TwitterThe first recorded cases of COVID 19 in São Tomé and Príncipe (STP) emerged on April 6, 2020. Since then, the Government has implemented strict measures to contain the spread of the virus. In addition, the closure of air space has drastically reduced air transport activities, making it difficult to carry out one of the most important activities in the country, which is Hotel and Catering (Tourism) as well as non-food trade activities.
The COVID-19 pandemic and its economic and social impacts on families have created an urgent need for up-to-date data to help monitor and mitigate the impacts of the crisis and protect the well-being of the least favored in STP society. To monitor how the COVID-19 pandemic affects STP’s economy and population and to substantiate response policies with data, the National Statistical Institute (INE), with technical support from the World Bank, has designed and conducted a telephone Household Monitoring Survey (HMS). With support from the United Nations, the survey was expanded to include a questionnaire aimed at informal businesses.
This survey included all districts: Lembá, Lobata, Água Grande, Me Zochi, Cantagalo, Cauê, and the Príncipe Autonomous Region (RAP).
Household
Each round of the STP COVID-19 HMS has ONE RESPONDENT per household. The respondent was the household head or a knowledgeable adult household member. The respondent must be a member of the household.
Sample survey data [ssd]
The STP COVID-19 HMS sample consists of a subsample of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) carried out by INE in collaboration with UNICEF in 2019. Households with access to a telephone are represented in the HMS, covering urban and rural areas in all STP regions. The HMS called all households with a valid telephone number listed in MICS, completing 1,025 interviews (413 in rural areas and 612 in urban areas).
Among the 3,426 households interviewed in the MICS 2019, 1,400 (40.8%) provided at least one phone number. From these, 1,081 were successfully contacted by INE interviewers and 1,025 accepted and answered all the questions made in the first round of the HMS.
To mitigate bias in a sample that contains only households with a working telephone, a procedure for adjusting the sample weights was carried out using the Propensity Score Weighting (PSW) methodology. Following this procedure, the HMS results were brought closer to the national representativeness of surveys carried out in person, such as MICS 2019.
Computer Assisted Personal Interview [capi]
The questionnaire is structured and available for download in Portuguese, under the Documentation tab.
Data Cleaning The data cleaning process was done in two main stages. The first stage was to ensure proper quality control during the fieldwork. This was achieved in part by incorporating validation and consistency checks into the Survey Solutions application used for the data collection and designed to highlight many of the errors that occurred during the fieldwork. The second stage of cleaning involved a comprehensive review of the final raw data following the first stage cleaning. Every variable was examined individually for (1) consistency with other sections and variables, (2) out of range responses, and (3) formatting. Some minor errors remain in the data where the diagnosis and/or solution were unclear to the data cleaning team.
Sample size was 1,400 households, of which 1,025 completed the forms in full.

TwitterBackground and aimPatients diagnosed with cancer, particularly those with hematologic malignancies, frequently exhibit a state of immunosuppression. Currently, there remains a scarcity of dependable biomarkers for assessing the severity of COVID-19 in individuals with hematologic malignancies. We conducted a retrospective study of morbidity and mortality in patients with hematological malignancies (HM) who had contracted COVID-19. The aim was to offer a reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment.MethodsA total of 71 patients with HM-confirmed COVID-19 were enrolled from December 2022 to May 2023. Clinical symptoms, laboratory findings, and treatment approaches were collected and documented. Patients were classified into survival and death groups based on their COVID-19 outcomes, and statistical analysis was performed on the clinical data from both groups.ResultsAmong the 71 patients, 57 (80.3%) were alive, and 14 (19.7%) had died. The mean age of patients in the death group was significantly higher than that of the survival group (51.29 ± 20.76 vs. 49.47 ± 13.04, P=0.030). The proportion of patients receiving mechanical ventilation was significantly higher in the death group (P<0.001). The mortality rate was significantly higher in the critically severe group compared to the mild, moderate, and severe groups (P<0.001). Correlation analysis revealed that certain laboratory indicators lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH), albumin (ALB), creatine kinase (CK), troponin T (TnT), N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and fibrin degradation product (FDP), which exhibited significant differences between groups, were significantly correlated with COVID-19-related mortality (all P<0.05). The Cox proportional hazards model indicated that LDH was an independent risk factor associated with the prognosis of HM-confirmed COVID-19.ConclusionPatients with hematologic malignancies suffer severe morbidity and mortality due to COVID-19 infection. LDH may serve as a risk factor associated with prognosis in the treatment of COVID-19. Monitoring variations in LDH levels can assist healthcare providers in evaluating disease progression, adjusting treatment plans in a timely manner, and predicting patient outcomes.

