    Description

In this 2018 survey, eight percent of respondents stated they think the biggest problem for the United States today is Donald Trump. In fact, most of the important problems mentioned are somehow related to the current POTUS – the most mentioned one being immigration and racism.

    A country divided

Since Trump’s inauguration in January 2017, political camps in the United States are deeply divided and global politics is in turmoil; Trump’s job approval ratings are notoriously low, and in fact, they are lower than Reagan’s or Nixon’s averages ever were. Trump’s leadership is controversial at best and his executive orders often cause protests, especially among Democrats and liberals – like the travel ban for Muslims.

    On the other side

One of Trump’s main campaign promises was a wall on the border with Mexico in order to keep potential illegal immigrants out and enhance security for American citizens. When he did not get the majority for this plan, he declared a national emergency to force the budget to be allocated, even though the majority of Americans did not support this idea, and it is unclear if the situation at the Mexican border actually warrants it. In fact, the total number of unauthorized immigrants has decreased over the last few years and today, many Americans believe that their country benefits from immigrants and their work .

    Description

Objective. Some mothers with a tendency to experience stress may have been predisposed to parental burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic in response to the double jeopardy of high burden and low social support. By taking into account parental functioning before the pandemic, the extent of this double jeopardy may be gauged. Design. This longitudinal Dutch cohort study (N = 1,787) estimated the predictive role of stable maternal stress and the availability of social support during the pandemic for symptoms of parental burnout during the pandemic. Maternal stress was measured at 3 months, 12 months, 2 years, and 4 years after birth, and social support and parental burnout were assessed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when the children were 8–11 years old. The Trait-State-Occasion model was used to operationalize the underlying stable component of maternal stress from 3 months to 4 years after the birth of the first child, which enabled us to leverage longitudinal data to deliver a best estimate of the parents’ conditions (i.e. how much stress they experienced) before the crisis. Results. Maternal stress was explained on average for 69% by stable and 31% by occasion-specific components. During the pandemic, stable maternal stress was associated with parental burnout, and higher social support was related to lower symptoms of parental burnout (even after controlling for stable maternal stress). Conclusions. Maternal stress should be considered as a continuous vulnerability factor in the face of heightened burden and low resources. Furthermore, mothers who experience little or no social support may be at increased risk for thoughts and feelings related to parental burnout when faced with a crisis.

    Description

Individuals can act to mitigate climate change and its consequences by changing their own behavior, working with others to address community issues, or advocating for government action. However, little is known about what people are doing or the factors shaping their engagement. We surveyed 741 respondents in the United States to understand their current beliefs, motivations, and behaviors related to climate action. Our respondents report frequently taking everyday actions, such as talking to others about climate change and buying climate friendly products with less frequent, but still higher than expected, advocacy-oriented actions like signing petitions or contacting representatives. We find wide agreement on the importance of government action and the need for government to hear people’s concerns, with more variability in the importance assigned to community and individual actions. Lack of access to resources, social support, or fun approaches to addressing climate change represent obstacles to further action.

    Description

What is Social Vulnerability?Every community must prepare for and respond to hazardous events, whether a natural disaster like a tornado or a disease outbreak, or an anthropogenic event such as a harmful chemical spill. The degree to which a community exhibits certain social conditions, including high poverty, low percentage of vehicle access, or crowded households, among others, may affect that community’s ability to prevent human suffering and financial loss in the event of a disaster. These factors describe a community’s social vulnerability. What is the CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerability Index?ATSDR’s Geospatial Research, Analysis, & Services Program (GRASP) created the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry Social Vulnerability Index (hereafter, CDC/ATSDR SVI or SVI) to help public health officials and emergency response planners identify and map the communities that will most likely need support before, during, and after a hazardous event.SVI indicates the relative vulnerability of every U.S. census tract. Census tracts are subdivisions of counties for which the Census collects statistical data. SVI ranks the tracts on 16 social factors, such as unemployment, racial and ethnic minority status, and disability status. Then, SVI further groups the factors into four related themes. Thus, each tract receives a ranking for each Census variable and for each of the four themes as well as an overall ranking.Below, text that describes “tract” methods also refers to county methods. How can the SVI help communities be better prepared for hazardous events?SVI provides specific socially and spatially relevant information to help public health officials and local planners better prepare communities to respond to emergency events such as severe weather, floods, disease outbreaks, or chemical exposure.SVI can be used to:Assess community need during emergency preparedness planning.Estimate the type and quantity of needed supplies such as food, water, medicine, and bedding.Decide the number of emergency personnel required to assist people.Identify areas in need of emergency shelters.Create a plan to evacuate people, accounting for those who have special needs, such as those without vehicles, the elderly, or people who do not speak English well.Identify communities that will need continued support to recover following an emergency or natural disaster. For more detailed methodology and attribute details, please review this document.

