Women’s safety in India   Despite public and private initiatives to ensure safety measures are being implemented, being a girl or woman is often seen as a disadvantage. From banning prenatal sex determination to encouraging girls to go to school and inclusion in the workforce, attempts are consistently being made to better how women are treated. Despite this, Indians live in a society that has deeply normalized all levels of crime against women, giving the responsibility of safety to the individual rather than the community.

The four Nordic countries Sweden, Iceland, Norway, and Denmark are between the five countries with the highest rate of reported sexual violence in Europe in 2022. More than 200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants were reported in Sweden.Please note that reporting varies from country to country, and the willingness of victims to come forward can vary across regions and cultures, therefore a comparison between the countries should be taken with caution.

Even though many rapes are not reported in the country, it is an issue that continuously makes news headlines, some leading to public protests. Indian women are constantly in a state of high alert when alone on the streets, at work or in the markets. Due to India’s predominantly patriarchal nature, domestic violence is known to be culturally acceptable. Studies reveal that even a majority of working women suffer domestic abuse from their husbands. A non-earning woman’s position further exacerbates vulnerability and dependence on their male partner as opposed to a woman who contributors financially to the household. Rampant poverty across the country is the main driver for low literacy rates and consequently, disempowerment and abuse among women.

A rapist being a stranger lurking in the shadows is less likely than people may like to think. Sexual assault, in any form, has been a long simmering problem in the U.S.; one which has only recently begun to be addressed in the public spotlight. The #metoo movement began to go viral in October 2017 in response to sexual assault allegations against movie producer Harvey Weinstein. The movement aims to show just how widespread sexual assault is, and over half of Americans support the movement.

In 2022, the number of reported rapes in Argentina was over 7,063 cases, the highest figure during the study period. During a recent survey, crime ranked as the third main problem of Argentina according to public opinion, only surpassed by inflation and corruption.

As of 2023, the African country with the highest rate of sexual violnce was Botswana. It had 131.7 cases out of 100,000 inhabitants. The second highest rate was South Africa. It is important to note that these statistics relfect reported crime however, not all crime is reported.

In 2023, São Paulo was the state with the highest number of reported rape cases in Brazil, with ****** occurrences. Paraná ranked second with ***** cases. Overall, that year, there were almost ****** reported rape cases in Brazil.

Coimbatore in the state of Tamil Nadu had the lowest number of rape victims in India in 2022 among major cities, with ***** reported cases. Whereas, Delhi had the highest number of reported rape cases, with over ************ victims.

The Federal Police (Bundespolizei), works in railway stations, at airports, and seaports. They also protect borders, government buildings, and deal with organized crime and terrorism. The criminal police (Kriminalpolizei, Kripo), the only policemen not wearing in uniform in Germany, handle assault, murder, and rape cases, as well as theft. The uniformed police (Schutzpolizei, SchuPo), or beat police, are regularly visible in streets, as they are responsible for traffic safety, among other tasks, and may be approached directly by people in need of assistance or help.

The number of recorded rapes in Japan increased to approximately ***** cases in 2024 from the previous year. The number of reported non-consensual indecencies also increased to nearly ***** cases. In 2023, amendments to the Penal Code expanded the definition of rape, which up to that point was interpreted as forced intercourse, including forced anal and oral sex, to non-consensual intercourse.

In FY 2022/2023, the township of Inanda in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa had the highest number of recorded rape incidents, with 321 reports. This accounts for almost four percent of all rape cases reported in the province during the observed period. The town of Thohoyandou followed, contributing around seven percent to the overall rape reports in the Limpopo province, with 265 cases.
