    The financial indicators are based on data compiled according to the 2008 SNA "System of National Accounts, 2008". Many indicators are expressed as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or as a percentage of Gross Disposable Income (GDI) when referring to the Households and NPISHs sector. The definition of GDP and GDI are the following:

    Gross Domestic Product:
    Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is derived from the concept of value added. Gross value added is the difference of output and intermediate consumption. GDP is the sum of gross value added of all resident producer units plus that part (possibly the total) of taxes on products, less subsidies on products, that is not included in the valuation of output [System of National Accounts, 2008, par. 2.138]. GDP is also equal to the sum of final uses of goods and services (all uses except intermediate consumption) measured at purchasers’ prices, less the value of imports of goods and services [System of National Accounts, 2008, par. 2.139]. GDP is also equal to the sum of primary incomes distributed by producer units [System of National Accounts, 2008, par. 2.140].

    Gross Disposable Income:
    Gross Disposable Income (GDI) is equal to net disposable income which is the balancing item of the secondary distribution income account plus the consumption of fixed capital. The use of the Gross Disposable Income (GDI), rather than net disposable income, is preferable for analytical purposes because there are uncertainty and comparability problems with the calculation of consumption of fixed capital. GDI measures the income available to the total economy for final consumption and gross saving [System of National Accounts, 2008, par. 2.145].

    Definition of Debt:
    Debt is a commonly used concept, defined as a specific subset of liabilities identified according to the types of financial instruments included or excluded. Generally, debt is defined as all liabilities that require payment or payments of interest or principal by the debtor to the creditor at a date or dates in the future. Consequently, all debt instruments are liabilities, but some liabilities such as shares, equity and financial derivatives are not debt [System of National Accounts, 2008, par. 22.104]. According to the SNA, most debt instruments are valued at market prices. However, some countries do not apply this valuation, in particular for securities other than shares, except financial derivatives (AF33). In this dataset, for financial indicators referring to debt, the concept of debt is the one adopted by the SNA 2008 as well as by the International Monetary Fund in “Public Sector Debt Statistics – Guide for compilers and users” (Pre-publication draft, May 2011). Debt is thus obtained as the sum of the following liability categories, whenever available / applicable in the financial balance sheet of the institutional sector:special drawing rights (AF12), currency and deposits (AF2), debt securities (AF3), loans (AF4), insurance, pension, and standardised guarantees (AF6), and other accounts payable (AF8). This definition differs from the definition of debt applied under the Maastricht Treaty for European countries. First, gross debt according to the Maastricht definition excludes not only financial derivatives and employee stock options (AF7) and equity and investment fund shares (AF5) but also insurance pensions and standardised guarantees (AF6) and other accounts payable (AF8). Second, debt according to Maastricht definition is valued at nominal prices and not at market prices.

    Abstract

    Survey based Harmonized Indicators (SHIP) files are harmonized data files from household surveys that are conducted by countries in Africa. To ensure the quality and transparency of the data, it is critical to document the procedures of compiling consumption aggregation and other indicators so that the results can be duplicated with ease. This process enables consistency and continuity that make temporal and cross-country comparisons consistent and more reliable.

    Four harmonized data files are prepared for each survey to generate a set of harmonized variables that have the same variable names. Invariably, in each survey, questions are asked in a slightly different way, which poses challenges on consistent definition of harmonized variables. The harmonized household survey data present the best available variables with harmonized definitions, but not identical variables. The four harmonized data files are

    a) Individual level file (Labor force indicators in a separate file): This file has information on basic characteristics of individuals such as age and sex, literacy, education, health, anthropometry and child survival. b) Labor force file: This file has information on labor force including employment/unemployment, earnings, sectors of employment, etc. c) Household level file: This file has information on household expenditure, household head characteristics (age and sex, level of education, employment), housing amenities, assets, and access to infrastructure and services. d) Household Expenditure file: This file has consumption/expenditure aggregates by consumption groups according to Purpose (COICOP) of Household Consumption of the UN.

    Sampling procedure

    Sample Frame The list of households obtained from the 2001/2 Ethiopian Agricultural Sample Enumeration (EASE) was used as a frame to select EAs from the rural part of the country. On the other hand, the list consisting of households by EA, which was obtained from the 2004 Ethiopian Urban Economic Establishment Census, (EUEEC), was used as a frame in order to select sample enumeration areas for the urban HICE survey. A fresh list of households from each urban and rural EA was prepared at the beginning of the survey period. This list was, thus, used as a frame in order to select households from sample EAs.

