    This Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) compliant Web Map Service (WMS) includes a mosaic of historical USGS topographic maps of New Jersey surveyed from 1881 to 1924. This product is to be used for reference purposes only. The original historical paper maps were distorted or damaged to varying degrees due to age and use. During visual testing, it appeared that spatial inaccuracies in the images exceed 200 feet in several locations. The digital product has not been corrected for distortion nor vertical displacement. Consequently, this product does not meet the National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy (NSSDA). The mosaic was produced by scanning 15 minute (1:62,500 scale) historical USGS topographic paper maps at 600 dpi and saving them as Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) images. The scanned TIFFs have an approximate pixel resolution of 17 feet. The map images were georeferenced to a fishnet in their native coordinate system and then reprojected to NAD83 NJ State Plane coordinates for use in this service. In most client software, the default spatial reference system of the service will be Geographic Coordinates, WGS84. Several other coordinate systems are supported natively by the WMS (see Supplemental Information).

    The ArcGIS Online US Geological Survey (USGS) topographic map collection now contains over 177,000 historical quadrangle maps dating from 1882 to 2006. The USGS Historical Topographic Map Explorer app brings these maps to life through an interface that guides users through the steps for exploring the map collection:Find a location of interest.View the maps.Compare the maps.Download and share the maps or open them in ArcGIS Desktop (ArcGIS Pro or ArcMap) where places will appear in their correct geographic location. Save the maps in an ArcGIS Online web map.

    Finding the maps of interest is simple. Users can see a footprint of the map in the map view before they decide to add it to the display, and thumbnails of the maps are shown in pop-ups on the timeline. The timeline also helps users find maps because they can zoom and pan, and maps at select scales can be turned on or off by using the legend boxes to the left of the timeline. Once maps have been added to the display, users can reorder them by dragging them. Users can also download maps as zipped GeoTIFF images. Users can also share the current state of the app through a hyperlink or social media. The web map will open in ArcGIS Online. The title of the web map will be the same as the top map on the side panel of the app. All historical maps that were selected in the app will appear in the Contents section of the web map with the earliest at the top and the latest at the bottom. Turning the historical maps on and off or setting the transparency on the layers allows users to compare the historical maps over time. Also, the web map can be opened in ArcGIS Desktop (ArcGIS Pro or ArcMap) and used for exploration or data capture.Users can find out more about the USGS topograhic map collection and the app by clicking on the information button at the upper right. This opens a pop-up with information about the maps and app. The pop-up includes a useful link to a USGS web page that provides access to documents with keys explaining the symbols on historic and current USGS topographic maps. The pop-up also has a link to send Esri questions or comments about the map collection or the app.We have shared the updated app on GitHub, so users can download it and configure it to work with their own map collections.

    The Digital Geologic-GIS Map of Sagamore Hill National Historic Site and Vicinity, New York is composed of GIS data layers and GIS tables, and is available in the following GRI-supported GIS data formats: 1.) a 10.1 file geodatabase (sahi_geology.gdb), a 2.) Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) geopackage, and 3.) 2.2 KMZ/KML file for use in Google Earth, however, this format version of the map is limited in data layers presented and in access to GRI ancillary table information. The file geodatabase format is supported with a 1.) ArcGIS Pro map file (.mapx) file (sahi_geology.mapx) and individual Pro layer (.lyrx) files (for each GIS data layer), as well as with a 2.) 10.1 ArcMap (.mxd) map document (sahi_geology.mxd) and individual 10.1 layer (.lyr) files (for each GIS data layer). The OGC geopackage is supported with a QGIS project (.qgz) file. Upon request, the GIS data is also available in ESRI 10.1 shapefile format. Contact Stephanie O'Meara (see contact information below) to acquire the GIS data in these GIS data formats. In addition to the GIS data and supporting GIS files, three additional files comprise a GRI digital geologic-GIS dataset or map: 1.) A GIS readme file (sahi_geology_gis_readme.pdf), 2.) the GRI ancillary map information document (.pdf) file (sahi_geology.pdf) which contains geologic unit descriptions, as well as other ancillary map information and graphics from the source map(s) used by the GRI in the production of the GRI digital geologic-GIS data for the park, and 3.) a user-friendly FAQ PDF version of the metadata (sahi_geology_metadata_faq.pdf). Please read the sahi_geology_gis_readme.pdf for information pertaining to the proper extraction of the GIS data and other map files. Google Earth software is available for free at: https://www.google.com/earth/versions/. QGIS software is available for free at: https://www.qgis.org/en/site/.     Description

