Hard red winter wheat is mainly grown in the Great Plains area ranging from Montana to Texas. This type is primarily used for the production of bread flour. Hard red spring wheat is mostly cultivated in the Northern Plains area. Their wheat ears are mainly taken for protein blending purposes. Durum wheat, which is primarily grown in North Dakota and Montana, is known for their excellent qualities for producing pasta. The wheat class everyone knows from their breakfast cereal is named white wheat. Almost every U.S. state is involved in agricultural wheat production. The latest statistics show that North Dakota, Kansas and Montana were the leading wheat producing states among the United States.
As of 2024, Arizona was the top U.S. state when it came to the yield of wheat per harvested acre, at 109 bushels. This is over ten more bushels per acre than the second and third leading states, Indiana and Delaware. Wheat cultivation and production in the U.S. Although Arizona led the yield per harvested acre in 2023, the state did not have a great deal of planted nor harvested area of wheat that year. Kansas and North Dakota were the top two states in both categories. That year, Kansas planted about 8.1 million acres of wheat and harvested 5.8 million acres of it. Overall, about 1.81 million bushels of wheat were produced that year in the United States. Uses of wheat Wheat can be utilized for food, feed, fuel, or other purposes. Other grains, like maize, are used far more for feed than for food. In the United States, wheat is primarily used for food, but is also used as seed and as animal feed. In 2022, almost 90 percent of the wheat produced domestically was used for food. That year only about 90 million bushels were used for animal feed.

This dataset provides county-level data for Nitrogen fertilizer applied to county croplands [1000 kg N/yr]. This includes only those crops used in an assessment of greenhouse gas production from US agriculture using the DNDC agro-ecosystem model [see, for example, Li et al. (1992), J. Geophys. Res., 97:9759-9776; Li et al. (1996) Global Biogeochem. Cycles, 10:297-306]. Cropland area statistics are from the National Agricultural Statistical Service (NASS) for 1990 for most crops, though some are 1992 data from the Census of Agriculture. Data represent total of irrigated and non-irrigated areas. (see NASS Crops County Data).
This is based on 'typical' nitrogen fertilization rates for each of the crops. The fertilizer application rates (see Table below) were derived from USDA NASS state agricultural statistics bulletins.

County crop areas were multiplied by the nitrogen fertilization rates given above to determine total N-fertilization of these croplands per year. The 1990 national total N fertilizer use calculated by this method (8.5 million tonnes N/yr) is 83% of the 1990 national N-fertilizer sales (10.3 million tonnes N/yr). The sales total is expected to be larger because it will include fertilizer sold for other uses (eg. lawns, golf courses, other non-crop uses) as well as farm-use fertilizer applied to crops not included in the crop database (eg. vineyards, orchards, sod). EOS-WEBSTER provides seven datasets which provide county-level data on agricultural management, crop production, livestock, soil properties, geography and population. These datasets were assembled during the mid-1990's to provide driving variables for an assessment of greenhouse gas production from US agriculture using the DNDC agro-ecosystem model [see, for example, Li et al. (1992), J. Geophys. Res., 97:9759-9776; Li et al. (1996) Global Biogeochem. Cycles, 10:297-306]. The data (except nitrogen fertilizer use) were all derived from publicly available, national databases. Each dataset has a separate DIF.

This data set contains a single data file (.csv format) that provides gridded values of net primary productivity (NPP) for cropland in eight counties in the central United States for the year 1992 and estimates of interannual cropland NPP in Iowa for years from 1982 through 1996. The data file also includes climate, soil texture, and land cover data for each 0.5 degree grid cell.
The magnitude and interannual variation in NPP was estimated using crop area and yield data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). The major harvested commodities were corn, soybean, sorghum, sunflower, oats, barley, wheat, and hay. Total NPP estimates include both above- and below-ground components.
County-level NPP in 1992 ranged from 195 to 760 gC/m2/year. The area of highest NPP, ranging from 650 to 760 gC/m2/year, was found in a band extending across Iowa, through northern Illinois, Indiana, and southwestern Ohio. Areas of moderate NPP, from 550 to 650 gC/m2/year, occurred mostly in Michigan and Wisconsin, while large areas of low NPP, from 200 to 550 gC/m2/year, occurred in North Dakota, southern Illinois, and Minnesota. The area of highest production was also the area with the largest proportion of land sown with corn and soybean. NPP for counties in Iowa varied among years (1982-1996) by a factor of 2, with the lowest NPP in 1983 (which had an unusually wet spring), in 1988 (which was a drought year), and in 1993 (which experienced floods).

Cotton production
Cotton is a natural plant fiber which grows around the seed of the cotton plant. Fibers are used in the textile industry, where they are the starting point of the production chain. First, the cotton fiber is obtained from the cotton plant and then spun into yarn. From there, the cotton yarn is woven or knitted into fabric.
The use of cotton has a long tradition in the clothing industry due to its desirable characteristics. Cloths made of this fiber are moisture-absorbent, have a good drape and are known for their long durability. Consumers continue to purchase large amounts of cotton products as they prefer cotton’s light and comfortable qualities. Products made out of cotton range from highly absorbent bath towels over bed linens to basic clothes such as t-shirts, underwear or socks.
The top cotton producing countries include China, India and the United States respectively. Within the United States, the Southern states traditionally harvest the largest quantities of cotton. This region was formerly known as the ‘Cotton Belt’, where cotton was the predominant cash crop from the 18th to the 20th century. Due to soil depletion and social and economic changes, cotton production has declined and acres in this region are now mainly used for crops such as corn, soybeans and wheat.

Wheat production Wheat is the second most important grain that is cultivated in the United States, following only corn. Wheat is a cereal crop that can be classified into five major classes. These five wheat classes include hard red winter, hard red spring, soft red winter, white, and durum wheat. Each class has a different end-use and the cultivation tends to be region-specific. Hard red winter wheat is mainly grown in the Great Plains area ranging from Montana to Texas. This type is primarily used for the production of bread flour. Hard red spring wheat is mostly cultivated in the Northern Plains area. Their wheat ears are mainly taken for protein blending purposes. Durum wheat, which is primarily grown in North Dakota and Montana, is known for their excellent qualities for producing pasta.
