    Description

Abstract The Doctor’s Office Adjacent to Pharmacies (DAP) model has grown exponentially in Mexico. Its proliferation is due to two factors. The first is the high cost of medical consultations in private hospitals, and the second is that public health services are insufficient. To gauge the importance this model has acquired, it is necessary to analyze the pattern of distribution and operation of this type of doctors’ offices and determine whether they are responding to the unmet demand of a population that is socio-territorially marginalized from health infrastructure. A database was created with updated, geo-referenced information on the precise location of DAP throughout Mexico City and its metropolitan area. Information was obtained on the location, condition and type of franchise, and the infrastructure of each establishment. The analysis found that the distribution pattern of DAP satisfies an unmet need in areas with the highest demand for health services. This situation occurs particularly in areas inhabited by the most marginalized population.

    Description

Palm wine is obtained by fermentation of palm tree sap. In the Pacific coast of Mexico, palm wine is called Tuba and it is consumed as a traditional fermented beverage. Tuba has empirical applications such as an auxiliary in gastrointestinal diseases and a good source of nutrients. In the present study, a next-generation sequencing of the V3–V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene was employed to analyze bacterial diversity and population dynamics during the fermentation process of Tuba, both in laboratory controlled conditions and in commercial samples from local vendors. Taxonomic identification showed that Fructobacillus was the main genus in all the samples, following by Leuconostoc, Gluconacetobacter, Sphingomonas, and Vibrio. Alpha diversity analysis demonstrated variability between all the samples. Beta diversity clustered the bacterial population according to the collection origin of the sample. Metabolic functional profile inference showed that the members of the bacterial communities may present the vitamin, antibiotic and antioxidant biosynthesis genes. Additionally, we further investigated the correlation between the predominant genera and some composition parameters of this beverage. This study provides the basis of the bacterial community composition and functionality of the fermented beverage.

The number of indigenous households stood at 2.9 million in 2020. This figure includes all family units where at least one member or their ancestors declared speaking an indigenous language. Native ethnicities in Mexico generally endure higher and more severe poverty levels. Indigenous people are also in a more vulnerable socio-economic situation. For instance, more than 30 percent of the indigenous population in Mexico lagged in education, almost double the share of non-indigenous population.

Mexico's Afro-descendants Thanks to its millennia-long indigenous ancestry, Mexico is a multiethnic country that amasses one of the richest cultural heritages in the world. During colonial times, millions of slaves from the African continent were brought to Mexican territory. Their contribution to today's Mexican identity is sometimes overlooked. In 2020, around one million households in the country had at least one member who self-perceived as an Afro-descendant, or had ancestors with this ethnicity. Guerrero and Oaxaca are nowadays the states with the largest share of Afro-Mexicans.