    The ArcGIS Online USGS Topographic Maps image service contains over 181,000 historical topographic quadrangle maps (quads) dating from 1879 to 2006. These maps are part of the USGS Historical Topographic Map Collection (HTMC) which includes all the historical quads that had been printed since the USGS topographic mapping program was initiated in 1879. Previously available only as printed lithographic copies, the historical maps were scanned “as is” to create high-resolution images that capture the content and condition of each map sheet. All maps were georeferenced, and map metadata was captured as part of the process.

    For the Esri collection, the scanned maps were published as this ArcGIS Online image service which can be viewed on the web and allows users to download individual scanned images. Esri’s collection contains historical quads (excluding orthophotos) dating from 1879 to 2006 with scales ranging from 1:10,000 to 1:250,000. The scanned maps can be used in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Enterprise. They can also be downloaded as georeferenced TIFs for use in these and other applications.

    We make it easy for you to explore and download these maps, or quickly create an ArcGIS Online map, using our Historical Topo Map Explorer app. The app provides a visual interface to search and explore the historical maps by geographic extent, publication year, and map scale. And you can overlay the historical maps on a satellite image or 3D hillshade and add labels for current geographic features.

    Historical FiresLast updated on 06/17/2022OverviewThe national fire history perimeter data layer of conglomerated Agency Authoratative perimeters was developed in support of the WFDSS application and wildfire decision support for the 2021 fire season. The layer encompasses the final fire perimeter datasets of the USDA Forest Service, US Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Fish and Wildlife Service, and National Park Service, the Alaska Interagency Fire Center, CalFire, and WFIGS History. Perimeters are included thru the 2021 fire season. Requirements for fire perimeter inclusion, such as minimum acreage requirements, are set by the contributing agencies. WFIGS, NPS and CALFIRE data now include Prescribed Burns.     CAL FIRE's Fire and Resource Assessment Program (FRAP) annually maintains and distributes an historical fire perimeter dataset from across public and private lands in California. The GIS data is developed with the cooperation of the United States Forest Service Region 5, the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and is released in the spring with added data from the previous calendar year. Although the dataset represents the most complete digital record of fire perimeters in California, it is still incomplete, and users should be cautious when drawing conclusions based on the data. This map highlights the recent large fires (≥5,000 acres) on a backdrop of all of the dataset's documented fire perimeters dating back to 1878. This map includes perimeters symbolized by decade, county boundaries, California vegetation, and NAIP imagery back to 2005.     Most people don't know the history of their street, neighborhood, or even city. The Pittsburgh Mapping and Historical Site Viewer provides a window into the past, allowing anyone to see how the city took shape over time. It shows how the city of 22,433 people in 1835 changes over time: how neighborhoods grow and expand, while others were planned but never built. Street names change over time, empty lots become buildings, and schools and churches open and close. The maps were made by cutting and georeferencing hand-drawn paper maps made over 100 years ago. Using historic maps, some more than 175 years old, this interactive map highlights sites in the National Registry of Historic Places among others. By browsing through the years at a location, you'll find a cemetery that became a school, the arrival of rail yards, and other indicators of how the city has evolved around changes in transportation, industry, and population. This map service includes a mosaic of several volumes of plat maps that were originally bound atlases. The mosaic was created using ArcGIS software from the scanned JPEG images, varying from 300-600 dpi. These images were obtained from the Historic Pittsburgh website (http://digital.library.pitt.edu/maps/hopkins.html) The images were georeferenced to WGS84 Web Mercator and the borders were clipped to create a contiguous map.This product is to be used for reference purposes only. The original historical paper maps were sometimes damaged or distorted to varying degrees due to age and use.     This app contains three pages of maps and documentation of the historical fire perimeter metadata:

    Historical Fire Perimeters: The landing page highlights the recent large fires (≥5,000 acres) on a backdrop of all of the dataset's documented fire perimeters dating back to 1878. This map includes perimeters symbolized by decade, county boundaries, California Vegetation, and NAIP imagery back to 2005. This page provides users the ability to add their own data or filter the fire perimeter data. It cleanly lists fire perimeters shown on the map with their name, year, and GIS calculated acreage. The user can navigate to the CAL FIRE current incident webpage or provide comments to the dataset's steward.

