This monthly statistics notice includes information on the number of cattle, sheep and pigs slaughtered in the United Kingdom for human consumption, the average dressed carcase weights and the quantity of meat produced in the United Kingdom.
The quarterly meat supplies dataset includes information on beef and veal, sheep, pig and poultry meat production, trade and domestic supplies. This dataset is only updated in March, June, September and December.
Data from the cattle, sheep and pig slaughter statistics are an invaluable evidence base for policy makers, academics and researchers. The data is also heavily relied upon by livestock industry, including divisions of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). The cattle, sheep and pig slaughter statistics are used for the numbers of slaughtering’s and meat production to assess the current state of the industry and predict the available supplies of meat for the coming year. This, in turn, can affect meat prices and trade decisions on levels of imports and exports to maintain supply.

This publication gives estimates of land use, livestock populations and the agricultural workforce for England from the June Survey of Agriculture and Horticulture run by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in June 2021.
Information about the uses and users of the June survey of agriculture and horticulture is available on https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/654304/structure-juneusers-24oct17.pdf" class="govuk-link">gov.uk.

These datasets present annual land and crop areas, livestock populations and agricultural workforce estimates broken down by farm type, size and region. More detailed geographical breakdowns and maps are updated every 3 to 4 years when a larger sample supports the increased level of detail. Longer term comparisons are available via links in the Historical timeseries section at the bottom of this page.
The results are sourced from the annual June Survey of Agriculture and Horticulture. The survey captures data at the farm holding level (historically based on individual farm locations) so most data is presented on this basis. Multiple farm holdings can be owned by a single farm business, so the number of farm holdings has also been aggregated to farm businesses level as a way of estimating the number of overall farming enterprises for England only.
Key land use & crop areas, livestock populations and agricultural workforce on individual farm holdings in England broken down by farm type or farm size bands and for the UK broken down by farm size bands.
Number of farm businesses by farm business type and region in England. Individual farm holdings are aggregated to a business level. In most cases, a farm business is made up of a single farm holding, but some businesses are responsible for multiple farm holdings, often in different locations.
Key land use & crop areas, livestock populations and agricultural workforce on individual farm holdings in England broken down by various geographical boundaries.
The Local Authority dataset was re-published on 15th April 2025 to correct an error with the 2024 data.
This publication gives estimates of crop areas and livestock populations for England from the June Census of Agriculture and Horticulture run by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in June 2021.
The Agriculture and Horticulture survey in England is run on 1 June each year. Every ten years a full census is run however, the census planned for 2020 was postponed due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Instead, all commercial holdings in England with significant levels of farming activity were asked to complete a questionnaire in 2021 and the results are published in this statistics notice. Also included is information about census methodology, response rates and analysis (please see section 2).
You can find information about the users and uses of the June survey of agriculture and horticulture on the June survey notes and guidance page.

This data series presents statistics on tuberculosis (TB) in cattle (i.e. bovine TB) in Great Britain. The statistics are obtained from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) work management IT support system, which is used for the administration of TB testing in GB. They are a snapshot of the position on the date on which the data were extracted. The information is subject to regular revision until all test results are available.
A full national statistical notice including headline data is updated every quarter, as is this data series.
This release presents results from an annual inventory for monitoring livestock breed populations and breeding structures. It provides data on the status and trends in the domestic cattle, sheep, pig, goat and horse farm animal genetic resources (FAnGR) with continuous data from 2000 to 2024 for around 100 breeds of cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and horses which are present in the UK.
Included on this page is also an Official Statistics in Development release for the genetic resources of domestic poultry animals covering: Chickens; Ducks; Geese and Turkeys. This release includes the poultry inventory dataset and a release note. The poultry inventory has not be updated for the 2024, however the inventory will resume for the 2025 data collection.
Data from the farm animal genetic resources statistics are an invaluable evidence base for policy makers, academics and researchers. The data is also heavily relied upon by the UKGLE committee and the UK government. The farm animal genetic resources data is used to:
-Enhance knowledge of population size and prevent the loss of breeds
-Support strategic planning for the sustainable utilisation of animal genetic resources
-Improve priority setting for conservation programmes
-Enhance knowledge of cross-border genetic linkages
-Raise public awareness
-Fulfil reporting obligations.

In 2022, the population of cattle and calves in the United Kingdom was approximately 9.42 million, a slight decrease from the previous year. 2020 was the lowest number for the entire period shown in this graph. Despite a small rebound in 2014 and 2015 this constitutes a slow long-term decline of herd sizes.
Beef production
In 2021, just under two million animals that can be considered prime cattle were slaughtered. Older adult animals and calves amounted for slightly over 800,000 slaughtered animals. The average prime cattle carcass weighed 346 kilograms in 2020. As of the 6th of July 2019, prices for deadweight prime cattle reached a low of 327.5 p/kg. It is likely that more environmentally conscious and ethically minded consumers, which drive the trend for an increased demand of plant-based food, are responsible for the currently low price, which is decidedly under the five-year average.
Environmental impact
Beef consistently ranks among the most environmentally damaging food products. It produces the highest acidifying emissions per gram of protein, the most eutrophying (over enriching water with nutrients and minerals) emissions per gram of protein and requires the most water per ton of meat. Only lambs and sheep use more land per 100 grams of protein produced than cows. Both meat types have a higher CO² footprint than any other food. The enteric fermentation of the cows is the primary source for their greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions amounted to 18.1 million tons of CO² equivalent in the UK in 2021.

This series includes the accredited official statistic publications on tuberculosis (TB) in cattle (bovine TB) in each of the three countries in Great Britain: England, Scotland, Wales. The statistics are reported at the county level for all countries, at the TB risk area level for England, and at the TB area level for Wales. It is important to note that TB control is a devolved policy, and as such control policies differ across the three countries as outlined in the releases and supplementary material.
From 1 July 2025 https://tbstatistics.github.io/interactive_dashboard/" class="govuk-link">https://tbstatistics.github.io/interactive_dashboard/ is temporarily the only way of viewing the TB interactive dashboard. We are aware that it may take several minutes to load, particularly over a slow internet connection. Work is underway to improve its functionality.