    Sample Design For the purpose of the survey the country was divided into three broad categories. That is; rural, major urban center and other urban center categories.

    Category I: Rural: - This category consists of the rural areas of eight regional states and two administrative councils (Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa) of the country, except Gambella region. Each region was considered to be a domain (Reporting Level) for which major findings of the survey are reported. This category comprises 10 reporting levels. A stratified two-stage cluster sample design was used to select samples in which the primary sampling units (PSUs) were EAs. Twelve households per sample EA were selected as a Second Stage Sampling Unit (SSU) to which the survey questionnaire were administered.

    Category II:- Major urban centers:- In this category all regional capitals (except Gambella region) and four additional urban centers having higher population sizes as compared to other urban centers were included. Each urban center in this category was considered as a reporting level. However, each sub-city of Addis Ababa was considered to be a domain (reporting levels). Since there is a high variation in the standards of living of the residents of these urban centers (that may have a significant impact on the final results of the survey), each urban center was further stratified into the following three sub-strata. Sub-stratum 1:- Households having a relatively high standards of living Sub-stratum 2:- Households having a relatively medium standards of living and Sub-stratum 3:- Households having a relatively low standards of living. The category has a total of 14 reporting levels. A stratified two-stage cluster sample design was also adopted in this instance. The primary sampling units were EAs of each urban center. Allocation of sample EAs of a reporting level among the above mentioned strata were accomplished in proportion to the number of EAs each stratum consists of. Sixteen households from each sample EA were inally selected as a Secondary Sampling Unit (SSU).

    Category III: - Other urban centers: - Urban centers in the country other than those under category II were grouped into this category. Excluding Gambella region a domain of "other urban centers" is formed for each region. Consequently, 7 reporting levels were formed in this category. Harari, Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa do not have urban centers other than that grouped in category II. Hence, no domain was formed for these regions under this category. Unlike the above two categories a stratified three-stage cluster sample design was adopted to select samples from this category. The primary sampling units were urban centers and the second stage sampling units were EAs. Sixteen households from each EA were lastly selected at the third stage and the survey questionnaires administered for all of them.

    The Derived Current and Annual Net Household Income dataset provides derived net income variables for the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS). It is an unofficial supplement to the set of derived income variables in the official BHPS release (which focus on gross income rather than net income). The purpose of these additional files is to provide an analysis of income and poverty dynamics in Britain, and related topics.

    The aim of the research was to produce a longitudinal complement to the cross-section income distribution information provided by the Department of Social Security's (DSS) Households Below Average Income (HBAI) reports, and to this end the HBAI definition of net income (DSS, 1993) has been closely adhered to. Also included in the data are BHPS versions of HBAI family type and economic status variables.

    It is recommended that these data are used in conjunction with the main BHPS dataset, held at the UKDA under SN 5151.

    The original deposit of this dataset was made in 1999, and contained data from BHPS waves 1-7. Subsequent editions were updated in conjunction with successive waves of BHPS. For the eighth edition (November 2008), new data for Waves 15 and 16 have been added to the study and data for Waves 1–14 and the documentation have been updated. For the ninth edition (April 2012), new data for Waves 17 and 18 have been added and the documentation has been updated accordingly.

Three types of variable are available: estimates of current household net income and annual household net income, and some of their components, together with classifications of persons according to family type and economic status of their family.

