A 2024 survey found that over half of individuals in Great Britain indicated that access to treatment and long waiting times were the biggest problem facing the national healthcare system. Access to treatment and/or long waiting times were also considered to be pressing issues. This statistic reveals the share of individuals who said select problems were the biggest facing the health care system in Great Britain in 2024.

According to a 2023 survey, three-quarters of adults in the UK believed that technology can play a role in supporting health management. Although seven-in-ten thought the collection of personal information is inevitable these days, a similar share believed that anonymity is critical when it comes to health information, regardless of what purpose the companies have.

This publication contains the official statistics about uses of the Mental Health Act(1) ('the Act') in England during 2018-19. Under the Act, people with a mental disorder may be formally detained in hospital (or 'sectioned') in the interests of their own health or safety, or for the protection of other people. They can also be treated in the community but subject to recall to hospital for assessment and/or treatment under a Community Treatment Order (CTO). In 2016-17, the way we source and produce these statistics changed. Previously these statistics were produced from the KP90 aggregate data collection. They are now primarily produced from the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS). The MHSDS provides a much richer data source for these statistics, allowing for new insights into uses of the Act. However, some providers that make use of the Act are not yet submitting data to the MHSDS, or submitting incomplete data. Improvements in data quality have been made over the past year. NHS Digital is working with partners to ensure that all providers are submitting complete data and this publication includes guidance on interpreting these statistics. This statistic depicts the share of individuals willing to provide health data by type in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2015. Of respondents, 59 percent said they would be willing to provide information on their eating habits and diet, but only 49 percent are willing to provide information on their drinking habits.

The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) has published the Public Health Outcomes Framework (PHOF) quarterly data update for May 2022.

The data is presented in an interactive tool that allows users to view it in a user-friendly format. The data tool also provides links to further supporting information, to aid understanding of public health in a local population.

18 indicators have been updated in this release:

• healthy life expectancy and disability-free life expectancy at birth and at 65
• 7 indicators from the health improvement domain including conception rates in teenagers, percentage of looked after children whose emotional wellbeing is a cause for concern, and percentage of physically active adults
• 4 indicators from the health protection domain including the fraction of mortality attributable to particulate air pollution (new method), population vaccination coverage for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage for two doses (females 13 to 14 years old) and population vaccination coverage - Meningococcal ACWY conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) (14 to 15 years)
• 5 indicators from the healthcare and premature mortality domain including emergency readmissions within 30 days of discharge from hospital and preventable sight loss

Our Future Health is a prospective, observational cohort study of the general adult population of the United Kingdom (UK). The programme aims to support a wide range of observational health research. We gather personal, health and lifestyle information from each participant through a self-completed baseline health questionnaire and at an in-person clinic visit. We will further link this data to other health-related data sets. Participants have also given consent for us to recontact them, for example to invite them to take part in further or repeat data collections, or other embedded studies such as clinical trials.

The Our Future Health programme is currently open to all adults (18 years and older) living in the UK. In July 2022, we started recruiting participants in England and will continue to expand across the rest of the UK. The data we’ve gathered so far (March 2025) includes linked NHS England clinical data on 1,151,453 participants

Additional linked datasets are available: - ‘Baseline Health Questionnaire Data’ which contains baseline demographic information and responses to our health questionnaire from 1,414,260 participants. - ‘Genotype Array Data’ which includes genotype array data on 707,522 variants from a subset of 651,050 participants - Clinical Measurements Data which contains clinical data from 1,025,498 participants.

The data is stored in the Our Future Health Trusted Research Environment. We de-identify all participant data we gather before it’s available for use. All researchers will need to become registered researchers at Our Future Health and have an approved research study before they're given access to the data.

We aim to collect a variety of data types from up to 5 million adult participants from across the UK. We hope to make more data types available on a quarterly basis.

This publication provides the most timely statistics available relating to NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England. This information will be of use to people needing access to information quickly for operational decision making and other purposes. These statistics are derived from submissions made using version 3.0 of the Mental Health Services Dataset (MHSDS). This edition includes final statistics for March 2019. NHS Digital review the quality and completeness of the submissions used to create these statistics on an ongoing basis. More information about this work can be found in the Accuracy and reliability section of this report. Fully detailed information on the quality and completeness of particular statistics in this release is not available due to the timescales involved in reviewing submissions and engaging with data providers. Gross value added (GVA) in the human health and social work sector was 189 billion British pounds in 2024, compared with 184 billion pounds in 2023.

The Health Survey for England series was designed to monitor trends in the nation's health; estimating the proportion of people in England who have specified health conditions, and the prevalence of risk factors and behaviours associated with these conditions. The surveys provide regular information that cannot be obtained from other sources. The surveys have been carried out since 1994 by the Joint Health Surveys Unit of NatCen Social Research and the Research Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at UCL. Each survey in the series includes core questions, e.g. about alcohol and smoking, and measurements (such as blood pressure, height and weight, and analysis of blood and saliva samples), and modules of questions on topics that vary from year to year. The trend tables show data for available years between 1993 and 2016 for adults (defined as age 16 and over) and for children. The survey samples cover the population living in private households in England. In 2016 the sample contained 8,011 adults and 2,056 children and 5,049 adults and 1,117 children had a nurse visit. In the United Kingdom (UK), the youth index survey showed that the share of young people who were happy and confident about their emotional well-being has decreased from 2009 to 2024. In 2024, 65 percent of the respondents were confident about their emotional health and 60 percent were happy with their emotional health, compared to 73 and 67 percent who were confident and happy respectively in 2009.

They can also be treated in the community but subject to recall to hospital for assessment and/or treatment under a Community Treatment Order (CTO). People may be detained in secure psychiatric hospitals, other NHS Trusts or at Independent Service Providers (ISPs). All organisations that detain people under the Act must be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). In recent years, the number of detentions under the Act have been rising. An independent review has examined how the Act is used and has made recommendations for improving the Mental Health Act legislation. In responding to the review, the government said it would introduce a new Mental Health Bill to reform practice. This publication does not cover: 1. People in hospital voluntarily for mental health treatment, as they have not been detained under the Act (see the Mental Health Bulletin). 2. Uses of section 136 where the place of safety was a police station; these are published by the Home Office.

Healthcare spending in the United Kingdom (UK) has gradually increased since 2000 when it amounted to 78.5 billion British pounds. By 2021, healthcare expenditure in the UKreached a maximum of over 244 billion British pounds. This was an increase of approximately two billion British pounds on the previous year's healthcare spending. In 2023, this figure stood at almost 230 billion British pounds. Health expenditure in the UK compared to Europe In 2023, the UK spent almost 11 percent of its GDP on healthcare. In comparison to other European countries, this ranked the UK fifth in terms of health expenditure. At the op of the list was Switzerland, which spent 12 percent of its GDP on healthcare that year.  Performance of the NHS in the UK The majority of surveyed individuals in the UK regard the NHS as a world class health service and remain happy with the high level of care provided by the organization. Although waiting times have been getting worse in the A&E department over the years. The NHS has been falling behind the target that 95 percent of patients should be seen within four hours of arrival. As a result, the primary reasons for dissatisfaction with the NHS among the public are the length of time required to get a GP or hospital appointment and the lack of staff.