    Times Burned: The second page provides a map showing an analysis performed annually on the fire perimeter dataset to show case burn frequency from 1950 to present for fires greater than one acre.

    Fire Across Time: This third page provides a time enabled layer of the fire perimeter dataset, featuring a time slider to allow users to view the perimeter dataset across time.

    The final page provides the user with the dataset's metadata, including its most current data dictionary.

    The files linked to this reference are the geospatial data created as part of the completion of the baseline vegetation inventory project for the NPS park unit. Current format is ArcGIS file geodatabase but older formats may exist as shapefiles. GIS Database 2002-2005: Project Size = 1,898 acres Fort Larned National Historic Site (including the Rut Site) = 705 acres 16 Map Classes 11 Vegetated 5 Non-vegetated Minimum Mapping Unit = ½ hectare is the program standard but this was modified at FOLS to ¼ acre. Total Size = 229 Polygons Average Polygon Size = 8.3 acres Overall Thematic Accuracy = 92% To produce the digital map, a combination of 1:8,500-scale (0.75 meter pixels) color infrared digital ortho-imagery acquired on October 26, 2005 by the Kansas Applied Remote Sensing Program and 1:12,000-scale true color ortho-rectified imagery acquired in 2005 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Farm Service Agency’s Aerial Photography Field Office, and all of the GPS referenced ground data were used to interpret the complex patterns of vegetation and land-use. In the end, 16 map units (11 vegetated and 5 land-use) were developed and directly cross-walked or matched to corresponding plant associations and land-use classes. All of the interpreted and remotely sensed data were converted to Geographic Information System (GIS) databases using ArcGIS© software. Draft maps were printed, field tested, reviewed and revised. One hundred and six accuracy assessment (AA) data points were collected in 2006 by KNSHI and used to determine the map’s accuracy. After final revisions, the accuracy assessment revealed an overall thematic accuracy of 92%.

    Description

    The year 2026 is an important one for not only Route 66, but the nation as a whole: the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence will be celebrated July 4th, and November 11th marks one hundred years since the official dedication of the numbered highway system from which Route 66 was born. Both the country and the "Mother Road" share a rich history, with Route 66 serving as an icon through the nation's many eras of the past century.The route winds across the American West, a land with a history extending far beyond these anniversaries. One of the most interesting ways to explore the evolving identity of the region and the road is through the maps that were made to document them over the years. This contribution to the ROUTE 66 REMAP StoryMap series includes a collection of maps from the past several centuries, each adding a piece to the complex and fascinating story of Route 66. Using the power of GIS, we have not only georeferenced these maps, but also annotated them with different layers of data that enhance our understanding of the stories they tell.

Description

This Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) compliant Web Map Service (WMS) includes a mosaic of historical USGS topographic maps of New Jersey surveyed from 1881 to 1924. This product is to be used for reference purposes only. The original historical paper maps were distorted or damaged to varying degrees due to age and use. During visual testing, it appeared that spatial inaccuracies in the images exceed 200 feet in several locations. The digital product has not been corrected for distortion nor vertical displacement. Consequently, this product does not meet the National Standard for Spatial Data Accuracy (NSSDA). The mosaic was produced by scanning 15 minute (1:62,500 scale) historical USGS topographic paper maps at 600 dpi and saving them as Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) images. The scanned TIFFs have an approximate pixel resolution of 17 feet. The map images were georeferenced to a fishnet in their native coordinate system and then reprojected to NAD83 NJ State Plane coordinates for use in this service. In most client software, the default spatial reference system of the service will be Geographic Coordinates, WGS84. Several other coordinate systems are supported natively by the WMS (see Supplemental Information).
