    Description

    Overview

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has supplied Statistics Canada with administrative data on all international travelers entering into Canada since the 1920s. As part of the Frontier Counts program, the CBSA has collected data concerning the count of entries into the country by international travelers at Canadian ports of entry, and provided it to Statistics Canada for processing and analysis. The data is used by a number of organizations in the public and private sectors, to produce data on commerce and tourism between Canada and other countries.

    Source

Statistics Canada has made the data publicly available on their website here, under the Statistics Canada Open License.

    Data

The Dataset is divided after 14 csv files according to the geographical region that the traveler visited. There are files for all of Canada's 10 provinces, 3 territories and one the entire country. Each csv file has the same structure.

The n.o.s. acronym in the Country of residence column stands for 'not otherwise specified' and it includes persons reported from the same continent. For example, 'Africa, n.o.s.' includes the visitors from 'Africa', who did not report a more specific country or region. The acronym stopped being used after 1989.

    Description

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) Border Crossing Data provide summary statistics for inbound crossings at the U.S.-Canada and the U.S.-Mexico border at the port level. Data are available for trucks, trains, containers, buses, personal vehicles, passengers, and pedestrians. Border crossing data are collected at ports of entry by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The data reflect the number of vehicles, containers, passengers or pedestrians entering the United States.

This dataset provides a rich source of structured information that can be analyzed to uncover patterns, trends, and correlations in border crossing activities. The geographic coordinates allow for spatial analysis, such as mapping the distribution of crossings or integrating with other geographical datasets to study regional economic impacts, environmental effects, or the efficiency of border infrastructure.

From a data science perspective, several analyses could be performed with this dataset:

    • Trend Analysis: By examining the "Value" field over time, data scientists can identify trends in border crossings for different types of vehicles or pedestrians. This could reveal whether certain types of crossings are becoming more or less frequent, which could be indicative of broader economic or social trends.
    • Spatial Analysis: Using the latitude and longitude information, the dataset allows for detailed geographic analyses, such as identifying which states or regions see the most cross-border traffic or how traffic patterns change along the border.
    • Comparative Analysis: By comparing the different measures of crossings (e.g., Trucks vs. Personal Vehicles), researchers can draw insights into the nature of cross-border movements.

    Description

When people from around the world apply for a visitor visa, study or work permit, or permanent residence, they need to give their fingerprints and a photo, known as biometrics.

Just recently, the Government of Canada (GC) made it easier for foreign nationals to provide biometrics when applying from within Canada to extend or renew their visitor visa or work or study permit.

What happens after people give their biometrics? How does the data get stored and shared among the different GC departments that play a role in this process?

That’s where Shared Services Canada (SSC) comes in. We support the underlying information technology (IT) infrastructure needed for the GC to manage biometric data. IT infrastructure is the blend of hardware, software, networks, facilities, resources and equipment needed to deliver, manage and secure IT services.

    Description

The North American Roads dataset was compiled on October 27, 2020 from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) and is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)/Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) National Transportation Atlas Database (NTAD). This dataset contains geospatial information regarding major roadways in North America. On March 31, 2025, the errant records with a value of 2 in the "NHS" field were corrected to have a value of 7 (Other NHS). The data set covers the 48 contiguous United States plus the District of Columbia, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. The nominal scale of the data set is 1:100,000. The data within the North American Roads layer is a compilation of data from Natural Resources Canada, USDOT’s Federal Highway Administration, and the Mexican Transportation Institute. North American Roads is a digital single-line representation of major roads and highways for Canada, the United States, and Mexico with consistent definitions by road class, jurisdiction, lane counts, speed limits and surface type.

This item is scheduled to be Retired and removed from ArcGIS Online on July 30th, 2025. We encourage you to switch to using the item on the new organization as soon as possible to avoid any disruptions within your workflows. Land cover information is necessary for a large range of environmental applications related to climate impacts and adaption, emergency response, wildlife habitat, etc. In Canada, a 2008 user survey indicated that the most practical land cover data is provided in a nationwide 30 m spatial resolution format, with an update frequency of five years. In response to this need, the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has generated a 30 m land cover map of Canada for the base year 2010, as well as this 2015 land cover map. This land cover dataset is also the Canadian contribution to the 30 m spatial resolution 2015 Land Cover Map of North America, which is produced by Mexican, American and Canadian government institutions under a collaboration called the North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS). This land cover dataset for Canada is produced using observation from Operational Land Imager (OLI) Landsat sensor. An accuracy assessment based on 806 randomly distributed samples shows that land cover data produced with this new approach has achieved 79.90% accuracy with no marked spatial disparities.