TwitterThe Opinions and Lifestyle Survey (OPN) is an omnibus survey that collects data from respondents in Great Britain. Information is gathered on a range of subjects, commissioned both internally by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and by external clients (other government departments, charities, non-profit organisations and academia). One individual respondent, aged 16 or over, is selected from each sampled private household to answer questions. Data are gathered on the respondent, their family, address, household, income and education, plus responses and opinions on a variety of subjects within commissioned modules. Each regular OPN survey consists of two elements. Core questions, covering demographic information, are asked together with non-core questions that vary depending on the module(s) fielded. The OPN collects timely data for research and policy analysis evaluation on the social impacts of recent topics of national importance, such as the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the cost of living. The OPN has expanded to include questions on other topics of national importance, such as health and the cost of living. For more information about the survey and its methodology, see the gov.uk OPN Quality and Methodology Information (QMI) webpage.Changes over timeUp to March 2018, the OPN was conducted as a face-to-face survey. From April 2018 to November 2019, the OPN changed to a mixed-mode design (online first with telephone interviewing where necessary). Mixed-mode collection allows respondents to complete the survey more flexibly and provides a more cost-effective service for module customers. In March 2020, the OPN was adapted to become a weekly survey used to collect data on the social impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the lives of people of Great Britain. These data are held under Secure Access conditions in SN 8635, ONS Opinions and Lifestyle Survey, 2019-2023: Secure Access. (See below for information on other Secure Access OPN modules.)From August 2021, as coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions were lifted across Great Britain, the OPN moved to fortnightly data collection, sampling around 5,000 households in each survey wave to ensure the survey remained sustainable. Secure Access OPN modulesBesides SN 8635 (which includes the COVID-19 Module), other Secure Access OPN data includes sensitive modules run at various points from 1997-2019, including Census religion (SN 8078), cervical cancer screening (SN 8080), contact after separation (SN 8089), contraception (SN 8095), disability (SNs 8680 and 8096), general lifestyle (SN 8092), illness and activity (SN 8094), and non-resident parental contact (SN 8093). See the individual studies for further details and information on how to apply to use them.
The non-core questions for this month were: Tobacco consumption (Module 210): this module was asked on behalf of HM Revenue and Customs to help estimate the amount of tobacco consumed as cigarettes. Due to the potentially sensitive nature of the data within this module, cases for respondents aged under 18 have been removed. Well-Being (Module MCZ): this module was asked on behalf of the Office for National Statistics and all questions ask respondents to rate their well-being on a scale of 0-10, where 0 is generally low and 10 high.

TwitterHM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and HM Treasury (HMT) remain committed to supporting employees and employers affected by coronavirus (COVID-19).
The government introduced an unprecedented package of measures in March 2020 to protect millions of jobs and incomes to help ease the financial burden for businesses and the UK population. The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme was one of the schemes introduced at pace.
The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme Evaluation Plan outlines the framework for evaluating the scheme. HMRC and HMT are publishing this plan to provide transparency of our evaluation approach.
The evaluation will assess the delivery of the scheme, the difference it has made to employees and businesses, as well as what lessons can be learned from its delivery and how it can inform future policy making.
Additionally, the evaluation will determine how the scheme has supported the longer-term economic recovery and the extent to which it provided good use of public funds.
If you have questions or comments about this plan, please contact Cecile Morales cecile.morales@hmrc.gov.uk.
