This publication also includes separate tables showing outcomes for EU and overseas students. Additional experimental statistics are included on UK domiciled students who moved overseas after graduation.

In the academic year of 2022, it is expected that 551,460 female and 331,530 male students will earn a Master’s degree in the United States. These figures are a significant increase from the academic year of 1950, when 16,980 female students and 41,220 male students earned a Master’s degree.
What is a Master’s degree?
A Master’s degree is an academic degree granted by universities after finishing a Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degrees focus in on a specific field and are more specialized than a Bachelor’s. A typical Master’s program is about two years long, with the final semester focusing on the thesis. Master’s degree programs are usually harder to get into than Bachelor’s degree programs, due to the rigor of the program. Because these programs are so competitive, those with a Master’s degree are typically paid more than those with a Bachelor’s degree.

The joint UNESCO-OECD-Eurostat (UOE) data collection on formal education systems provides annual data on student participation and completion of educational programmes as well as data on personnel, cost and type of resources devoted to education. The reference period for non-monetary education data is the school year and for monetary data it is the calendar year. The International Statistics of Education and Training Systems ÔÇô UNESCO-UIS/OECD/Eurostat (UOE) Questionnaire aims to provide the data required by international bodies, in addition to offering results at the national level. It is a synthesis and analysis operation that appears in the National Statistical Plan 2021-2024 (Prog. 8677) and is carried out by the S.G. of Statistics and Studies of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training in collaboration with the Ministry of Universities and the National Institute of Statistics. Its purpose is to integrate the statistical information of the activity of the educational-training system in its different levels of education in order to meet the demands of international statistics, of the same name, requested by Eurostat, OECD and UNESCO-UIS. EDFacts Graduates and Dropouts, 2017-18 (EDFacts GD:2017-18) is one of 17 “topics" identified in the EDFacts documentation (in this database, each “topic" is entered as a separate study). EDFacts GD:2017-18 (ed.gov/about/inits/ed/edfacts) annually collects cross-sectional data from states about student who graduate or receive a certificate of completion from secondary education or students who dropped out of secondary education at the school, LEA, and state levels. EDFacts GD:2017-18 data were collected using the EDFacts Submission System (ESS), a centralized portal and their submission by states is mandatory and required for benefits. Not submitting the required reports by a state constitutes a failure to comply with law and may have consequences for federal funding to the state. Key statistics produced from EDFacts GD:2017-18 are from 6 data groups with information on Regulatory Cohort Graduation Rate (Four, Five, and Six Year)-Graduation Rate; Regulatory Cohort Graduation Rate (Four, Five, and Six Year)-Student Counts; Graduation Rate; Graduates/Completers; Regulatory Cohort Graduation Rate-Flex; and Regulatory Cohort Graduation Rate Student Counts-Flex. For the purposes of this system, data groups are referred to as variables, as a result of the structure and format of EDFacts' data.
