The NYC Department of City Planning’s (DCP) Housing Database contains all NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) approved housing construction and demolition jobs filed or completed in NYC since January 1, 2010. It includes the three primary construction job types that add or remove residential units: new buildings, major alterations, and demolitions, and can be used to determine the change in legal housing units across time and space. Records in the Housing Database Project-Level Files are geocoded to the greatest level of precision possible, subject to numerous quality assurance and control checks, recoded for usability, and joined to other housing data sources relevant to city planners and analysts. These tables are aggregated from the DCP Housing Database Project-Level Files, which is derived from Department of Buildings (DOB) approved housing construction and demolition jobs filed or completed in NYC since January 1, 2010. Net housing unit change is calculated as the sum of all three construction job types that add or remove residential units: new buildings, major alterations, and demolitions. These files can be used to determine the change in legal housing units across time and space.

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development had outlays of about 55.19 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. By 2029, the outlays of the Department of Housing and Urban Development are expected to increase to about 76.6 billion U.S. dollars.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) periodically receives "custom tabulations" of Census data from the U.S. Census Bureau that are largely not available through standard Census products. These datasets, known as "CHAS" (Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy) data, demonstrate the extent of housing problems and housing needs, particularly for low income households. The primary purpose of CHAS data is to demonstrate the number of households in need of housing assistance. This is estimated by the number of households that have certain housing problems and have income low enough to qualify for HUD’s programs (primarily 30, 50, and 80 percent of median income). CHAS data provides counts of the numbers of households that fit these HUD-specified characteristics in a variety of geographic areas. In addition to estimating low-income housing needs, CHAS data contributes to a more comprehensive market analysis by documenting issues like lead paint risks, "affordability mismatch," and the interaction of affordability with variables like age of homes, number of bedrooms, and type of building.This dataset is a special tabulation of the 2016-2020 American Community Survey (ACS) and reflects conditions over that time period. The dataset uses custom HUD Area Median Family Income (HAMFI) figures calculated by HUD PDR staff based on 2016-2020 ACS income data. CHAS datasets are used by Federal, State, and Local governments to plan how to spend, and distribute HUD program funds. Total housing starts are reported by local authority and private building control organisations after the end of each quarter. A start is counted from the point at which foundation work begins. The figures are seasonally adjusted to allow comparisons with previous quarters.

Increasing the supply of housing is a key part of DCLG policy. The house building figures are the most frequent and timely indicator of housing delivery.

Robustness and data limitations

The P2 figures from local authorities and figures from private building control companies include imputation for a small number of missing returns.

Seasonal factors for the house building time series are re-calculated annually back to 2000. This is usually done in the second quarter of the calendar year. Therefore the seasonally adjusted house building figures throughout the whole period change slightly at that time but are not marked as 'revised'.

State Government Buildings in the United States This dataset is comprised of buildings or properties that are owned or leased by state level governments. It includes buildings occupied by the headquarters of cabinet level state government executive departments, legislative office buildings outside of the capitol building, offices and court rooms associated with the highest level of the judicial branch of the state government, and large multi-agency state office buildings. Because the research to create this dataset was primarily keyed off of the headquarters of cabinet level state government agencies, some state office buildings that don't house a headquarters for such an agency may have been excluded. Intentionally excluded from this dataset are government run institutions (e.g., schools, colleges, prisons, and libraries). Also excluded are state capitol buildings, as these entities are represented in other HSIP layers. State owned or leased buildings whose primary purpose is not to house state offices have also been intentionally excluded from this dataset. Examples of these include "Salt Domes", "Park Shelters", and "Highway Garages". All entities that have been verified to have no building name have had their [NAME] value set to "NO NAME". If the record in the original source data had no building name and TGS was unable to verify the building name, the [NAME] value was set to "UNKNOWN". All phone numbers in this dataset have been verified by TGS to be the main phone for the building. If the building was verified not to have a main phone number, the [TELEPHONE] field has been left blank. At the request of NGA, text fields in this dataset have been set to all upper case to facilitate consistent database engine search results. At the request of NGA, all diacritics (e.g., the German umlaut or the Spanish tilde) have been replaced with their closest equivalent English character to facilitate use with database systems that may not support diacritics. The currentness of this dataset is indicated by the [CONTDATE] field. Based upon this field, the oldest record dates from 11/27/2007 and the newest record dates from 05/28/2008.
