This map contains the distribution of hurricane force low pressure centers from 06/2021 through 05/2022 over the North Pacific Ocean. The distribution is plotted as a heat map and indicates the density of hurricane force low centers across the basin during this period. As you zoom in the areas with more hurricane force low pressure centers will appear brighter on the map.The data for the low centers used for the distribution on the map have been taken directly from the Ocean Prediction Center's (OPC's) North Pacific Surface Analyses. The data are also available on the OPC's website in a csv (comma separated value) file along with the associated metadata file. For clarification, an "extratropical" or "post-tropical" low pressure system is classified as "hurricane force" when the winds reach an intensity of 64 knots, or equivalently, 73.6 miles per hour. A system is termed "rapidly intensifying" when the central pressure decreases by at least 24 hectopascals (hPa) or millibars (mb) over a consecutive 24 hour period. In addition, a system is defined as "extratropical" when it is a cold-core non-tropical system. A "post-tropical" system is essentially the same as an extratropical system, but it develops initially as a tropical cyclone before losing its tropical characteristics and transitioning to an extratropical cyclone.
