The market's Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 19.82% from 2019 to 2024 suggests a significant expansion, likely driven by factors such as the rising adoption of online learning platforms, flexible learning options catering to working professionals and geographically dispersed students, and the increasing recognition of online degrees by employers. The market segmentation, encompassing diverse types of online programs (e.g., bachelor's, master's, certificate programs) and applications across various fields (e.g., business, technology, healthcare), contributes to its broad appeal and expansion. Major players like American Public Education, Adtalem Global Education, and others are deploying competitive strategies focused on enhancing the learning experience, improving student support services, and expanding their program offerings to maintain a competitive edge. The geographic distribution indicates strong growth across North America and Asia-Pacific, driven by higher internet penetration and a growing young population seeking educational opportunities. However, challenges remain, including concerns about the perceived quality of online education compared to traditional institutions, the digital divide limiting access for certain demographics, and the need for continuous investment in technology and curriculum development to meet evolving learner needs. Looking ahead to 2033, the online higher education market is projected to maintain significant momentum, further expanding its reach and influence. Continued technological innovation, including advancements in virtual reality and artificial intelligence, will enhance the learning experience and attract a broader range of students. Competitive pressures will likely lead to further innovation in pricing models, program offerings, and marketing strategies, fostering a dynamic and evolving market landscape. E-learning market has seen year-on-year growth since 2015

As of August 2019 - shortly before the Coronavirus pandemic hit Europe, sales of e-learning material was at an all-time high in the UK with 11 percent of respondents surveyed saying they had made purchases under the category in the past year. In 2011 this figure stood at a mere 5 percent. Despite this, most working adults questioned during the same year still said that they preferred to learn with others in a classroom setting, given the choice. Among all responses, online and online group learning (for example via webinars) were the two least popular methods selected.

Learning has been helping young adults cope during lockdown

A survey conducted during the Coronavirus lockdown in 2020 found that after face-to-face calls, watching TV/films and exercising, learning new skills was one of the most vital activities in helping young adults deal with their mental health and wellbeing at home – more helpful than reading or gaming. While nearly half of those using general online learning resources were aged between 16 to 24 years old, the main consumers of e-learning courses were adults aged between 25 and 34. Overall, more men tended to use the internet for learning compared to women.

The online language learning market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 20% during the forecast period. Increasing enrollment of foreign students, drivers.2, and drivers.3 are some of the significant factors fueling online language learning market growth.

    Increasing enrollment of foreign students

Technavio categorizes the online language learning market as a part of the global education services market (also referred to as the global education services market). The parent, global education services market, covers products, services, and solutions that are offered to educational institutions, corporate institutions, students, parents, individuals, and teachers. The global education services market was valued at $ 9,214.61 billion in 2019 and is expected to grow at a moderate pace. Technavio calculates the global education services market size based on the combined revenues generated by manufacturers/providers of equipment, software, teaching materials, solutions, and services. The following factors are expected to drive the growth of the global education services market: The increasing importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education: Increasing job opportunities in the STEM fields is one of the major reasons for the increasing popularity of these courses among students globally. STEM jobs also offer higher salaries compared with non-STEM careers. Various governments are also aiding STEM education through funding and supportive policies. Increasing offerings from ed-tech companies: New generation students facing a competitive education environment are demanding simple but effective solutions. Ed-tech companies are transforming ways of learning by offering technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), interactive whiteboards, blockchain, and STEM Labs. Such technologies are providing hands-on learning and enabling higher retention than textbook learning. Increasing enrollments in online education: Online skills and language learning programs may cost less when compared with offline learning programs. The costs associated with classroom space, equipment, and other physical amenities do not apply to online learning programs. Also, online education offers flexibility in terms of location and study timings, which is particularly suitable for working people who seek additional certification. Increasing enrollment in the K12 segment: This is one of the major factors driving the global education services market. There is a rise in the number of student enrollments in the K-12 segment that includes elementary schools, primary schools, and secondary schools. This growth is more prominent in North America and APAC with countries such as the US, China, and India witnessing high K-12 enrollments. Increasing emphasis on mobile learning: The increasing use of smartphones is encouraging education service providers to introduce mobile learning modules. Description

The online higher education market is experiencing robust growth, fueled by increasing accessibility, affordability demands, and technological advancements. The growing importance of lifelong learning and upskilling will also drive demand for online courses and degree programs. Competitive pressures will likely lead to further innovation in pricing models, program offerings, and marketing strategies, fostering a dynamic and evolving market landscape. To fully capitalize on this growth, educational institutions must prioritize creating engaging and effective online learning environments, addressing concerns around quality and accessibility, and adapting to the ever-changing needs of students in a globally competitive market.
