    Description

This table contains data on the revenues of the general government sector. The revenues of the general government sector consist of tax revenues, social contributions receivable, income from productive activities, other current revenues and capital transfers receivable. The terms used are in line with the National Accounts. The national accounts are based on the international definitions of the European System of Accounts (ESA 2010). The transaction time determines the time of booking. The data presented are in line with the publications on the National Accounts. There may be small temporary differences with the publications of the National Accounts due to the fact that the published figures of the government accounts are sometimes more up-to-date.

The data in this table are consolidated, i.e. mutual flows are eliminated. As a result, the expenditure and revenues of the sub-sectors do not add up to the total expenditure and revenues of general government. Payments from, for example, the central government to the municipalities are part of the expenses of the central government and the income of municipalities. They do not count towards the expenditure and income of the general government, as they are payments from the government to the government.

Data available from: Annual figures from 1995, quarterly figures from 1999.

Status of figures: The figures in this table have definitive status for the period 1995-2021. The 2022 quarters have the status provisionally. The annual figures for 2022 have the status definitive. The figures for 2023 and 2024 are provisional.

Changes as of 24 June 2024: Figures for the first quarter of 2024 are available. The figures for the quarters of 2021 and 2022 are now final. As part of the revision policy of the National Accounts, the annual figures from 1995 and the quarterly figures from the first quarter of 1999 have been revised.

When will there be new figures? The first figures of the most recent quarter are published three months after the end of a quarter. The first quarter can then be adjusted in September, the second quarter in December and the first three quarters in March. The first annual figures shall be published three months after the end of the reporting year. Subsequently, the annual figures are adjusted twice: six and eighteen months after the end of the reporting year. In addition, interim updates may take place to provide the European Commission with the most up-to-date government data at the end of March and the end of September. The data for the quarters are linked to the adjusted annual figures. The updated annual and quarterly figures are published at the end of June each year. Information on the revision policy of National Accounts can be found under section 3 'relevant articles'.

    Description

This table contains administrative data on a quarterly basis about revenue and expenditure of the other local government. These figures differ from the National Accounts composed in accordance with ESA standards. No corrections are made for potential errors in the source data. With this table, the Netherlands meets the requirements as laid down in the Directive EU 2011/85. This directive is part of the Enhanced Economic Governance package ('Sixpack'), adopted by the European Council in 2011. In 2024 Directive EU 2024/1265 was adopted by the European Council. With that, the publication requirements of EU Directive 2011/85 have been changed. Statistics Netherlands has therefore decided to discontinue this publication as of reporting period first quarter of 2024.

Statistics Netherlands published the revised National Accounts in June 2018. Among other things, GDP and total government expenditures have been adjusted upwards as a result of the revision. As part of the revision, the determination of the population of local non-profit institutions has been improved qualitatively. The observed population has grown in size. From the first quarter of 2018 onwards, administrative data of the other local government will be published after revision in this table. The figures for the previous quarters have not been adjusted based on the revision. Between the fourth quarter of 2017 and the first quarter of 2018, a break occurs as a result of the changed observed population of local non-profit institutions.

Figures available from first quarter of 2014 to first quarter of 2024.

Status of the figures: The figures for the year 2024 are provisional, the figures for the period 2014-2023 are definite. Because this table is discontinued, figures will not be updated anymore.

Changes as from 28 August 2024: None, this table is discontinued.

When will new figures be published? Not applicable anymore.

    Description

This table contains cash-based data on a monthly basis about revenue and expenditure and the central government balance sheet. Data are provided by the accounting departments of the relevant public institutions. The figures in this table are presented on a cash basis, which means that the criterion for the booking is the moment the payment is made. The figures presented here do not comply with the publications on National Accounts. Statistics Netherlands has therefore decided to discontinue this publication as of reporting period June 2024. Every five years, Statistics Netherlands revises the National Accounts. Among other things, GDP and government finance statistics are adjusted. As part of the revision, the determination of the population of central government is improved qualitatively. Additionally, classifications of expenditure and revenue change. The administrative data of the central government is published according to the current compilation method. The figures for previous periods are however not revised, which leads to a break in the time series. Therefore, figures of December 2023 and January 2024 are not fully comparable. This is also the case for the figures until December 2017 and the figures of January 2018 and onwards, when the compilation was also adjusted because of a revision. Figures available from January 2014 to June 2024. Status of the figures: Figures for October, November, December 2023, April and May 2024 are provisional. Figures for January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September 2023, January, February and March 2024 are revised provisional and figures for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 are final. Because this table is discontinued, figures will not be updated anymore. Changes as from 28 August 2024: None, this table is discontinued. When will new figures be published? Not applicable anymore.

    Description

This table contains data on a quarterly basis about revenue and expenditure and the balance of the main units of local government: municipalities, provinces, communal arrangements and public water boards. Data are extracted from the administration of the respective local government units. This means that these figures are compiled according to the national law for the financial administration for the local government units (the law 'Besluit Begroting en Verantwoording gemeenten en provincies' – BBV) and consequently, differ from the figures of the national accounts composed in accordance with ESA standards. No corrections are made for potential errors in the source data. However, if the provided local government data are of poor quality, they are not used but replaced by estimated figures. Figures available from first quarter of 2014 to first quarter of 2024.

