    Description

In 2022, the vast majority of consumers across the globe saw their purchasing behavior become at least a little more environmentally friendly compared to five years earlier. Specifically, over a third of surveyed shoppers noticed a modest change, while nearly 30 percent said they bought sustainable products significantly more often. Nearly one in 10 respondents even claimed they had turned around their way of life in order to be environmentally sustainable.

    Sustainability premiums

As the fight against climate change becomes increasingly important, people around the world have become more willing to pay more for sustainability: in 2022, the average sustainability premium consumers around the world considered acceptable for consumer goods came to roughly 24 percent. In other words, shoppers worldwide were willing to pay up to an average of 24 percent more for sustainably produced consumer goods. Unsurprisingly, those with a higher income were willing to spend more than those with average or lower incomes.

    Sustainability initiatives of brands

Many companies and brands are aware of the ongoing trend towards protecting the environment and are taking steps to promote sustainability. Allowing shoppers to easily recycle their products, as well as measuring and tracking their own emissions, are just some examples of initiatives a considerable share of brands had taken in the past couple of years.

This statistic shows total domestic consumption expenditure in the United Kingdom (UK) from 2005 to 2023. In 2023, consumer spending in the UK increased compared to the previous year, and amounted to approximately 1.6 trillion British pounds. Household consumption expenditure looks at the overall spending on consumer goods and services of a wide variety. Some examples are government licenses and permits, such as a passport renewal or the price of train tickets to get to work. Housing may also be accounted for in these figures. This figure is measured by how much the consumer actually pays at the point of sale. All fast moving consumer goods such a beer, or cigarettes are also accounted for in this data. One part of the United Kingdom, Scotland, has seen as increase in its overall household expenditure year over year since 2009, with figures reaching over 100 billion British pounds in 2018. There was a small decrease in expenditure in 2009, which was possibly a result of the economic recession which hit all of the United Kingdom hard at this time. This drop can also be seen when looking at the whole of the United Kingdom in this statistic.

The consumer packaged goods (CPG) market size is forecast to increase by USD 1476.3 billion, at a CAGR of 4.9% between 2024 and 2029.

The market is experiencing significant shifts driven by the increasing sales of CPG products through e-commerce channels and the emergence of direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands. This digital transformation poses both opportunities and challenges for market participants. On the other hand, D2C brands, with their agile business models and direct consumer connections, are disrupting traditional CPG market dynamics. However, the market landscape is not without challenges. Global inflation and supply chain disruptions are pressing issues that threaten profitability and operational efficiency.
Companies must navigate these challenges by implementing pricing strategies that balance consumer affordability with profitability, and by strengthening their supply chain resilience through strategic partnerships and technology investments. In conclusion, the CPG market is undergoing a period of transformation, driven by digital trends and disrupted by new business models. To capitalize on opportunities and navigate challenges effectively, companies must remain agile, innovative, and consumer-centric.
