    Description

    This dataset is derived from the Whoʻs Who of American Returned Students 遊美同學錄 [Youmei Tongxue Lu] published in Peking [Beijing] in 1917, compiled by the Returned Students’ Information Bureau (Liumei xuesheng tongxunchu 留美學生通訊處) established at Tsinghua School in 1915. This book is crucial for documenting the early liumei's experiences during the transitional period between the late Qing dynasty and the early years of the Republic (1911-). The dataset records all the institutions to which the students were affiliated in the course of their lives, including the educational institutions in which they studied in China, the United States, and other countries; the public or private organizations in which they were employed; as well as their memberships in clubs and associations. The names of organizations were retrieved automatically from the Chinese biographies using named entity recognition (SpaCy model), then manually cleaned, classified, and validated by the author. The attached file contains three tabs for (1) the list of affiliations (data); (2) the classification of organizations (class), and (3) the description of variables (key). The dataset records a total of 2,883 affiliations, linking 401 unique individuals to 1,344 unique institutions, distributed as followed: category n education 565 association 271 administration 132 business 110 facility 92 media 66 government 49 factory 30 other 22 military 7

    Measurement technique
    The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the two variables, namely (a) population and (b) population as a percentage of the total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages.     About this dataset

    Context

    The dataset tabulates the China population distribution across 18 age groups. It lists the population in each age group along with the percentage population relative of the total population for China. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of China by age. For example, using this dataset, we can identify the largest age group in China.

    Key observations

    The largest age group in China, TX was for the group of age 15 to 19 years years with a population of 102 (11.43%), according to the ACS 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. At the same time, the smallest age group in China, TX was the 80 to 84 years years with a population of 11 (1.23%).     This table presents the bilingual typology of academic disciplines used in the Modern China Biographical Database. It is based mainly on the typology created by Yuan T'ung-li in his three bibliographical volumes about the doctoral dissertations by Chinese students in the United States, the United Kingdom, and continental Europe. We adapted this typology to include other disciplines that were present in historical sources.

    There are three levels:

    - Level 2: name of the academic discipline in English and in Chinese

    - Level 1: first level of classification and clustering of academic disciplines in English and in Chinese

    Challenging visions of the U.S. national security “Establishment” as either hamstrung by ideological homogeneity bordering on groupthink, or riven by irreconcilable party political divisions, we deploy Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) to uncover empirically the structure of the China segment of the U.S. national security community. MCA—a form of geometric data analysis—finds latent structures in categorical datasets. Using an original dataset of organizations with a strong presence on China issues, we show that the China organizational field is far from homogenous, but is split less between Left and right than over degree of political engagement, separating older think tanks and cultural organizations from business-focused research and consulting firms, and academic/research institutions from outside politically-oriented groups located primarily within the Beltway. We explore our findings using the Trump and Obama administrations’ choice of locations to give speeches and remarks on U.S-China relations.

    The dataset tabulates the data for the China, TX population pyramid, which represents the China population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2018-2022 5-Year Estimates.     This dataset includes the data for Pew Research Center’s Global Attitudes Spring 2024 survey. This dataset is based on surveys conducted in 35 countries on six continents. The data draws on nationally representative surveys of 41,503 adults conducted from Jan. 5 to May 22, 2024. All surveys were conducted over the phone with adults in Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. Surveys were conducted face-to-face in Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ghana, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, the Philippines, Poland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tunisia and Turkey. In Australia, we used a mixed-mode, probability-based online panel. Description

This dataset is derived from the Whoʻs Who of American Returned Students 遊美同學錄 [Youmei Tongxue Lu] published in Peking [Beijing] in 1917, compiled by the Returned Students’ Information Bureau (Liumei xuesheng tongxunchu 留美學生通訊處) established at Tsinghua School in 1915. This book is crucial for documenting the early liumei's experiences during the transitional period between the late Qing dynasty and the early years of the Republic (1911-). The dataset records all the institutions to which the students were affiliated in the course of their lives, including the educational institutions in which they studied in China, the United States, and other countries; the public or private organizations in which they were employed; as well as their memberships in clubs and associations. The names of organizations were retrieved automatically from the Chinese biographies using named entity recognition (SpaCy model), then manually cleaned, classified, and validated by the author. The attached file contains three tabs for (1) the list of affiliations (data); (2) the classification of organizations (class), and (3) the description of variables (key). The dataset records a total of 2,883 affiliations, linking 401 unique individuals to 1,344 unique institutions, distributed as followed: category n education 565 association 271 administration 132 business 110 facility 92 media 66 government 49 factory 30 other 22 military 7
