This dataset has been developed by the Australian Government as an authoritative source of indigenous location names across Australia. It is sponsored by the Spatial Policy Branch within the Department of Communications and managed solely by the Department of Human Services.
The dataset is designed to support the accurate positioning, consistent reporting, and effective delivery of Australian Government programs and services to indigenous locations.
The dataset contains Preferred and Alternate names for indigenous locations where Australian Government programs and services have been, are being, or may be provided. The Preferred name will always default to a State or Territory jurisdiction's gazetted name so the term 'preferred' does not infer that this is the locally known name for the location. Similarly, locational details are aligned, where possible, with those published in State and Territory registers.
This dataset is NOT a complete listing of all locations at which indigenous people reside. Town and city names are not included in the dataset. The dataset contains names that represent indigenous communities, outstations, defined indigenous areas within a town or city or locations where services have been provided.

This dataset presents information from G07 – Indigenous status by age by sex in Australia based on the general community profile from the 2021 Census. It contains characteristics of persons, families, and dwellings by Local Government Areas (LGA), 2021, from the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) Edition 3.
This dataset is part of a set of web services based on the 2021 Census. It can be used as a tool for researching, planning, and analysis. The data is based on place of usual residence (that is, where people usually live, rather than where they were counted on Census night), unless otherwise stated.
Small random adjustments have been made to all cell values to protect the confidentiality of respondents. These adjustments may cause the sum of rows or columns to differ by small amounts from table totals. November 2020 - Please note this dataset has been re-released to exclude Conservation Covenant data for Victoria. The Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database (CAPAD) 2018 provides both spatial and textual information about government, Indigenous and privately protected areas for Australia, in both the marine and terrestrial environments. This dataset is for terrestrial data only. State, Territory and the large NGO conservation agencies supplied data current for 30 June 2018. This is the eleventh version of the terrestrial database, with previous versions released in 1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.The Department also publishes protected areas data for the marine environment. "CAPAD 2018 - Marine" contains spatial and text information about offshore protected areas, for both State and Commonwealth waters. Previous versions of CAPAD marine information have been published in 1997, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.CAPAD provides a snapshot of protected areas that meet the IUCN definition of a protected area: "A protected area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values." (IUCN Definition 2008).The department publishes a summary of the CAPAD data biennially on its website at https://www.dcceew.gov.au/environment/land/nrs/science/capad.CAPAD 2018 is available for use through the CC-BY 4.0 licencing model. The main attributes of Terrestrial CAPAD 2018 are described below. For more information please refer to the CAPAD Technical Specification document.CAPAD 2018 Attributes:PA_ID: A unique code for the protected area that should persist between versions of CAPAD. In most cases this number will be generated by the DoEE, and is generally based on the RES_NUMBER provided by the data custodian.PA_PID: A unique code for a parcel or zone within a protected area that should persist between versions of CAPAD. For example, a protected area with two zones share the same PA_ID and are assigned PA_PID values of PA_ID_a and PA_ID_b. If a protected area does not have multiple parts/zones then the PA_PID is by default the same as the PA_ID.NAME: The official (gazetted) name of a protected area. Gazetted PAs with no name are flagged as "Unnamed" with a reserve number. e.g. Unnamed HA1207.TYPE: The type of protected area according to the establishment mechanism. eg. The land has been assessed as a protected area that meets the standard for inclusion in the NRS.I = an interim protected area. The land has been assessed to meet the standard for inclusion in the NRS but has not been formally established as a protected area although binding agreements are in place for formal protection to occur in the future.N = No. The land has been assessed not to meet the standard for inclusion in the NRS but is managed for nature conservation without meeting the NRS standard.ND = Not determined. The land is probably managed for nature conservation that has not been assessed to determine if it meets the standard for inclusion in the NRS.Note that for the calculation of area statistics only protected areas with an NRS_PA value of 'Y' or 'I' are included.GAZ_AREA: The area in hectares as described in the nomination document (e.g. parliamentary gazettal), to the nearest hectare. Some protected areas do not have a specific area in the designation.GIS_AREA: The area (in hectares) of a protected area based on current spatial data calculated in the Albers Equal Area projection by DoEE using GIS software. This field is used to calculate the statistics provided in spreadsheets at: www.environment.gov.au/capad/GAZ_DATE: Gazettal date of the original proclamation that established any form of protected area.LATEST_GAZ: the date of the most recent gazettal or proclamation to add land to the protected area. . It can be the same as the GAZ_DATE if there have been no changes or additions to the protected area.STATE: The code for the state or territory that the protected area is located in. This dataset presents data on population and people available from the ABS Data by Region statistics. This release of Data by Region presents various data for 2011-2019 and Census of Population and Housing data for 2011 and 2016 and is based on the Statistical Area 4 (SA4) 2016 boundaries. The dataset includes information in the following specified areas of population and people: Estimated Resident Population, Working Age Population, Median Age, Births and Deaths, Population Density, Internal and Overseas Migration, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Overseas Born Proportion, Religious Affiliation and Speaks language other than English.
Data by Region contains a standard set of data for each region type, depending on the availability of statistics for particular geographies. Data are sourced from a wide variety of collections, both ABS and non-ABS. When analysing these statistics, care needs to be taken as time periods, definitions, methodologies, scope and coverage can differ across collections. Where available, data have been presented as a time series - to enable users to assess changes over time. However, when looked at on a period to period basis, some series may sometimes appear volatile. When analysing the data, users are encouraged to consider the longer term behaviour of the series, where this extra information is available.
For more information please visit the Explanatory Notes.
AURIN has made the following changes to the original data:
Spatially enabled the original data with the ABS Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) SA4 2016 dataset.
Some data values in Data by Region have been randomly adjusted or suppressed to avoid the release of confidential details.
Where data was not available, not available for publication, nil or rounded to zero in the original data, it has been set to null.
Columns and rows that did not contain any values in the original data have been removed.

