    Time period covered
    2015 - 2030
    Description

Over the past five years, the Global Hotels and Resorts industry has expanded. The current period started with a pandemic-low revenue level. As business and travel activities gradually resumed, industry revenue surpassed the pre-pandemic level in 2023. However, rising inflation following the pandemic and geopolitical tensions depressed the potential revenue growth. Further, stringent fatal aviation accidents and potential tariff war further deteriorate consumer confidence, inducing them to put off travel plans. Overall, industry revenue is expected to grow at an annualized rate of 14.2% to $1.8 trillion over the five years to 2025, including a 2.4% growth in 2025. In the same year, profit is also expected to reach 18.5%. While the prominence of well-known hotel chains looms over the industry, it still experiences low concentration since it has numerous small independent hotels. Due to low concentration, the industry remains highly competitive, and the steady increase in the supply of new hotel rooms has limited the hotels' ability to raise room prices. However, the industry is changing and continues to become more consolidated. This gives larger chains control over industry parts through loyalty programs and discounted pricing structures. Over the next five years, the largest growth will likely be in Asia and the Pacific, which will help emerging economies surpass several developed economies as favored destinations for tourists. However, uncertainty in some markets, specifically those with political and health risks, will hamper consumer sentiment early during the outlook period, placing pressure on hotels. Further, the potential tariff war between the US and other powerhouses such as China and the EU will likely affect travel rates as these countries strengthen their border control. Even so, more hotels and resorts will be built due to travel rates expected to rise overall, which should drive industry revenue growth. Overall, industry revenue is projected to increase at an annualized rate of 2.2% to $2.0 trillion over the five years to 2030.

    Europe
    Description

Hotels and short-term accommodation providers in Europe enjoy strong demand due to the continent’s well-developed tourism sector and significant number of holiday destinations that cater to various consumer needs. European residents often holiday domestically or go on trips to other European countries due to how quick and easy it is to travel to them. Rising domestic and international tourism has fuelled accommodation demand across the continent, though companies have faced strong competition from short-term lets. Revenue is slated to inch downward at a compound annual rate of 0.1% over the five years through 2025 to €202.8 billion, including an expected 0.2% drop in 2025. Despite the numerous popular holiday spots spread across Europe, including Spain, Italy and France, hotels and other holiday accommodation providers weren’t prepared for the catastrophic drop in tourism caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The easing of travel restrictions in 2021 and 2022 drove revenue back up, supported mostly by heightened domestic tourism due to heightened consumer confidence and a trend towards staycations. International travel recovered and drove up occupancy rates and RevPAR, especially in the upscale and luxury segments. Since 2022, though, severe inflation and heightened economic and geopolitical uncertainty have squeezed consumers’ budgets, limiting spending on holidays. European hotels and short-term accommodation providers face intense competition, putting pressure on prices and RevPAR. The popularity of online booking platforms like Airbnb has played a big part in increasing competitive pressures. To attract potential guests, accommodation providers are adopting dynamic pricing strategies and investing in enhancing the customer experience through innovation and differentiation. The use of advanced technology and the wellness tourism trend have shaped the industry’s focus. Nonetheless, intense competition and elevated operating costs like rent, purchases and wages have constrained profit. Revenue is forecast to swell at a compound annual rate of 2.5% over the five years through 2030 to €229.3 billion. A mounting number of international guests and strong demand for domestic holidays will drive growth. Climbing disposable income and wealthy international tourists flocking to European destinations is set to stimulate spending on upscale hotels and holiday accommodation. Regulatory crackdowns on short-term rentals in many European countries may ease competitive pressures, while escalating consumer demand for sustainable travel is driving providers to adapt. Innovation, sustainability and guest-centric strategies will be key to capturing market share and responding to evolving traveller expectations.

    Luxury Hotels Market Outlook

The global luxury hotels market size was valued at approximately USD 95 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 160 billion by 2032, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.8% during the forecast period of 2024-2032. The primary driving factor for this growth is the rising number of affluent individuals and the increasing inclination towards travel and leisure activities that emphasize unique and high-end experiences. This trend is compounded by the expansion of tourism infrastructure, government initiatives to boost tourism, and the growing influence of social media platforms showcasing luxury travel experiences. The market is poised for continuous growth as global economic conditions improve, enabling more consumers to afford luxury accommodations.