Status of the figures: The status of all recent figures is provisional. When figures for a new quarter are published, the provisional figures of the previous quarter may be adjusted. The annual figures are published in December, one year after the end of the reporting year. Because this table is discontinued, figures will not be updated anymore.

Changes as from 28 August 2024: None, this table is discontinued.

(Seasonal adjusted) government revenue, (seasonal adjusted) government expenditure and (seasonal adjusted) balance of general government have been adjusted. Additionally, government revenue has been adjusted as of the fourth quarter of 2006 related to the dividend tax. The revised registration aligns more closely with the accrual principle of ESA 2010.

Changes as of 10 April 2025: Due to an error made while processing the data, the initial preliminary figures for government expenditure in 2024 were calculated incorrectly, which means that the figure published for the general government balance was also incorrect. It concerns a decrease in government expenditure. Therefore, the general government balance is 2.3 billion euros higher than originally reported. This means the government deficit is equivalent to 0.9 percent of GDP, rather than the 1.1 percent published previously. (Seasonal adjusted) government revenue, (seasonal adjusted) government expenditure and (seasonal adjusted) balance of general government have been adjusted.

When will new figures be published? Initial quarterly figures are published three months after the end of the quarter. In September the figures on the first quarter are revised, in December the figures on the second quarter are revised and in March the first three quarters are revised. Yearly figures are published for the first time three months after the end of the year concerned. Yearly figures are revised two times: 6 and 18 months after the end of the year. Please note that there is a possibility that adjustments might take place at the end of March or September, in order to provide the European Commission with the latest figures. Revised yearly figures are published in June each year. Quarterly figures are aligned to revised years at the end of June. More information on the revision policy of National Accounts can be found under 'relevant articles' under paragraph 3.

    Description

This table gives an overview of government expenditure on regular education in the Netherlands since 1900. All figures presented have been calculated according to the standardised definitions of the OECD.

Government expenditure on education consists of expenditure by central and local government on education institutions and education. Government finance schools, colleges and universities. It pays for research and development conducted by universities. Furthermore it provides student grants and loans, allowances for school costs, provisions for students with a disability and child care allowances to households as well as subsidies to companies and non-profit organisations.

Total government expenditure is broken down into expenditure on education institutions and education on the one hand and government expenditure on student grants and loans and allowances for school costs to households on the other. If applicable these subjects are broken down into pre-primary and primary education, special needs primary education, secondary education, senior secondary vocational and adult education, higher professional education and university education. Data are available from 1900. Figures for the Second World War period are based on estimations due to a lack of source material.

The table also includes the indicator government expenditure on education as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP). This indicator is used to compare government expenditure on education internationally. The indicator is compounded on the basis of definitions of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development). The indicator is also presented in the StatLine table education; Education expenditure and CBS/OECD indicators. Figures for the First World War and Second World War period are not available for this indicator due to a lack of reliable data on GDP for these periods.

The statistic on education spending is compiled on a cash basis. This means that the education expenditure and revenues are allocated to the year in which they are paid out or received. However, the activity or transaction associated with the payment or receipt can take place in a different year.

Statistics Netherlands published the revised National Accounts in June 2018. Among other things, GDP has been adjusted upwards as a result of the revision. The revision has not been extended to the years before 1995. In the indicator “Total government expenditure as % of GDP”, a break occurs between 1994 and 1995 as a result of the revision.

    Data available from: 1900

Status of the figures: The figures from 1995 to 2020 are final. The 2021 figures are revised provisional, the 2022 figures are provisional.

Changes on 7 December 2023: The revised provisional figures of 2021 and the provisional figures of 2022 have been added.

When will new figures be published? The final figures for 2021 will be published in the first quarter of 2024. The final figures for 2022 and the provisional figures for 2023 will be published in December 2024.

In addition to the federal government and the 50 state governments, the Census Bureau recognizes five basic types of local governments. The government types are: County, Municipal, Township, Special District, and School District. Of these five types, three are categorized as General Purpose governments: County, municipal, and township governments are readily recognized and generally present no serious problem of classification. However, legislative provisions for school district and special district governments are diverse. These two types are categorized as Special Purpose governments. Numerous single-function and multiple-function districts, authorities, commissions, boards, and other entities, which have varying degrees of autonomy, exist in the United States. The basic pattern of these entities varies widely from state to state. Moreover, various classes of local governments within a particular state also differ in their characteristics. No local governments are included. For the purpose of Census Bureau statistics, the term "state government" refers not only to the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of a given state, but it also includes agencies, institutions, commissions, and public authorities that operate separately or somewhat autonomously from the central state government but where the state government maintains administrative or fiscal control over their activities as defined by the Census Bureau.
