    Description

The St. Louis County historical aerial images provide a valuable visual record of the region’s changing landscape from 1937 through 2024, capturing nearly a century of growth, development, and environmental change. Due to restrictions on access and usage rights, these aerial images cannot be shared with outside individuals or organizations. This limitation ensures the protection of the data while maintaining control over its proper use within St. Louis County’s systems and authorized applications.

    Description

The St. Louis area has experienced minor earthquake damage at least 12 times in the past 205 years. The St. Louis metropolitan area, with a population of about 2.8 million, faces earthquake hazard from large earthquakes in the New Madrid and Wabash Valley seismic zones, as well as a closer region of diffuse historical and prehistoric seismicity to its south and east. Also, low attenuation of seismic energy in the region and a substantial number of historic older unreinforced brick and stone buildings make the St. Louis area vulnerable to moderate earthquakes at relatively large distances compared to the western United States. This geotechnical database was compiled by James Palmer and others at the Missouri Department of Natural Resources as the product of a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program external grant through the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) supporting urban seismic hazards mapping efforts for the St Louis metropolitan area (htt ...

    Description

At the request of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, John MiIner Associates, Inc. (JMA) conducted a National Historic Preservation Act Section 110 compliance investigation for the Chicago District. The work entailed preparation of an inventory of electronically scanned and geo-referenced historic maps and aerial photographs that could be used in planning projects undertaken by the district in support of its major missions: flood control, shoreline protection, navigation, environmental protection, and emergency management. A total of 3,501 historic maps, map sections, and aerial photographs were inventoried, electronically scanned, and geo-referenced to facilitate integration with the current level of GIS mapping used by the district. Another 182 aerial photographs were inventoried and electronically scanned, but not geo-referenced, due to district priorities and funding limitations. This ARRA funded Task Order employed 23 specialists.

    Description

These data were automated to provide an accurate high-resolution historical shoreline of St. Louis Bay to Petit Bois Island, MS suitable as a geographic information system (GIS) data layer. These data are derived from shoreline maps that were produced by the NOAA National Ocean Service including its predecessor agencies which were based on an office interpretation of imagery and/or field survey. The NGS attribution scheme 'Coastal Cartographic Object Attribute Source Table (C-COAST)' was developed to conform the attribution of various sources of shoreline data into one attribution catalog. C-COAST is not a recognized standard, but was influenced by the International Hydrographic Organization's S-57 Object-Attribute standard so the data would be more accurately translated into S-57. Description

The bulk of the thin sections in the database are poorly located or not located at all, as they temporally span the entire history of the Minnesota Geological Survey. However many of the thin sections constructed since the 1970's can be fairly easily located via old field maps and notebooks on file at the Minnesota Geological Survey. Due to the overwhelming number of sections they have been located on an 'as-needed' basis, meaning that as we progress through different mapping project areas, every attempt was made to properly locate where the sample for the thin section was taken. Several hundred thin sections have been located, mainly in northeastern Minnesota in Cook and Lake Counties, in central St. Louis County, and Itasca County. All thin sections that were made since the advent of GIS and GPS are already located, having been stored with the data for individual mapping projects.

    Description

Eastern collared lizards (Crotophytus collaris collaris) were a Missouri state endangered species when this study began in 1982 due to massive local extinction on glades in the Ozarks in central North America. Translocation coupled with glade restoration was initiated in the 1980’s, including reintroductions starting in 1984 on Stegall Mountain in southern Missouri. The translocated populations underwent three distinct demographic phases: 1) an isolate phase with no net growth in population size, no colonization of nearby glades, and almost no dispersal among populations, 2) a colonizing phase of high dispersal, colonization of new glades, and population growth that started with the onset of prescribed woodland burning, and 3) a stable metapopulation phase established by 2000 on Stegall Mountain in which the number of occupied glades, total population size, and measures of genetic variation were roughly constant. The data in this dryad submission are association with an in press paper (2022) in Animal Conservation that used these data to infer the age of 1162 marked individuals on the basis of distinct color phases and to assign age-probabilities to 391 marked individuals first captured with adult coloration based on time-of-capture within the field season and snout-vent length, as calibrated from following 529 individuals first captured as hatchlings. Age structure differed significantly between phases. The isolate phase was characterized by an old age structure. The colonization phase had a younger age structure and much more recruitment. The stable metapopulation phase had an intermediate age structure. These dynamic age structure attributes show that species cannot be regarded as static units, and ignoring this dynamism can result in poor conservation practice. These results also validate age-structure as a monitoring device for a conservation program and a tool to identify significant shifts in the environment or management that have a conservation impact, in this case prescribed woodland burning. Methods The raw information in this file was written down in field notebooks by the collector at the time of capture. All these notebooks are in the procession of Alan Templeton. Alan Templeton assembled all of these data from the field notebooks into this Excel file. Typically, the field data were entered into the Excel file the evening after a day of collection. All entries were double-checked for accuracy of transcription from the field notebooks. The maps were made by overlaying aerial photographs with extensive ground-trothing upon standard topographic maps from the USGS. Latitude and longitude of central glade positions were taken with a handheld Garmin GPS unit and then downloaded directly from the device.

Description
