    Description

The AIAN Summary File contains data on population characteristics, such as sex, age, average household size, household type, and relationship to householder. The American Indian and Alaska Native Summary File (AIANSF) contains data on population characteristics, such as sex, age, average household size, household type, and relationship to householder. The file also includes housing characteristics, such as tenure (whether a housing unit is owner-occupied or renter- occupied) and age of householder for occupied housing units. Selected aggregates and medians also are provided. A complete listing of subjects in the AIANSF is found in Chapter 3, Subject Locator. The layout of the tables in the AIANSF is similar to that in Summary File 2 (SF 2). These data are presented in 47 population tables (identified with a "PCT") and 14 housing tables (identified with an "HCT") shown down to the census tract level; and 10 population tables (identified with a "PCO") shown down to the county level, for a total of 71 tables. Each table is iterated for the total population, the total American Indian and Alaska Native population alone, the total American Indian and Alaska Native population alone or in combination, and 1,567 detailed tribes and tribal groupings. Tribes or tribal groupings are included on the iterations list if they met a threshold of at least 100 people in the 2010 Census. In addition, the presentation of AIANSF tables for any of the tribes and tribal groupings is subject to a population threshold of 100 or more people in a given geography. That is, if there are fewer than 100 people in a specific population group in a specific geographic area, their population and housing characteristics data are not available for that geographic area in the AIANSF. See Appendix H, Characteristic Iterations, for more information.

    Description

The Great Britain Historical Database has been assembled as part of the ongoing Great Britain Historical GIS Project. The project aims to trace the emergence of the north-south divide in Britain and to provide a synoptic view of the human geography of Britain at sub-county scales. Further information about the project is available on A Vision of Britain webpages, where users can browse the database's documentation system online.

These data were originally collected by the Censuses of Population for England and Wales, and for Scotland. They were computerised by the Great Britain Historical GIS Project and its collaborators.

In 1961, the Census of Population gathered data on housing tenure as well as density and amenities. The data in this study summarise the resulting tabulations, providing counts of numbers of households in each tenure type for all districts in Great Britain; the original tabulations also give counts by numbers of persons, and for some districts include cross-tabulations against numbers of rooms.

How many households are in the U.S.?

In 2023, there were 131.43 million households in the United States. This is a significant increase from 1960, when there were 52.8 million households in the U.S.

    What counts as a household?

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a household is considered to be all persons living within one housing unit. This includes apartments, houses, or single rooms, and consists of both related and unrelated people living together. For example, two roommates who share a living space but are not related would be considered a household in the eyes of the Census. It should be noted that group living quarters, such as college dorms, are not counted as households in the Census.

    Household changes

While the population of the United States has been increasing, the average size of households in the U.S. has decreased since 1960. In 1960, there was an average of 3.33 people per household, but in 2023, this figure had decreased to 2.51 people per household. Additionally, two person households make up the majority of American households, followed closely by single-person households.

Hispanics may be of any race. // For detailed information about the methods used to create the population projections, see https://www.census.gov/population/projections/methodology. // The population projections for the United States are produced by the Census Bureau's Population Estimates and Projections Program. Population projections are estimates of the population for future dates. They are typically based on an estimated population consistent with the most recent decennial census and are produced using the cohort-component method. Projections illustrate possible courses of population change based on assumptions about future births, deaths, net international migration, and domestic migration. The Population Estimates and Projections Program provides additional information on its website: https://www.census.gov/population/projections.

