounding

balloon experiment in August 2011 through the last balloon landing in

May 2021. In total the data set comprises over 218 flight-years of

data (over 127 million telemetry points), the vast majority from

altitudes between 50 and 110 hPa (approximately 15.5 to 21 km above

    sea level).

    ## Data

The dataset contains the following fields:

    * **flight_id:** unique identifier representing the flight.

    * **time:** time measurements were taken, in UTC based on GPS.

    * **latitude:** degrees latitude, in the range [-90, 90].

Uncertainty ±2.5 m based on GPS.

    * **longitude:** degrees longitude, in the range [-180, 180).

Uncertainty ±2.5 m based on GPS.

    * **altitude:** geometric altitude, in meters above mean sea

level. Measured at the payload (i.e. the bottom of the

balloon). Uncertainty ±2.5 m based on GPS.

    * **temperature:** ambient temperature, in degrees Kelvin.

    Uncertainty ±5 K during day, ±2 K during night.

    * **pressure:** ambient atmospheric pressure, in

hectopascals. Uncertainty ±1 hPa. Measured at the payload

(i.e. the bottom of the balloon)

    * **earth_ir:** upward long-wave radiative flux, in Watts per meter squared.

    See notes below.

    * **earth_ir_sensor_config:** Denotes sensor configuration type

(i.e. where located on the balloon). See notes below.

    * **acs:** Altitude Control System state: 1 if ascending (increasing

altitude), -1 if descending (decreasing altitude).

    * **propeller_on:** 1 if a propeller is providing lateral thrust,

otherwise 0. If 1 then velocity_u and velocity_v will not be computed.

The following derived fields are computed from the base fields listed

above and are provided for convenience. See notes below for details on

    how they are computed.

    * **velocity_u:** Zonal (west-to-east) component of balloon velocity,

    in meters per second.

    * **velocity_v:** Meridional (south-to-north) component of balloon

    velocity, in meters per second.

    * **omega:** Vertical velocity, in hectopascals/second.

    * **acceleration:** Average change in horizontal velocity over the

sliding window used to compute balloon velocity, in meters per second

    squared.

    * **solar_elevation:** Angle of sun, in degrees relative to horizontal.

    * **solar_azimuth:** Angle of sun, clockwise relative to North.

    * **is_daytime:** 1 if sun is visible from balloon (i.e. not occluded by

    the horizon), otherwise 0.

    ### Notes

Data is sampled at 1 Hz on the balloon, and the most recent telemetry

sample is downlinked every 10 seconds to 20 minutes (typically 1

minute) depending on configuration. Some filtering is performed on the

    balloon.

    #### flight_id

Flight ID is a unique identifier assigned to a particular flight, and

comprises a balloon class (usually a single letter) followed by a dash

and a number. Flights were usually flown in numerical order, though

sometimes a number would be skipped if a launch was scrubbed. Balloon

classes were as follows. The list does not include _Bluebird_,

_Condor_, _Dodo_, _Eagle_ and _Jay_ designs, which were limited-run

designs that were either never flown or brief flights with limited

telemetry. Starting in 2013 (Ibis) most envelopes were manufactured

by Raven Aerostar, though some experimental designs were still built

    in-house.

Height, radius and mass ranges are given below (where

available). Height and radius are at float. _System mass_ is the

combined mass of payload and envelope mass. Starting with the Plover

design balloons also included between 5-25 kg of ballast that could be

dropped to extend the life of the balloon, and any ballast kept after

launch is included in system mass. _Lift-gas mass_ is the mass of lift

gas (Helium) at launch and does not account for leakage over time, nor

does it include air pumped into the ballonette for altitude control.

    Description

Rarely discussed about the Israel–Palestinian conflict is the antagonism that exists between the Palestinian leadership and the refugees. With the advent of the Oslo “peace process” in the 1990s, the antagonism began to escalate, for the process's key assumption became that the leadership would relinquish the refugees' right to return home so that Israel would be preserved as a majority Jewish state in exchange for the Palestinian leadership's sovereignty over the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Because the refugees’ return home would upset the demographic balance of a Jewish-majority state, they have become impossible figures for both Israel and for the Palestinian leadership's political frame, an “impossibility” that is taken for granted in dominant maps of Palestine/Israel. This article highlights some ways the refugees have refused this erasure by mapping onto the land their historical presence. Taking their use of Google Earth as a case study, it begins by providing background on Google Earth, situating the software's prehistory within Cold War battles for surveillance and control. It then points to some “cracks” Google Earth's introduction has presented the post–Cold War political scene with: namely, that nation-states are today stumbling to control with whom maps are shared, who can make them, and what they will look like. It then moves on to show how the refugees have taken advantage of the State of Israel's (as well as the Palestinian leadership's) inability to control the map, in the process rendering the geoweb a new battlefield in the conflict. I conclude with an analysis of how cartographically placing Israel's founding and perpetual violence at the fore, as the Palestinian refugees' counter-cartography does, can help to move forward the refugees' demands for justice. Key Words: counter-cartography, geoweb, Google, Palestine, qualitative GIS, social movements.
