In Scotland, there were slightly less new dwellings whose construction started in 2022/23 than in the previous financial year. This made 2019/20 the year with the highest volume of construction starts for dwellings since 2006/07, when the construction of 28,400 new homes in Scotland started. On the other side of the spectrum, 2010/11 was the year with the lowest volume of housing starts at 13,500 units.

The number of completed housing in Scotland in 2023 was lower than in the previous year. That came after a couple of years of increasing numbers of housing completions after 2020, which was, in fact, the year with the least number of homes completed throughout the whole timeline included here. Dwelling completions in England also fell sharply in 2020.