    Description

Lackluster demand for primary, secondary and postsecondary educational services has pushed many institutions to seek services that enhance their value propositions, like counseling, professional development and education consulting. At the same time, higher government funding for education in the current period has expanded clients' budgets, enabling them to invest more in testing and educational support services. Concerns surrounding the price of a college education have especially bolstered support services as universities look for ways to improve their graduates' job prospects. Still, the removal or suspension of standardized testing requirements in the college admissions process has strained revenue for testing services. Revenue has been surging at a CAGR of 7.8% to an estimated $32.5 billion over the past five years, including expected growth of 2.0% in 2025 alone. Birth rates in the US have steadily dropped, leading to shrinking enrollment in primary and secondary schools and educators struggling to replace graduating students. Testing and educational support services have accordingly faced a shrinking market, but solid spending power downstream and significant investments in student retention programs have buoyed revenue. Staggering student debt figures are discouraging many graduates from pursuing higher education, but lower-cost alternatives like community colleges have prevented these concerns from significantly impacting testing and educational support services. However, skepticism surrounding higher education overall has spurred demand for education consultants from potential students seeking to navigate the evolving enrollment environment. These long-term shifts present a challenge to providers, but testing and educational support services have demonstrated resiliency and continued to generate revenue growth. Testing centers are expected to face more pressure through the next period. Suspended testing requirements for university admissions will continue to be the norm, but some schools may reinstitute their requirements. Price competition will intensify as more educational support service providers enter the market, dampening revenue and profit. The continued proliferation of online courses will uplift providers capable of delivering flexible services and sustain profit, though growing workforces will strain it. The Trump administration's efforts to expand school choice programs will make private schools a more lucrative market for testing and educational support services. Still, rising income levels and strong state and local government support will fuel college enrollment and drive revenue growth. Testing and educational support services revenue is set to mount at a CAGR of 1.1% to an estimated $34.3 billion over the five years through 2030.

Recent research finds that variation in direct democracy support is partially explained by whether this institution helps advance policy interests. We test this relationship in the United States, whose status as the world’s most frequent practitioner of direct democracy and unique nature of citizen-legislating experiences allows us to contribute to this literature. Using a survey of thirteen initiative states that includes questions about every measure on the respondent’s ballot, we find that having proposition contests decided as desired, especially for the measure perceived as the most important, is associated with higher support. Those who want a larger percentage of measures to pass are similarly more supportive. We also demonstrate that out-of-power partisans are more favorable toward direct democracy, a finding we replicate for Republicans in a nationwide survey (though this relationship is limited to those aware (or likely aware) of legislative control). We discuss these findings’ implications in the conclusion.

The New York Times is releasing a series of data files with cumulative counts of coronavirus cases in the United States, at the state and county level, over time. We are compiling this time series data from state and local governments and health departments in an attempt to provide a complete record of the ongoing outbreak.

Since late January, The Times has tracked cases of coronavirus in real time as they were identified after testing. Because of the widespread shortage of testing, however, the data is necessarily limited in the picture it presents of the outbreak.

We have used this data to power our maps and reporting tracking the outbreak, and it is now being made available to the public in response to requests from researchers, scientists and government officials who would like access to the data to better understand the outbreak.

The data begins with the first reported coronavirus case in Washington State on Jan. 21, 2020. We will publish regular updates to the data in this repository.

    Description

The global motorcycle top box support market is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing motorcycle ownership, particularly in emerging economies, and a rising preference for enhanced luggage carrying capacity and convenience. The market is segmented by application (motorcycle, electric bike, other) and type (steel, aluminum, other). Steel currently dominates due to its cost-effectiveness and durability, but aluminum is gaining traction due to its lightweight nature and improved aesthetics, particularly in the premium segment. The electric bike segment is witnessing significant growth, fueled by environmental concerns and government incentives promoting sustainable transportation. Key players like KAPPA, Givi, SHAD, and Oxford Products are driving innovation through the introduction of technologically advanced top box support systems featuring improved mounting mechanisms, enhanced security features, and aerodynamic designs. Regional variations exist, with North America and Europe currently holding a larger market share, but Asia-Pacific is projected to experience the highest growth rate due to rapid economic development and burgeoning middle classes. However, challenges include the fluctuating prices of raw materials (steel and aluminum) and increasing competition, particularly from smaller manufacturers offering cost-competitive alternatives. The market's future trajectory is optimistic, anticipating continued growth driven by the factors mentioned above, as well as the expansion of e-commerce and related delivery services which increase the need for reliable and secure luggage solutions. The forecast period of 2025-2033 anticipates a sustained CAGR (let's assume a conservative estimate of 7% based on industry trends). This growth will be fueled by the expansion of the electric bike segment and the ongoing innovation within the industry. While steel will likely maintain its dominant position in terms of volume, aluminum and other materials will steadily capture market share, driven by premiumization and a focus on lighter weight solutions for improved fuel efficiency. The competitive landscape is expected to remain dynamic with both established players and new entrants vying for market share. Geographical expansion into emerging markets will be crucial for sustained growth, along with successful product differentiation strategies focused on safety, aesthetics, and user experience. Effective marketing and distribution strategies targeting motorcycle enthusiasts and riders will also play a significant role in market penetration.

    Description

Courts are particularly reliant on the goodwill of those they govern as a source of political power, yet existing scholarship provides limited insight into what the public expects of its judges while in office. We investigate the American public’s attitudes over an integral component of judicial behavior: the legal principles judges employ when making decisions. Our theoretical perspective argues that political preferences shape individuals’ attitudes over how judges apply legal principles, mirroring ideological divisions expressed by prominent political elites and judges. Using an original battery of questions, we find high support across all Americans for the use of certain, well-established legal principles, but stark differences in how liberals and conservatives evaluate the use of more controversial principles. In a survey experiment, we find that agreement [disagreement] between an individual’s attitudes over the use of legal principles and the reasoning contained in a Supreme Court opinion is associated with increased [decreased] support for the Court decision. Our findings reveal strategic incentives for judges to employ specific legal principles when making their decisions and highlight the intimate connection between law and politics in the eyes of the American public.
