European countries have some of the highest natural gas prices for households worldwide. Natural gas prices for households vary greatly around the world, depending on governmental levies, taxes, as well as local production. In Sweden, prices averaged 0.24 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour in December 2023, whilst prices in Canada, a producer of natural gas, were just 0.04 U.S. dollars per kilowatt-hour.

Residential consumers of natural gas in the United Kingdom paid an average of 9.1 U.S. dollar cents per kilowatt hour. This was the lowest value since September 2022. The residential and commercial sectors are the largest consumers of natural gas in the country.

Since 1995, the overall price of natural gas has increased for households with consumption of less than 200 GJ and more than 200 GJ. Prices for a consumption of 20 GJ to < 200 GJ peaked in 2015 at 6.52 euro cents per kilowatt hour. Although prices have seen an overall increase, natural gas consumption has been in decline over the past decade.

The total price is the price paid by an end-user, for instance a household or an industrial company consuming energy in their production process. Natural gas used for non-energy purposes or for electricity generation is excluded from the data.

The price cap set by the Dutch government for 2023 has now been incorporated into the prices.

In 2023, Sweden was the European Union member with the highest household natural gas price for an annual consumption greater than *** gigajoules, at more than ** euro cents per kilowatt-hour. The second-highest household gas price was recorded in the Netherlands, at **** euro cents per kilowatt-hour. At the opposite end of the ranking, Hungary exhibited the lowest price for this consumption range, at *** euro cents per kilowatt-hour.

In the fourth quarter of 2023, the price of liquefied natural gas in India reached 589 USD/MT by December. Similarly, in Germany, the liquefied natural gas prices hit 654 USD/MT during the same month in 2023.

The household price of natural gas in Italy reached the unprecedented level of 14 euro cents per kilowatt-hour in the second semester of 2022. This price was caused by the cut-off of energy exports from Russia and the consequent energy crisis. Prices had decreased to 10.44 by June 2023. Italy’s dependence on gas imports The domestic production of natural gas in Italy in 2022 was just above three billion cubic meters. Natural gas consumption in Italy was over 20 times larger. This leaves Italy heavily dependent on foreign gas imports. Besides Russia, whose imports to Europe decreased sensibly in 2022 and 2023, the main natural gas importers to Italy in were Algeria and Azerbaijan. Natural gas taxation among the highest in Europe Italy had some of the highest natural gas prices in Europe. This was due to the heavy dependence on natural gas imports and on the high taxation applied to fuel consumption in this country. The value-added tax on natural gas in Italy accounted for 22 percent of the household gas price in Italy in the first semester of 2022. In Italy, consumers also pay an additional regional tax and a second tax based on the energy consumed. In 2022 and 2023, the value-added tax was decreased by the Italian government to five percent, to help the consumers face the natural gas cost increase.

The Average Home Heating Oil Prices dataset provides New York residents and businesses with objective information on average residential retail heating fuel oil pricing in New York State and by region beginning September 8, 1997. Pricing data is obtained via surveys conducted by NYSERDA staff on a weekly basis during heating season (September to March) and bi-weekly during the rest of the year. All prices are listed in dollars per gallon.
