As of 2023, around 2.96 million cattle were slaughtered domestically in Germany. Figures were preliminary and refer to commercial trade. The number of domestically slaughtered cattle far exceeded foreign origins during the timeline at hand. However, as such domestic figures decreased annually.
Declining cattle population
Germany’s cattle population has been gradually shrinking in recent years, amounting to around 10.94 million animals in 2023. For comparison, there were roughly 19.5 million in 1990. Various sources are concerned about the decline in the German cattle population, which is occurring for several reasons. Farmers may not be able to continue raising livestock due to rising costs across the board, with the increased energy prices since 2022 being a blow for those already struggling. A shortage of skilled workers is another issue, an example being veterinarians. While fewer cattle means less meat and other products available domestically, therefore also higher producer prices for beef and milk, current economic difficulties may still contribute to less cattle farming.
Beef producers and exporters
On a global scale, the two leading beef producers were found across the pond. The United States was in first place, followed by Brazil and China. The cattle industry as such faces increased scrutiny in various countries in terms of animal husbandry and manufacturing processes. The interest in vegan diets around the world may also influence long-term demand for and production of beef, not to mention meat in general.
