    Description

'Keyhole (KH) satellite systems- KH-9 acquired photographs of the Earth\'s surface with a telescopic camera system and transported the exposed film through the use of recovery capsules. The capsules or buckets were de-orbited and retrieved by aircraft while the capsules parachuted to earth. The exposed film was developed and the images were analyzed for a range military applications. The Keyhole (KH) satellite system KH-9 (Hexagon) operated between 1971 and 1984. The imagery generated are of historical interest and expected to support current scientific research on climate change and related fields of inquiry. Almost all of the imagery from this camera was declassified in 2012 as a continuation of Executive Order 12951, the same order that declassified CORONA. A subset of this declassified data was transferred to the U.S. Geological Survey\'s Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center. Description

Observing changes in Earth surface topography is crucial for many Earth science disciplines. Documenting these changes over several decades at regional to global scale remains a challenge due to the limited availability of suitable satellite data before the year 2000. Declassified analog satellite images from the American reconnaissance program Hexagon (KH-9), which surveyed nearly all land surfaces from 1972 to 1986 at meter to sub-meter resolutions, provide a unique opportunity to fill the gap in observations. However, large-scale processing of analog imagery remains challenging. We developed an automated workflow to generate Digital Elevation Models and orthophotos from scanned KH-9 mapping camera stereo images. The workflow includes a preprocessing step to correct for film and scanning distortions and crop the scanned images, and a stereo reconstruction step using the open-source NASA Ames Stereo Pipeline. The processing of several hundreds of image pairs enabled us to estimate reliable camera parameters for each KH-9 mission, thereby correcting elevation biases of several tens of meters. The resulting DEMs were validated against various reference elevation data, including snow-covered glaciers with limited image texture. Pixel-scale elevation uncertainty was estimated as 5 m at the 68% confidence level, and less than 15 m at the 95% level. We evaluated the uncertainty of spatially averaged elevation change and volume change, both from an empirical and analytical approach, and we raise particular attention to large-scale correlated biases that may impact volume change estimates from such DEMs. Finally, we present a case study of long-term glacier elevation change in the European Alps. Our results show the suitability of these historical images to quantitatively study global surface change over the past 40–50 years.

Description

Extent boundaries for sets of Hexagon (HxGN) imagery made available through State of California Department of Technology Agreement. Since some services provided by HxGN include multiple sets of imagery, this layer will help users determine where the sets are located geographically. To create this layer, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife subsetted seamline layers provided by Hexagon. This extent layer has no access constraints but per the Agreement, the imagery has the following constraints: "The following entities shall be allowed unlimited access licenses to the imagery provided under this contract: 2.1. All State Government Agencies, Public Entities, and Regents-level institutions including all University of California and California State University institutes. 2.2. All County-level governments. 2.3. All Municipal (city) governments. 2.4. All Public Safety Answering Points. 2.5. Any subcontractor or organization holding an active contract to conduct work on behalf of the entities identified in 2.1 through 2.4 above. 2.6. All federal or state recognized tribal organizations."

Seamline layers with dates for the imagery are available via separate download here.
