    U.S. airlines' domestic market share

The passenger air transportation market is a thriving industry, taking individuals to locations around the globe. American Airlines was the second largest airline in the North America based on operating revenue, reaching nearly 50 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. Passenger airlines can face much scrutiny for their passenger satisfaction and comfort. A 2022 North American Airline Satisfaction Study by J.D. Power & Associates listed Southwest Airlines as the best long-haul, closely followed by low-cost carrier JetBlue Airways.

United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and Southwest Airlines are the top ranked airlines based on 2022 domestic market share. Delta operates out of Atlanta, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta’s hub, sees the most passenger traffic in the United States. Chicago-headquartered United Airlines is a subsidiary of United Continental Holdings. United has flights to 210 domestic destinations and 120 destinations internationally, the Denver International Airport in Colorado being its largest passenger hub with over 8.4 million passengers in 2021.

The number of flights performed globally by the airline industry has increased steadily since the early 2000s and reached 38.9 million in 2019. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of flights dropped to 18.3 million in 2020. The flight volume increased again in the following years and was forecasted to reach 38.7 million in 2024. The global airline industry The number of flights performed increased year-on-year continuously to transport both passengers and freight. The industry’s recent growth can be attributed to a combination of increasing living standards and decreasing costs of air travel. While North American and European airlines currently dominate in terms of both revenue and passengers flown, it is predicted that future growth will be highest in markets of Asia.

This table only lists airport markets where the origin or destination airport is an airport that has other commercial airports in the same city. Midway Airport (MDW) and O'Hare (ORD) are examples of this. All records are aggregated as directionless markets. The combination of Airport_1 and Airport_2 define the airport pair market. Description

This report contains tables and charts on the financial condition of the U.S. major airlines. All data presented in this financial and traffic review are derived from data reported to the U.S. Department of Transportation on Form 41 Schedules by Large Certificated Air Carriers.

The data are presented on both a carrier group and an individual carrier basis, but the primary focus is on the individual major carrier and its performance. Data are presented for the most recent quarterly period and the comparable quarter a year earlier and also on a 12-month ended basis as at the end of the five most recent quarters. In addition, data on changes over comparable periods 12-months earlier are presented. In the case of merged carriers, data for the carriers involved have been combined and presented under the name of the surviving carrier so that meaningful comparisons could be made for the most recent 18 quarters. Also, carriers can move between groupings (Majors and Nationals) based on the criteria listed below over time. Each report includes 18 quarters of data. In the instance where a carrier falls into both groupings during the 18 quarters, a carrier will appear in both reports. The data from the Majors report and the data from the Nationals report should not be combined without ensuring any duplications are removed.

Majors: Air carriers with annual operating revenues exceeding $1,000,000,000

    Description

Bi-Annual Data Exposition: Every other year, at the Joint Statistical Meetings, the Graphics Section and the Computing Section join in sponsoring a special Poster Session called The Data Exposition , but more commonly known as The Data Expo. All of the papers presented in this Poster Session are reports of analyses of a common data set provided for the occasion. In addition, all papers presented in the session are encouraged to report the use of graphical methods employed during the developme nt of their analysis and to use graphics to convey their findings. Airline on-time performance: Have you ever been stuck in an airport because your flight was delayed or cancelled and wondered if you could have predicted it if you'd had more data? This is your chance to find out. The data: The data consists of flight arrival and departure details for all commercial flights within the USA, from October 1987 to April 2008. This is a large dataset: there are nearly 120 million records in total, and takes up 1.6 gigabytes of space compressed and 12 gigab ytes when uncompressed. The data comes originally from RITA where it is described in detail. You can download the data there, or from the bzipped csv files listed below. These files have derivable variables removed, are packaged in yearly chunks and have been more heavily compressed than the originals.