    Definition: Output rate: Share of expenditure in net household income. Reported expenditure includes both final consumption expenditure and other expenditure. The largest share of household expenditure is consumer spending. These are in detail the expenses for food, housing, clothing, health, leisure, education, communication, transport as well as accommodation and restaurant services. In addition to final consumption expenditure, households have other expenditure, which is recorded as so-called ‘other expenditure’ or expenditure for non-consumption purposes. These include: - Voluntary contributions to the statutory pension insurance - Insurance contributions (additional health and long-term care insurance, expenditure on motor vehicle, household contents, liability, accident and other insurance) - Other transfers made and expenditure incurred: (e.g. cash gifts and donations, maintenance payments) - Other taxes not elsewhere specified (e.g. motor vehicle, dog, inheritance or gift tax) - Interest on loans (construction loans, etc., consumer loans) - The statistical differences. These arise when, in individual cases, certain small amounts have not been entered in the budget books. Net household income is calculated by deducting income tax/wage tax, church tax and solidarity surcharge as well as compulsory social security contributions from the household gross income (all household income from gainful employment, from assets, from public and non-public transfer payments and from (sub-)letting). In order to form income quintiles, households are sorted by household type according to the level of equivalised income and divided into five groups of equal size. The first qunitil contains the 20 percent of households with the lowest equivalised incomes, the fifth those with the highest equivalised incomes.     This service shows the median household after-tax income in 2015 for Canada, by 2016 census subdivision. The data is from the Census Profile, Statistics Canada Catalogue no. 98-316-X2016001. After-tax income - refers to total income less income taxes of the statistical unit during a specified reference period (for additional information refer to Total Income – 2016 Census Dictionary and After-tax Income – 2016 Census Dictionary). The median income of a specified group is the amount that divides the income distribution of that group into two halves. Census subdivision (CSD) is the general term for municipalities (as determined by provincial/territorial legislation) or areas treated as municipal equivalents for statistical purposes (e.g., Indian reserves, Indian settlements and unorganized territories). Municipal status is defined by laws in effect in each province and territory in Canada. To have a cartographic representation of the ecumene with this socio-economic indicator, it is recommended to add as the first layer, the “NRCan - 2016 population ecumene by census subdivision” web service, accessible in the data resources section below. Besides the variable described here, the dataset contains the id, name, type, province, population, land area and the number of private households for each census subdivision. If a value is null, it could be because it is not available for a specific reference period, it is not applicable, it is too unreliable to be published or it is suppressed to meet confidentiality requirements of the Statistics Act.     Description

    Abstract

    The purpose of the SEPHER data set is to allow for testing, assessing and generating new analysis and metrics that can address inequalities and climate injustice. The data set was created by Tedesco, M., C. Hultquist, S. E. Char, C. Constantinides, T. Galjanic, and A. D. Sinha.

    Methodology

    SEPHER draws upon four major source datasets: CDC Social Vulnerability Index, FEMA National Risk Index, Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, and Evictions datasets. The data from these source datasets have been merged, cleaned, and standardized and all of the variables documented in the data dictionary.

    CDC Social Vulnerability Index

    CDC Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) dataset is a dataset prepared for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the purpose of assessing the degree of social vulnerability of American communities to natural hazards and anthropogenic events. It contains data on 15 social factors taken or derived from Census reports as well as rankings of each tract based on these individual factors, groups of factors corresponding to four related themes (Socioeconomic, Household Composition & Disability, Minority Status & Language, and Housing Type & Transportation) and overall. The data is available for the years 2000, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.

    FEMA National Risk Index

    The National Risk Index (NRI) dataset compiled by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) consists of historic natural disaster data from across the United States at a tract-level. The dataset includes information about 18 natural disasters including earthquakes, tsunamis, wildfires, volcanic activity and many others. Each disaster is detailed out in terms of its frequency, historic impact, potential exposure, expected annual loss and associated risk. The dataset also includes some summary variables for each tract including the total expected loss in terms of building loss, human loss and agricultural loss, the population of the tract, and the area covered by the tract. It finally includes a few more features to characterize the population such as social vulnerability rating and community resilience.

    Home Mortgage Disclosure Act

    The Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) dataset contains loan-level data for home mortgages including information on applications, denials, approvals, and institution purchases. It is managed and expanded annually by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau based on the data collected from financial institutions. The dataset is used by public officials to make decisions and policies, uncover lending patterns and discrimination among mortgage applicants, and investigate if lenders are serving the housing needs of the communities. It covers the period from 2007 to 2017.

    Evictions

    The Evictions dataset is compiled and managed by the Eviction Lab at Princeton University and consists of court records related to eviction cases in the United States between 2000 and 2016. Its purpose is to estimate the prevalence of court-ordered evictions and compare eviction rates among states, counties, cities, and neighborhoods. Besides information on eviction filings and judgments, the dataset includes socioeconomic and real estate data for each tract including race/ethnic origin, household income, poverty rate, property value, median gross rent, rent burden, and others.

