TwitterMany people throughout time worked to survey the lands we now inhabit. Since the beginning of interest in the wilderness area, many cartographers have traversed Warren County and the Adirondacks and have mapped out the beautiful landscape for what it truly is. In this exhibit, you will see how some cartographers kept track of the Warren County area and how mapping as a practice developed and evolved over time. Seneca Ray Stoddard was a late 19th century photographer and cartographer born in Wilton, (Saratoga County) NY, 1844. His works helped to popularize the Adirondacks as a tourist destination and displayed the naturalistic beauty of the landscape. In his youth, he left his home to follow his desire to create illustration and advertising, and in his 20's he developed a love for photography. He went on to publish tourist guides on the Lake George and Lake Champlain regions, and in 1874 issues the first tourist map of the Adirondacks. Stoddard died in his home in Glens Falls in 1917, leaving behind a legacy of cartography and accomplishment of introducing a new found tourist hot-spot to the general public.

TwitterThe ‘Mariposa County Historical Sites Interactive Story Map’ is a new and exciting way to experience the rich history of this great county, known as ‘The Mother of Counties’. As the name suggests, a story map is combination of narrative text and images along with maps to create an enhanced learning experience. Using a desktop computer, smartphone, or a tablet, visitors can view series of maps for many of the historically significant places throughout the county. The story map consists of a series of ‘pages’, each page is a different chapter that focuses on a specific historic place in the county. The pages include maps, photos, and text to give information and context to the historical site. The scope of this story map is for the visitor spending a few days in the Mariposa County, so by no means is it an all-inclusive historical narrative. Certain sites were not included in order to provide a manageable amount of information.

We constructed a time-series spatial dataset of parcel boundaries for the period 1962-2005, in roughly 4-year intervals, by digitizing historical plat maps for Dane County and combining them with the 2005 GIS digital parcel dataset. The resulting datasets enable the consistent tracking of subdivision and development for all parcels over a given time frame. The process involved 1) dissolving and merging the 2005 digital Dane County parcel dataset based on contiguity and name, 2) further merging 2005 parcels based on the hard copy 2005 Plat book, and then 3) the reverse chronological merging of parcels to reconstruct previous years, at 4-year intervals, based on historical plat books. Additional land use information such as 1) whether a structure was actually constructed (using the companion digitized aerial photo dataset), 2) cover crop, and 3) permeable surface area, can be added to these datasets at a later date.
