Income, consumption and wealth (ICW) statistics are experimental statistics computed by Eurostat through the statistical matching of three data sources: the EU Statistics on Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC), the Household Budget Survey (HBS) and the Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS). These statistics enable us to observe at the same time the income that households receive, their expenditures and their accumulated wealth.
The annual collection of EU-SILC was launched in 2003 and is governed by Regulation 1700/2019 (previously: Regulation 1177/2003) of the European Parliament and of the Council. The EU-SILC collects cross-sectional and longitudinal information on income. HBS is a survey conducted every 5 years on the basis of an agreement between Eurostat, the Member States and EFTA countries. Data are collected using national questionnaires and, in most cases, expenditure diaries that respondents are asked to keep over a certain period of time. HFCS collects information on assets, liabilities, and to a limited extent income and consumption, of households. The survey is run by National Central Banks and coordinated by the European Central Bank.
This page focuses on the main issues of importance for the use and interpretation of ICW statistics. Information on the primary data sources can be found on the respective EU-SILC and HBS metadata pages and following the links provided in the sections 'related metadata' and 'annexes' below.
Experimental ICW statistics cover six topics: household economic resources, affordability of essential services, saving rates, poverty, household characteristics and taxation. Each topic contains several indicators with a number of different breakdowns, mainly by income quantile, by the age group of the household reference person, by household type, by the educational attainment level of the reference person, by the activity status of the reference person and by the degree of urbanization of the household. The indicators provide information on the joint distribution of income, consumption and wealth and the links between these three economic dimensions. They help to describe households' economic vulnerability and material well-being. They also help to explain the dynamics of wealth inequalities.
All indicators are to be understood to describe households, not persons. Breakdowns by age group, educational attainment level and activity status refer to the household reference person, which is the person with the highest income. The only exception are the tables icw_pov_01, icw_pov_10, icw_pov_11 and icw_pov_12 for which the income, consumption and wealth of households have been equivalised such that equal shares were attributed to each household member. Values in tables icw_aff are calculated for households reporting non-zero values only.
Note on table icw _res_01 and icw_res_02: The indicator “Households” [HH] in icw_res_01 shows the share of households in the selection, which hold the corresponding shares of total disposable income [INC_DISP], consumption expenditure [EXPN_CONS] and net wealth [WLTH_NET] of the entire population. In theory, turning two of the three dimensions [quant_inc, quant_expn, quant_wlth] to TOTAL and the third one to any quintile, should result into a share of 20% of households. Nevertheless, this share is often below or above 20% of the total population of households in the country. The reason for this is that our figures are based on sample surveys. This means that the share of households corresponds indeed to 20% of households in the sample, however when we multiply each household of the sample with its sampling weight, the resulting shares of households in the total population differ from the 20%. If, for example, we disregard the income and wealth of households in our sample, the first consumption quintile contains the 20% of households with lowest consumption in the sample. However, multiplying this selection of households with their corresponding sampling weights may result into a different share of the total population. The “Households” [HH] indicator indicates the real share of households in the population that make up the theoretical quintile.

TwitterIn 2024, the median household income in the United States was 83,730 U.S. dollars. This reflected an increase from the previous year. Household income The median household income depicts the income of households, including the income of the householder and all other individuals aged 15 years or over living in the household. Income includes wages and salaries, unemployment insurance, disability payments, child support payments received, regular rental receipts, as well as any personal business, investment, or other kinds of income received routinely. The median household income in the United States varied from state to state. In 2024, Massachusetts recorded the highest median household income in the country, at 113,900 U.S. dollars. On the other hand, Mississippi, recorded the lowest, at 55,980 U.S. dollars.Household income is also used to determine the poverty rate in the United States. In 2024, 10.6 percent of the U.S. population was living below the national poverty line. This was the lowest level since 2019. Similarly, the child poverty rate, which represents people under the age of 18 living in poverty, reached a three-decade low of 14.3 percent of the children. The state with the widest gap between the rich and the poor was New York, with a Gini coefficient score of 0.52 in 2024. The Gini coefficient is calculated by looking at average income rates. A score of zero would reflect perfect income equality, while a score of one indicates complete inequality.

The estimated median household income and estimated median family income are two separate measures: every family is a household, but not every household is a family. According to the U.S. Census Bureau definitions of the terms, a family “includes a householder and one or more people living in the same household who are related to the householder by birth, marriage, or adoption,”[1] while a household “includes all the people who occupy a housing unit,” including households of just one person[2]. When evaluated together, the estimated median household income and estimated median family income provide a thorough picture of household-level economics in Champaign County.
Both estimated median household income and estimated median family income were higher in 2024 than in 2005. The change in estimated median household income between 2023 and 2024 was not statistically significant. However, the increase in estimated median family income between 2023 and 2024 was statistically significant. Estimated median family income is consistently higher than estimated median household income, largely due to the definitions of each term, and the types of household that are measured and are not measured in each category.
Median income data was sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS) 1-Year Estimates, which are released annually.
As with any datasets that are estimates rather than exact counts, it is important to take into account the margins of error (listed in the column beside each figure) when drawing conclusions from the data.
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, instead of providing the standard 1-year data products, the Census Bureau released experimental estimates from the 1-year data. This includes a limited number of data tables for the nation, states, and the District of Columbia. The Census Bureau states that the 2020 ACS 1-year experimental tables use an experimental estimation methodology and should not be compared with other ACS data. For these reasons, and because data is not available for Champaign County, no data for 2020 is included in this Indicator.
For interested data users, the 2020 ACS 1-Year Experimental data release includes datasets on Median Household Income in the Past 12 Months (in 2020 Inflation-Adjusted Dollars) and Median Family Income in the Past 12 Months (in 2020 Inflation-Adjusted Dollars).

