    Description

A curated list of food prices in South Africa, reported monthly on http://www.pacsa.org.za "What is the PACSA Food Basket? The PACSA Food Basket is an index for food price inflation. It provides insight into the affordability of food and other essential household requirements for working class households in a context of low wages, social grants and high levels of unemployment. The PACSA Food Basket tracks the prices of a basket of 36 basic foods which working class poor households, with 7 members, said they buy every month (based on conversations with women). The food basket is not nutritionally complete; it is a reflection of reality - what people are buying. Data is collected on the same day between the 21st and 24th of each month from six different retail stores which service the lower-income market in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. Women have told us that they base their purchasing decisions on price and whether the quality of the food is not too poor. Women are savy shoppers and so foods and their prices in each store are selected on this basis. The PACSA Food Basket tracks the foods working class households buy, in the quantities they buy them in and from the supermarkets they buy them from. PACSA has been tracking the price of the basket since 2006. We release our Food Price Barometer monthly and consolidate the data for an annual report to coincide with World Food Day annually on the 16th October." - PACSA website

    Description

This table contains data on the average cost of a market basket of nutritious food items relative to income for female-headed households with children, for California, its regions, counties, and cities/towns. The ratio uses data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Census Bureau. The table is part of a series of indicators in the Healthy Communities Data and Indicators Project of the Office of Health Equity. An adequate, nutritious diet is a necessity at all stages of life. Inadequate diets can impair intellectual performance and have been linked to more frequent school absence and poorer educational achievement in children. Nutrition also plays a significant role in causing or preventing a number of illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease, some cancers, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and anemia. At least two factors influence the affordability of food and the dietary choices of families – the cost of food and family income. The inability to afford food is a major factor in food insecurity, which has a spectrum of effects including anxiety over food sufficiency or food shortages; reduced quality or desirability of diet; and disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake. More information about the data table and a data dictionary can be found in the Attachments.

This data set reports these comparisons for a variety of foods sold through retail food stores such as supermarkets and super centers. Comparisons are made for individual foods and groupings of individual foods-market baskets-that represent what a typical U.S. household buys at retail in a year. The retail costs of these baskets are compared with the money received by farmers for a corresponding basket of agricultural commodities. This record was taken from the USDA Enterprise Data Inventory that feeds into the https://data.gov catalog. Description

The global food basket market is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing demand from the food service industry, a surge in online grocery shopping, and the rising popularity of sustainable and eco-friendly packaging options. The market's segmentation reveals a strong preference for bamboo and wood baskets due to their natural appeal and biodegradability, although plastic and metal baskets maintain a significant presence due to their durability and cost-effectiveness. The online sales channel is witnessing substantial growth, fueled by the convenience of e-commerce and home delivery services, complementing the established offline sales channels like supermarkets and specialty stores. While the market is fragmented, with numerous players catering to specific niches, larger companies like The Container Store and New Star Foodservice are driving consolidation and innovation. Geographic analysis suggests North America and Europe currently hold the largest market shares, although Asia-Pacific is projected to experience the fastest growth rate due to increasing disposable incomes and changing consumer preferences. Factors such as fluctuating raw material prices and the growing environmental awareness among consumers pose challenges and opportunities for market players, encouraging the development of innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective food basket solutions. The forecast period (2025-2033) anticipates a continued upward trajectory, with a projected Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of approximately 5-7% (estimated based on typical growth rates in related consumer goods markets). This growth will be fueled by the continuous expansion of e-commerce, the increasing adoption of sustainable packaging options, and the ongoing demand from the food service industry. To maintain competitiveness, manufacturers will need to focus on innovation, product diversification, and supply chain optimization. The rising consumer awareness regarding environmental sustainability presents opportunities for companies offering eco-friendly, biodegradable food baskets made from bamboo, wood, or recycled materials. Regional expansion into rapidly developing economies will also be crucial for maximizing market share. Price competition remains a significant factor, requiring companies to balance profitability with competitive pricing strategies.

We adjust SNAP maximum allotments, deductions, and income eligibility standards at the beginning of each Federal fiscal year. The changes are based on changes in the cost of living. COLAs take effect on October 1 each year. Maximum allotments are calculated from the cost of a market basket based on the Thrifty Food Plan for a family of four, priced in June that year. The maximum allotments for households larger and smaller than four persons are determined using formulas that account for economies of scale. Smaller households get slightly more per person than the four-person household. Larger households get slightly less. Income eligibility standards are set by law. Gross monthly income limits are set at 130 percent of the poverty level for the household size. Net monthly income limits are set at 100 percent of poverty.
