The General Social Survey (GSS) conducts basic scientific research on the structure and development of American society with a data-collection program designed to both monitor societal change within the United States and to compare the United States to other nations. Begun in 1972, the GSS contains a standard 'core' of demographic, behavioral, and attitudinal questions, plus topics of special interest. Many of the core questions have remained unchanged since 1972 to facilitate time-trend studies as well as replication of earlier findings.

The National Data Program for the Social Sciences (General Social Survey) is both a data diffusion project and a program of social indicator research. Its data collection instrument, the General Social Survey (GSS), was fielded for the 29th time in 2012. Previously an annual survey, the GSS became biennial in 1994. The questionnaire contains a standard core of demographic and attitudinal variables, plus certain topics of special interest selected for rotation (called "topical modules"). Items that appeared on national surveys between 1973 and 1975 are replicated. The exact wording of these questions is retained to facilitate time trend studies as well as replications of earlier findings.

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and the World Bank Development Economics Research Group (DECRG) partnered to implement the survey. The purpose was to find out household's access to and use of available financial services.This was a follow-up to an earlier test of survey designs regarding household access to financial services. The underlying premise is that the identity of a respondent can affect the quality and completeness of the information provided, especially when that respondent is providing information about other household members.
The survey will examine whether questions about specific products (e.g. credit cards, life insurance policies, savings clubs) elicit more complete information than questions asking whether a respondent uses services from a type of provider (e.g. commercial bank, credit union).
To derive the data necessary for these tests, the Financial Service Survey incorporated an experimental design in which one of three versions of the survey instrument (questionnaire) was randomly administered to each household. Individual household members were also randomly selected to respond to some sections of the questionnaire.

The survey covered all adult household members (usual residents) aged 15 years and older.

The most recently visited enumeration areas (EAs) for the Ghana Living Standards Survey Round 5 (GLSS5) were targeted for the survey. This is because the characteristics of these households may not have changed much, and they were more likely to recollect information they had already provided. All the 120 EAs visited in the 10th and 11th cycles of the GLSS5 were included in the survey, with an additional 34 EAs selected from the 60 EAs visited in the 9th cycle. Households within the 154 EAs were listed and 15 selected randomly from each EA yielding a total of 2,310 households.

Three types of questionnaires were used in the survey:
Group 1 Questionnaire - All questions in the three (3) sections were administered to all household members aged 15 years and older. It collected information on background characteristics, the use of financial services and products and actions and attitudes towards accessing and using financial services and products.
Group 2 Questionnaire - Sections 1 and 2 of this questionnaire were administered to all household members aged 15 years and older. Sections 3 and 4 were administered to household members randomly selected using the Kish Grid based on given criteria.
Group 3 Questionnaire - All questions in section (1) were administered to heads of household and one randomly selected household member and covered background characteristics. Section two (2) was administered to heads of household and covered the use of financial services. Sections 3 and 4 were administered to a randomly selected household member and covered the use of financial services and products and actions and attitudes towards access and use of financial services and products.
All the questionnaires were in English and whenever necessary, the interview was conducted in a language of the respondent's choice. An interpreter was also used where the interviewer was not proficient in the respondent's choice of language.
The GSS data editing occurs at three levels:
Out of the 2,310 households selected for the survey, 2,292 were identified and successfully enumerated. This yielded a response rate of 99.2 percent.

This is a series of items, including publications, which were collected for use in a proposed Gas Industry Museum.
A file found amongst the uncatalogued material of the Gas and Fuel Corporation (VPRS 13253 - Unserialised records associated with the Gas and Fuel Archival Collection) indicates that the Tooronga District Centre was proposed as the site for a Gas Industry Museum to contain customer, distribution and production memorabilia. The file indicates that the Special Projects Engineer, N.L. Thomas, first proposed the idea of a gas museum at this location in January 1978.
The file indicates that the District Centres Planning Committee were to ask departmental managers to select suitable items of equipment that were still available within the Corporation to stock the museum.
In February1980 the sites the Corporation was considering for the museum were North Melbourne, St Kilda Road and Tooronga. In a memo from the Property Manager in February 1980, it seems that the Historic Buildings Preservation Council were considering the St Kilda and North Melbourne outstation valve rooms for inclusion on the Register of Historic Buildings. This memo indicates that the Gas and Fuel Corporation did not want these structures included on the Register. The Corporation was planning to offer to preserve the Tooronga building and develop it for the purposes of a museum on the condition that these other buildings were not added to the Register.
Another memo indicates that in February 1980, the Disposals Division and Stores Department were about to commence demolition work at Tooronga, including removal of the old equipment in the valve house. However, some equipment was to be retained to give an authentic atmosphere to the museum and for its historical value
The file indicates that there was no plan to open the museum to the general public, rather it was to be shown only to special guests.
There is no evidence to suggest that a gas museum was ever opened on the site of the Tooronga outstation. Further research is required to establish why this project did not proceed.
It is unknown if the proposed Gas Industry Museum had any relationship to the Gas and Fuel Corporation Archival Collection (VPRS 13141). The only connection identified so far is that both sets of records were housed in a facility in Bendigo and were transferred to the Public Record Office Victoria at the same time. The Gas Industry Museum materials were placed with VPRS 13253 which comprises items that had not been arranged in any way and were either waiting to be accessioned into the Archive or were removed from the Gas and Fuel Corporation's premises when they moved from Flinders Street.
