Households in Great Britain will have their energy bills capped at 2,500 British pounds per year from October 2022 onwards, due to the measures introduced by the UK government in September of 2022. This will result in savings of around 1,050 for the average household, compared with the previous price cap, which was set to increase to 3,459 per year.

In 2024, the retail price of electricity for residential customers in the United States averaged 16.48 U.S. cents per kilowatt-hour. Households are charged more than the commercial and industrial sectors, because of the higher distribution costs. Since 2020, electricity customers have seen electricity prices increase in the U.S. and peak in 2024. The U.S. electricity market The U.S. electricity market is led by several types of electricity providers, such as cooperatives, municipal systems, and shareholder-owned electric utilities. In 2022, cooperatives were the most common type of ownership in the U.S., with more than 600 providers. That year, the U.S. electric utility industry revenue amounted to 488 billion U.S. dollars. Electricity prices around the world Electricity prices vary widely from country to country, depending on energy sources used, as well as government and industry subsidies and regulations. In 2023, Ireland and the United Kingdom had some of the highest household electricity prices worldwide. Meanwhile, U.S. households paid some of the lowest prices. However, leading oil and gas-producing regions such as the Middle East registered the cheapest rates overall.

Electricity prices for businesses amounted to *** cents per kilowatt-hour on the U.S. dollar in China in June 2024. Business electricity prices decreased in the country from over **** cents per kilowatt-hour in June 2020. Household electricity in China was cheaper, amounting to *** cents per kilowatt-hour in March 2024. Overhauling price calculation Since its liberalization of the state electricity market, the National Development and Reform Commission introduced an overhaul of the electricity pricing model in mid-2023. Based on the premise of “cost plus reasonable profit” the reforms were aimed at introducing fairer and more transparent rates while also promoting more efficient utilization of the electricity grid. In the new system, businesses enjoy lower electricity rates if they use higher voltages, reflecting a more accurate distribution of grid utilization costs. Competition in industrial policy For many years, the Chinese government has been accused of using subsidized electricity prices to give domestic companies an advantage on the world market. In the EV race, they come up again. To accelerate the industrialization of the country, policymakers have set up ambitious development goals and created the necessary framework to achieve them. For instance, electric battery manufacturers could utilize significant government support. However, often, subsidies like preferential electricity prices are difficult to prove, and in response to European and American accusations, Beijing points to the Inflation Reduction Act in the U.S. and similar subsidy programs in the European Union.
In the second half of 2024, electricity prices for the industry in Poland exceeded **** euros per kilowatt-hour. Electricity prices in households in Poland The energy intensity of enterprises in Poland is one of the highest in the European Union and much higher than in Western European countries. Companies cannot compensate for rising energy prices in the prices of their products. Therefore, they are forced to seek other alternatives. Rising electricity prices for the industry are pushing entrepreneurs not only to save energy but also to look for their own sources of energy production, which would ultimately improve energy efficiency and reduce operating costs for many enterprises. Electricity prices for households in Poland amounted to **** euros per kilowatt-hour in the second half of 2023. The low prices in 2019 were mainly the result of the government's freezing of electricity prices to final recipients. However, the government increased energy prices from 2020. This will meant an increase in the cost of living for the average citizen. Not only energy prices rose, but also the prices of goods and services dependent on energy. Wholesale electricity prices in Poland Wholesale electricity prices in Poland were the highest in Central and Eastern Europe as of February 2024. Prices ranged increased from ***** zloty per megawatt-hour in March 2018 to nearly *** thousand zloty per megawatt-hour in August 2022. The increase in wholesale electricity prices is mainly due to the price of coal. Coal is the primary fuel used to produce energy in Poland. In 2019, ** TWh of power was produced from hard coal and ** TWh from lignite. Another reason for higher energy prices is the rising price of CO2 emission allowances and the expected increase in generation capacity in the heating sector.

The system marginal price (SMP) for electricity in South Korea stood at around ******South Korean won per kilowatt-hour as of March 2025. The South Korean government introduced the SMP ceiling system at the end of 2022, which limits the wholesale price at which Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) purchases electricity from power generation companies to protect energy consumers during times of price fluctuations. KEPCO is a public institution responsible for the distribution of electricity in South Korea. In the last 10 years, electricity consumed per capita in South Korea has seen a steady increase. Sustainable energy sources in South Korea South Korea imports over ** percent of its energy, which primarily originates from fossil fuels. But as demand continues to rise, the country needs to look for more sustainable options for residents to maintain the same standard of living. One such option is solar energy. Indeed, the government has already invested in solar energy, newly installing multiple megawatts worth of solar power generators yearly. Private solar power installations in South Korea The amount of solar power for private use in South Korea is likely to rise as more people look toward installing their own solar panels to meet their energy needs. Panels that can be attached to the outside railings of apartments as well as on building rooftops are available for private installation. The government has encouraged these efforts through subsidies.

Electricity generation Hungary’s energy sector is mostly reliant on nuclear electricity generation, coal, and natural gas, as well as importing electricity from neighboring countries, such as Austria, Ukraine, and Slovakia. The total amount of electricity generated in Hungary in 2020 reached **** terawatt hours, marking a slight increase compared to the previous five years. Nuclear energy The Paks Nuclear Power Plant, Hungary’s only nuclear power station, started operating in 1982 and has played a crucial role in the country’s energy supply ever since. The power plant has four nuclear reactors that generate approximately half of the country’s electricity. With the support of the Hungarian government, a contract has been signed for expanding the power plant with two further nuclear reactors. However, according to the findings of a survey conducted in 2020, over half of the country’s population was against the expansion.
During the financial year 2023, the average cost of state electricity supplied in India was 7.11 Indian rupees per kilowatt-hour. Furthermore, that same year, the South Asian country was the third largest electricity producer in the world. Short-term transactions on the rise The electricity market in India has seen significant growth in short-term transactions and power exchange activity. During the fiscal year 2023, the volume of short-term electricity transactions exceeded 194 terawatt-hours, which marked a four percent increase from the previous year. During the same time, electricity transacted through power exchanges was approximately 103 terawatt-hours, the highest number ever recorded. These trends indicate a more dynamic and flexible electricity market across the country. Shift towards renewable energy In the fiscal year 2023, over 8.25 million Renewable Energy Certificates were traded on power exchanges, highlighting the country's commitment to sustainable energy sources. Moreover, India transitioned from being a net importer of electricity to a net exporter of electricity in 2023, exporting around 11 terawatt-hours. The shift shows the success of policies aimed at enhancing India's energy self-reliance and its potential as a regional power supplier.