On the other hand, some 16 percent had an annual income of 200,000 U.S. dollars or more. The median household income in the country reached almost 84,000 U.S. dollars in 2024. Income and wealth in the United States After the economic recession in 2009, income inequality in the U.S. is more prominent across many metropolitan areas. The Northeast region is regarded as one of the wealthiest in the country. Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maryland were among the states with the highest median household income in 2024. In terms of income by race and ethnicity, the average income of Asian households was highest, at over 120,000 U.S. dollars, while the median income among Black households was around half of that figure. What is the U.S. poverty threshold? The U.S. Census Bureau annually updates the poverty threshold based on the income of various household types. As of 2023, the threshold for a single-person household was 15,480 U.S. dollars. For a family of four, the poverty line increased to 31,200 U.S. dollars. There were an estimated 38.9 million people living in poverty across the United States in 2024, which reflects a poverty rate of 10.6 percent.

We investigate wealth returns on an administrative panel containing the disaggregated balance sheets of Swedish residents. The expected return on household net wealth is strongly persistent, determined primarily by systematic risk, and increasing in net worth, exceeding the risk-free rate by the size of the equity premium for households in the top 0.01%. Idiosyncratic risk is transitory but generates substantial long-term dispersion in returns in top brackets. Systematic and idiosyncratic risk both drive the cross-sectional distribution of the geometric average return over a generation. Furthermore, wealth returns explain most of the historical increase in top wealth shares.

In 2023, nearly 1,700 billionaires had a total wealth between one to two billion U.S. dollars. A statistical test for sampling variability is not appropriate. The data for this geographic area cannot be displayed because the number of sample cases is too small.

TwitterThe income quintiles refer to the quintiles estimated at the Canada level and not at the provincial/territorial level. The Income quintiles are assigned based on the equalized household disposable income. This takes into account differences in household size and composition. The Oxford-modified equivalence scale is used; it assigns a value of 1 to the first adult, 0.5 to each additional person aged 14 and over, and 0.3 for all children under 14. Age groups refer to the age group of the major income earner. Life insurance and pensions include the value of all life insurance and employer pension plans, termination basis. Excludes public plans administered or sponsored by governments: Old Age Security (OAS) including the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) and the Spouse's Allowance (SPA), as well as the Canada and Quebec Pension Plans (CPP/QPP). Other financial assets include total currency and deposits, Canadian short-term paper, Canadian bonds and debentures, foreign investments in paper and bonds, mortgages, equity and investment funds, and other receivables. Other non-financial assets include consumer durables, machinery and equipment, and intellectual property products. Excludes accumulation of value of collectibles including coins, stamps and art work. Other liabilities include major credit cards and retail store cards, gasoline station cards, etc., vehicle loans, lines of credit, student loans, other loans from financial institutions and other money owed. The sum of the values for net worth and its components by province and region is less than the total for Canada as they exclude the territories. The coefficients of variation from Statistics Canada's Survey of Financial Security for 2012 and 2016, which serve as indicators of the accuracy of these estimates for net worth and its components, are available in the appendix to Distributions of Household Economic Accounts, estimates of asset, liability and net worth distributions, 2010 to 2019, technical methodology and quality report for the March 2020 release. Distribution of value" is the share of a wealth component (such as total assets) attributable to the various household characteristics (such as lowest income quintile)." TwitterThe small area model-based income estimates are the official estimates of average (mean) household income at the middle layer super output area (MSOA) level in England and Wales for 2011/12, 2013/14 and 2015/16.
For 2015-16 the figures are average annual income. For 2013/14 and 2011/12 the figures are average weekly income.
They are calculated using a model based method to produce the following four estimates of income using a combination of survey data from the Family Resources Survey, and previously published data from the 2011 Census and a number of administrative data sources. The four different measures of income are:
Total annual household income is the sum of the gross income of every member of the household plus any income from benefits such as Working Families Tax Credit.
Net annual household income is the sum of the net income of every member of the household. It is calculated using the same components as total income but income is net of:
Net annual household income before housing costs (equivalised) is composed of the same elements as net household weekly income but is subject to the OECD’s equivalisation scale.
Net annual household income after housing costs (equivalised) is composed of the same elements of net household weekly income but is subject to the following deductions prior to the OECD’s equivalisation scale being applied:
