Welcome to the Opportunity Insights Economic Tracker! Our goal is to provide a comprehensive, real-time look into how COVID-19 and stabilization policies are affecting the US economy. To do this, we have compiled a wide array of data points on spending and employment, gathered from several sources.
This dataset includes daily/weekly/monthly information at the state/county/city level for eight types of data: Google Mobility; Low-Income Employment and Earnings; UI Claims; Womply Merchants and Revenue; as well as weekly Math Learning from Zearn. Additionally, three files- Accounting for Geoids-State/County/City provide crosswalks between geographic areas that can be merged with other files having shared geographical levels.
Our goal here is to enable data users around the world to follow economic conditions in the US during this tumultuous period with maximum clarity and precision. This dataset provides US COVID-19 case and death data, as well as Google Community Mobility Reports, on the state/county level. Here is how to use this dataset:

- Review metadata variables: Become familiar with the provided variables so that you can select which ones you need to explore further in your analysis. For example, if analyzing mobility trends at a city level look for columns such as ‘Retailer_and_recreation_percent_change’ or ‘Transit Stations Percent Change’; if focusing on employment decline look for columns such pay or emp figures that align with industries of interest to you such as low-income earners (emp_{inclow},pay_{inclow}).
- Unify dateformatting across row values : Convert date formats into one common unit so that all entries have consistent formatting if necessary; for exampe some entries may display dates using YYYY/MM/DD notation while others may use MM//DD//YY format depending on their source datasets; make sure to review column labels carefully before converting units where needed..

Diversity in Tech Statistics: In today's tech-driven world, discussions about diversity in the technology sector have gained significant traction. Recent statistics shed light on the disparities and opportunities within this industry. According to data from various sources, including reports from leading tech companies and diversity advocacy groups, the lack of diversity remains a prominent issue. For example, studies reveal that only 25% of computing jobs in the United States are held by women, while Black and Hispanic individuals make up just 9% of the tech workforce combined. Additionally, research indicates that LGBTQ+ individuals are underrepresented in tech, with only 2.3% of tech workers identifying as LGBTQ+. Despite these challenges, there are promising signs of progress. Companies are increasingly recognizing the importance of diversity and inclusion initiatives, with some allocating significant resources to address these issues. For instance, tech giants like Google and Microsoft have committed millions of USD to diversity programs aimed at recruiting and retaining underrepresented talent. As discussions surrounding diversity in tech continue to evolve, understanding the statistical landscape is crucial in fostering meaningful change and creating a more inclusive industry for all. Editor’s Choice In 2021, 7.9% of the US labor force was employed in technology. Women hold only 26.7% of tech employment, while men hold 73.3% of these positions. White Americans hold 62.5% of the positions in the US tech sector. Asian Americans account for 20% of jobs, Latinx Americans 8%, and Black Americans 7%. 83.3% of tech executives in the US are white. Black Americans comprised 14% of the population in 2019 but held only 7% of tech employment. For the same position, at the same business, and with the same experience, women in tech are typically paid 3% less than men. The high-tech sector employs more men (64% against 52%), Asian Americans (14% compared to 5.8%), and white people (68.5% versus 63.5%) compared to other industries. The tech industry is urged to prioritize inclusion when hiring, mentoring, and retaining employees to bridge the digital skills gap. Black professionals only account for 4% of all tech workers despite being 13% of the US workforce. Hispanic professionals hold just 8% of all STEM jobs despite being 17% of the national workforce. Only 22% of workers in tech are ethnic minorities. Gender diversity in tech is low, with just 26% of jobs in computer-related sectors occupied by women. Companies with diverse teams have higher profitability, with those in the top quartile for gender diversity being 25% more likely to have above-average profitability. Every month, the tech industry adds about 9,600 jobs to the U.S. economy. Between May 2009 and May 2015, over 800,000 net STEM jobs were added to the U.S. economy. STEM jobs are expected to grow by another 8.9% between 2015 and 2024. The percentage of black and Hispanic employees at major tech companies is very low, making up just one to three percent of the tech workforce. Tech hiring relies heavily on poaching and incentives, creating an unsustainable ecosystem ripe for disruption. Considering that the total number of Google employees increased greatly between the years 2007 and 2020, the female quota among the employees had seen rather a small increase. Saudi Aramco led the ranking of the world's most profitable companies in 2023, with a pre-tax income of nearly 250 billion U.S. dollars. How are market value and market capitalization determined? Market value and market capitalization are two terms frequently used – and confused - when discussing the profitability and viability of companies. Strictly speaking, market capitalization (or market cap) is the worth of a company based on the total value of all their shares; an important metric when determining the comparative value of companies for trading opportunities. Accordingly, many stock exchanges such as the New York or London Stock Exchange release market capitalization data on their listed companies. On the other hand, market value technically refers to what a company is worth in a much broader context. It is determined by multiple factors, including profitability, corporate debt, and the market environment as a whole. In this sense it aims to estimate the overall value of a company, with share price only being one element. Market value is therefore useful for determining whether a company’s shares are over- or undervalued, and in arriving at a price if the company is to be sold. Such valuations are generally made on a case-by-case basis though, and not regularly reported. For this reason, market capitalization is often reported as market value. What are the top companies in the world? The answer to this question depends on the metric used. Although the largest company by market capitalization, Microsoft's global revenue did not manage to crack the top 20 companies. Rather, American multinational retailer Walmart was ranked as the largest company in the world by revenue. Walmart also had the highest number of employees in the world.

In the first quarter of 2023 alone, more than 167 thousand employees had been fired worldwide, a record number of job cuts in a single quarter and more than all of the layoffs announced in 2022 combined, marking a harsh start to 2023 for the tech sector. From retail to finance and education, all sectors are suffering from this widespread downsizing. However, retail tech startups were hit the most, with almost 29 thousand layoffs announced as of September 2023. Most job losses happened in the United States, where tech giants like Amazon, Meta, and Google are based. Reasons behind increasing tech layoffs Layoffs in the technology sector started with the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when entire cities were in lockdown and mobility was restricted. Although restrictions loosened up in 2021, events such as the Russia-Ukraine war, the downturn in Chinese production, and rising inflation had a significant impact on the tech industry and continue to represent major concerns for tech companies. As a consequence, companies across the world have yet to overcome all economic challenges, examples of which are rising material and labor costs, as well as decreasing profit margins. To address such difficulties, tech companies have appointed business plans. A 2022 forecast predicted the number of Google Pay users in the United States would grow by more than *** million between 2022 and 2026. This prediction was from before May 2022, however. That month, Google announced it would replace Google Pay altogether with a resurrected Google Wallet app in ** countries across the world, except the U.S., Singapore, and India.
Google Pay used more often on websites outside the United States Website tracking focusing on payment technologies indicates Google Pay is used more often on websites from Canada, New Zealand or Ireland than on U.S. websites or platforms from Europe. Nearly **** percent of merchants in Italy with at least one Payment Acceptance or Payment Processor technology up to August 2023 had Google Pay on their website. Websites from India ranked relatively low in this list, potentially indicating Google Pay is either used more as an offline payment method or that Google Pay is integrated within UPI in the country.