A significant growth factor for the luxury hotels market is the increased disposable income and changing lifestyle preferences of a global audience. As more individuals seek experiences that offer luxurious comfort and prestige, the demand for upscale amenities and personalized services provided by luxury hotels rises. This is further fueled by the emerging consumer trend favoring experiences over material possessions, driving people towards investing in travel and accommodation that offer exceptional experiences. The hospitality industry is witnessing an upsurge in demand for unique, culturally immersive, and high-quality service offerings, thereby pushing the boundaries of luxury and redefining what constitutes a luxury experience.

The rapid advancements in technology have also been a crucial catalyst for growth in the luxury hotels market. With technology, luxury hotels are now capable of offering personalized services that cater to the individual preferences of their guests. From AI-driven customer service to IoT-enabled rooms that allow guests to control various aspects of their environment through mobile devices, technology has become a pivotal element in enhancing the guest experience. This technological integration not only aids in providing a seamless experience but also attracts a tech-savvy clientele that values innovation and convenience as part of their luxury stay.

Furthermore, environmental sustainability and eco-friendly practices are becoming increasingly important to luxury hotel consumers, particularly millennials and Gen Z travelers who are more environmentally conscious. Luxury hotels are investing in sustainability initiatives, such as reducing carbon footprints, using sustainable materials, and ensuring energy efficiency, to appeal to this growing consumer base. The commitment to sustainability not only enhances a hotel's brand image but also meets the rising consumer demand for responsible and sustainable tourism. This shift towards sustainable luxury is opening new avenues for growth and differentiation in the competitive luxury hotels market.

In recent years, the concept of a Luxury Pet Friendly Hotel has gained traction, reflecting the evolving needs of travelers who consider their pets as part of the family. These hotels offer an array of amenities designed specifically for pets, such as gourmet pet menus, pet spa services, and designated play areas, ensuring that both guests and their furry companions enjoy a luxurious stay. The rise of pet-friendly luxury accommodations is driven by the increasing number of pet owners who are unwilling to leave their pets behind when traveling. This trend is not only enhancing the guest experience but also opening new revenue streams for luxury hotels, as they cater to a niche market that values inclusivity and exceptional service for all family members, including pets.

Regionally, the Asia Pacific market is anticipated to exhibit significant growth due to the rising disposable incomes and the growing middle-class population in countries such as China and India. These countries are seeing a surge in domestic and international tourism, which boosts the demand for luxury accommodations. Additionally, North America remains a strong market for luxury hotels due to the established tourism infrastructure, significant numbers of business and leisure travelers, and the presence of numerous luxury hotel chains. Europe, with its rich cultural heritage and historical tourism appeal, continues to be a key player in the luxury hotel market, attracting high-net-worth individuals from across the globe.

    Description

This table presents an overview of of the capacity (type of accommodation, rooms, beds) in the Netherlands in all hotels, motels, boarding houses, apartments with hotel services, youth accommodation and bed & breakfasts with at least 5 sleeping places. The figures can be broken down by star rating. Figures are available for The Netherlands as a whole, and for the city of Amsterdam.

The breakdown by star rating is based on the opinion of the accommodation itself. The star rating does not have to be officially registered. The breakdown contains all types of accommodation mentioned above, not just hotels. The '5 stars' category contains 5 star hotels, but also for instance 5 star bed&breakfasts.

Break in series: Figures on guests and overnight stays per star rating for the years until 2015, that were published before, were based on offical registrations of the number of stars by the 'Bedrijfschap Horeca en Catering'. This official registration does no longer exist. Therefore, Statistics Netherlands started asking accommodations about their number of stars in its annual survey. For this reason, the figures in this table are not directly comparable with figures published about the years until 2015.

    Data available from: 2017

Status of the figures: The figures for 2024 and 2025 are provisional and all other figures are final.

Changes as of 11 September 2025: The provisional figures for July 2025 have been added.

When will new figures be published? Figures of a new month become available within three months after the end of that month, these are provisional figures.