    Description

The data comprising the Puerto Rico Census Project, 1910 contain individual and household records drawn from the 1910 Puerto Rican Population Census. The data include variables containing basic demographic information such as age, sex, race, marital status, number of children born and surviving, family size, place of birth, immigration status, county and neighborhood of residence, urban/rural status, and citizenship. The data also describe language proficiency, literacy, school attendance, and disabilities (blind or deaf) of the individuals. Other variables provide data on occupation, industry, ownership of residence, status of mortgage, and farm ownership. There are four classifications of variables belonging to this dataset: original input variables, coded variables, constructed variables, and quality flag variables. The original input variables contain the raw data collected by the enumerators. The coded variables are variables that were recoded by the University of Wisconsin Survey Center (UWSC) as part of the Puerto Rico Census Project. Constructed variables were produced by UWSC to capture additional relevant information. For example, one constructed variable measures literacy by combining separate variables containing data on whether the individual could read and if they could write. Finally, quality flag variables were created by UWSC to indicate whether it could be logically deduced that individual records had been hand edited by the Census Office.

    Abstract

The main objectives of a census are: - to provide current information on demographic and related socio-economic characteristics of the population at national and sub-national levels. Such information facilitates effective planning and evaluation of development programmes; - to provide and maintain a time series of demographic data at national and sub-national levels. These data enhance appraisal of the past, assessment of the present and estimation of future trends; - to develop the national capabilities to produce, coordinate and disseminate relevant, accurate and timely statistics to meet the information needs of various users; - to improve the capability to advise other users and producers of statistics; and - to develop and maintain an efficient sampling frame for surveys.

    Geographic coverage

The geographical frame for the 2012 Census followed the spatially defined structure of provinces, administrative districts and wards. In an effort to ensure that the whole country was covered during the enumeration period, the whole country was demarcated into small areas known as enumeration areas (EAs). Each one of these EAs was covered by one enumerator. The identified boundaries of the EAs were such that they did not cut across existing provincial, district, or ward boundaries.

There were also special population categories which, by definition, did not belong to any defined area, or for some reason, required special arrangements in order to be enumerated. The special population categories included among others, the homeless, vagrants, persons who were travelling on trains or buses on the census night, persons in camping sites, prisons, hotels and in other unstable population situations.

    Universe

A population census can be taken either on a de facto or de jure basis. The latter involves enumerating people at their place of usual residence. The 2012 census however, was conducted on a de facto basis, relating to the night of the17th of August. This means that all those people who spent the night of the 17th /18th of August in Zimbabwe were counted, irrespective of their citizenship, nationality or residence status. It should be noted that the main objects of the enumeration are i) the individual and ii) the household. A household, as defined for the 2012 Population census, is a person or group of persons who stayed the census night i.e. Friday night of the 17-18th of August, 2012, together in a dwelling unit, whether or not they were related by blood or marriage. he census night were not counted.

    Face-to-face [f2f]

    Research instrument

Census information was collected using a pre-coded questionnaire (see copy in Appendix 1a). The questionnaire was made up of the following sections: A. Identification of enumeration area and household B. Socio-economic and demographic characteristics of household members. Disability was included here. C. School attendance and level of education attained by all household members age 3 years and above. Current attendance for those age 3 - 24 years. D. Labour force characteristics for those age 10 years and above E. Fertility questions for women age 15-49 years F. Living conditions G. Deaths in the household in the past 12 months H. Total number of people in the household by sex

A simplified version of the questionnaire was used for some special population categories, e.g. the vagrants and those in prison.

    How Are We Protecting Privacy?

Results for OnSIS and Statistics Canada variables are suppressed based on school population size to better protect student privacy. In order to achieve this additional level of protection, the Ministry has used a methodology that randomly rounds a percentage either up or down depending on school enrolment. In order to protect privacy, the ministry does not publicly report on data when there are fewer than 10 individuals represented.

      * Percentages depicted as 0 may not always be 0 values as in certain situations the values have been randomly rounded down or there are no reported results at a school for the respective indicator. * Percentages depicted as 100 are not always 100, in certain situations the values have been randomly rounded up.
The school enrolment totals have been rounded to the nearest 5 in order to better protect and maintain student privacy.

The information in the School Information Finder is the most current available to the Ministry of Education at this time, as reported by schools, school boards, EQAO and Statistics Canada. The information is updated as frequently as possible.

This information is also available on the Ministry of Education's School Information Finder website by individual school.