    Housing Assessment Resource Tools (HART) This dataset contains 2 tables and 5 files which draw upon data from the 2021 Census of Canada. The tables are a custom order and contain data pertaining to older adults and housing need. The 2 tables have 6 dimensions in common and 1 dimension that is unique to each table. Table 1's unique dimension is the "Ethnicity / Indigeneity status" dimension which contains data fields related to visible minority and Indigenous identity within the population in private households. Table 2's unique dimension is "Structural type of dwelling and Period of Construction" which contains data fields relating to the structural type and period of construction of the dwelling. Each of the two tables is then split into multiple files based on geography. Table 1 has two files: Table 1.1 includes Canada, Provinces and Territories (14 geographies), CDs of NWT (6), CDs of Yukon (1) and CDs of Nunavut (3); and Table 1.2 includes Canada and the CMAs of Canada (44). Table 2 has three files: Table 2.1 includes Canada, Provinces and Territories (14), CDs of NWT (6), CDs of Yukon (1) and CDs of Nunavut (3); Table 2.2 includes Canada and the CMAs of Canada excluding Ontario and Quebec (20 geographies); and Table 2.3 includes Canada and the CMAs of Canada that are in Ontario and Quebec (25 geographies).     A Qualified Census Tract (QCT) is any census tract (or equivalent geographic area defined by the Census Bureau) in which at least 50% of households have an income less than 60% of the Area Median Gross Income (AMGI). HUD has defined 60% of AMGI as 120% of HUD's Very Low Income Limits (VLILs), which are based on 50% of area median family income, adjusted for high cost and low income areas.

    This dataset provides data on Qualified Census Tracts for the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program for 2024. LIHTC Qualified Census Tracts, as defined under the section 42(d)(5)(C) of the of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, include any census tract (or equivalent geographic area defined by the Bureau of the Census) in which at least 50 percent of households have an income less than 60 percent of the Area Median Gross Income (AMGI), or which has a poverty rate of at least 25 percent. Description

The financial indicators are based on data compiled according to the 2008 SNA "System of National Accounts, 2008". Many indicators are expressed as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or as a percentage of Gross Disposable Income (GDI) when referring to the Households and NPISHs sector. The definition of GDP and GDI are the following:

Gross Domestic Product:
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is derived from the concept of value added. Gross value added is the difference of output and intermediate consumption. GDP is the sum of gross value added of all resident producer units plus that part (possibly the total) of taxes on products, less subsidies on products, that is not included in the valuation of output [System of National Accounts, 2008, par. 2.138]. GDP is also equal to the sum of final uses of goods and services (all uses except intermediate consumption) measured at purchasers’ prices, less the value of imports of goods and services [System of National Accounts, 2008, par. 2.139]. GDP is also equal to the sum of primary incomes distributed by producer units [System of National Accounts, 2008, par. 2.140].

Gross Disposable Income:
Gross Disposable Income (GDI) is equal to net disposable income which is the balancing item of the secondary distribution income account plus the consumption of fixed capital. The use of the Gross Disposable Income (GDI), rather than net disposable income, is preferable for analytical purposes because there are uncertainty and comparability problems with the calculation of consumption of fixed capital. GDI measures the income available to the total economy for final consumption and gross saving [System of National Accounts, 2008, par. 2.145].

Definition of Debt:
Debt is a commonly used concept, defined as a specific subset of liabilities identified according to the types of financial instruments included or excluded. Generally, debt is defined as all liabilities that require payment or payments of interest or principal by the debtor to the creditor at a date or dates in the future. Consequently, all debt instruments are liabilities, but some liabilities such as shares, equity and financial derivatives are not debt [System of National Accounts, 2008, par. 22.104]. According to the SNA, most debt instruments are valued at market prices. However, some countries do not apply this valuation, in particular for securities other than shares, except financial derivatives (AF33). In this dataset, for financial indicators referring to debt, the concept of debt is the one adopted by the SNA 2008 as well as by the International Monetary Fund in “Public Sector Debt Statistics – Guide for compilers and users” (Pre-publication draft, May 2011). Debt is thus obtained as the sum of the following liability categories, whenever available / applicable in the financial balance sheet of the institutional sector:special drawing rights (AF12), currency and deposits (AF2), debt securities (AF3), loans (AF4), insurance, pension, and standardised guarantees (AF6), and other accounts payable (AF8). This definition differs from the definition of debt applied under the Maastricht Treaty for European countries. First, gross debt according to the Maastricht definition excludes not only financial derivatives and employee stock options (AF7) and equity and investment fund shares (AF5) but also insurance pensions and standardised guarantees (AF6) and other accounts payable (AF8). Second, debt according to Maastricht definition is valued at nominal prices and not at market prices.