Descriptions for some of the data types can be found in our glossary.

School/school board and school authority contact information are updated and maintained by school boards and may not be the most current version. For the most recent information please visit: https://data.ontario.ca/dataset/ontario-public-school-contact-information.

    Description

Abstract (en): Summary File 4 (SF 4) from the United States 2000 Census contains the sample data, which is the information compiled from the questions asked of a sample of all people and housing units. Population items include basic population totals: urban and rural, households and families, marital status, grandparents as caregivers, language and ability to speak English, ancestry, place of birth, citizenship status, year of entry, migration, place of work, journey to work (commuting), school enrollment and educational attainment, veteran status, disability, employment status, industry, occupation, class of worker, income, and poverty status. Housing items include basic housing totals: urban and rural, number of rooms, number of bedrooms, year moved into unit, household size and occupants per room, units in structure, year structure built, heating fuel, telephone service, plumbing and kitchen facilities, vehicles available, value of home, monthly rent, and shelter costs. In Summary File 4, the sample data are presented in 213 population tables (matrices) and 110 housing tables, identified with "PCT" and "HCT" respectively. Each table is iterated for 336 population groups: the total population, 132 race groups, 78 American Indian and Alaska Native tribe categories (reflecting 39 individual tribes), 39 Hispanic or Latino groups, and 86 ancestry groups. The presentation of SF4 tables for any of the 336 population groups is subject to a population threshold. That is, if there are fewer than 100 people (100-percent count) in a specific population group in a specific geographic area, and there are fewer than 50 unweighted cases, their population and housing characteristics data are not available for that geographic area in SF4. For the ancestry iterations, only the 50 unweighted cases test can be performed. See Appendix H: Characteristic Iterations, for a complete list of characteristic iterations. ICPSR data undergo a confidentiality review and are altered when necessary to limit the risk of disclosure. ICPSR also routinely creates ready-to-go data files along with setups in the major statistical software formats as well as standard codebooks to accompany the data. In addition to these procedures, ICPSR performed the following processing steps for this data collection: Created variable labels and/or value labels.. All persons in housing units in the District of Columbia in 2000. 2013-05-25 Multiple Census data file segments were repackaged for distribution into a single zip archive per dataset. No changes were made to the data or documentation.2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 342 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads.2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 341 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads.2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 340 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads.2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 339 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads.2006-01-12 All files were removed from dataset 338 and flagged as study-level files, so that they will accompany all downloads. Because of the number of files per state in Summary File 4, ICPSR has given each state its own ICPSR study number in the range ICPSR 13512-13563. The study number for the national file is 13570. Data for each state are being released as they become available. The data are provided in 38 segments (files) per iteration. These segments are PCT1-PCT4, PCT5-PCT16, PCT17-PCT34, PCT35-PCT37, PCT38-PCT45, PCT46-PCT49, PCT50-PCT61, PCT62-PCT67, PCT68-PCT71, PCT72-PCT76, PCT77-PCT78, PCT79-PCT81, PCT82-PCT84, PCT85-PCT86 (partial), PCT86 (partial), PCT87-PCT103, PCT104-PCT120, PCT121-PCT131, PCT132-PCT137, PCT138-PCT143, PCT144, PCT145-PCT150, PCT151-PCT156, PCT157-PCT162, PCT163-PCT208, PCT209-PCT213, HCT1-HCT9, HCT10-HCT18, HCT19-HCT22, HCT23-HCT25, HCT26-HCT29, HCT30-HCT39, HCT40-HCT55, HCT56-HCT61, HCT62-HCT70, HCT71-HCT81, HCT82-HCT86, and HCT87-HCT110. The iterations are Parts 1-336, the Geographic Header File is Part 337. The Geographic Header File is in fixed-format ASCII and the table files are in comma-delimited ASCII format. A merged iteration will have 7,963 variables. For Parts 251-336, the part names contain numbers within parentheses that refer to the Ancestry Code List (page G1 of the codebook).