ObjectiveHigh rates of dementia are evident in First Nations populations, and modifiable risk factors may be contributing to this increased risk. This study aimed to use a longitudinal dataset to gain insights into the long-term risk and protective factors for dementia and cognitive impairment not dementia (CIND) in a Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal population in Far North Queensland, Australia.Study Design and SettingProbabilistic data linkage was used to combine baseline health check data obtained in 1998/2000 and 2006/2007 for 64 residents in remote communities with their results on a single dementia assessment 10–20 years later (2015–2018). The relationship between earlier measures and later CIND/dementia status was examined using generalized linear modeling with risk ratios (RRs). Due to the small sample size, bootstrapping was used to inform variable selection during multivariable modeling.ResultsOne third of participants (n = 21, 32.8%) were diagnosed with dementia (n = 6) or CIND (n = 15) at follow-up. Secondary school or further education (RR = 0.38, 95% CI 0.19–0.76, p = 0.006) and adequate levels of self-reported physical activity (RR = 0.26, 95% CI 0.13–0.52, p < 0.001) were repeatedly selected in bootstrapping and showed some evidence of protection against later CIND/dementia in final multivariate models, although these had moderate collinearity. Vascular risk measures showed inconclusive or unexpected associations with later CIND/dementia risk.ConclusionsThe preliminary findings from this small study highlighted two potential protective factors for dementia that may be present in this population. A tentative risk profile for later CIND/dementia risk is suggested, although the small sample size limits the applicability of these findings.

This dataset and its metadata statement were supplied to the Bioregional Assessment Programme by a third party and are presented here as originally supplied.
This dataset details the declared Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA) across South Australia through the implementation of the Indigenous Protected Areas Programme. The IPA Programme is part of the National Reserve System (NRS) Programme which aims to establish a network of protected areas which include a representative sample of all types of ecosystems across the country. Through this program, Indigenous landowners are being supported to manage their lands for the protection of natural and cultural features in accordance with internationally recognised standards and guidelines for the benefit of all Australians. The IPA Programme and NRS Programme are part of the Australian Government's Natural Heritage Trust. More information can be found from the following website; http://www.deh.gov.au/indigenous/ipa
This dataset can be used to show the locations of Indigenous Protected Areas for conservation purposes.
Through the IPA Programme, as new declarations are made ERIN has continued to produce spatial boundaries of all IPA's. In 2006 ERIN updated the IPA datasets to comply with the Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database (CAPAD) as IPA's are included in CAPAD. This included modification of the spatial data to remove discrepancies as well as an attribute review for accuracy and completeness. This was undertaken through expert advice from the IPA Programme staff. Yalata, Mt Willoughby and Nantawarrina Protected Areas are based on the DCDB. The others are unknown.

This dataset presents the social and economic indicators for the indigenous population of Australia based on the 2016 Census and aggregated following the 2016 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). The data has been provided by The National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling (NATSEM) and includes the following indicators: age, sex, employment, education level, occupation, school attendance, language, household relationships, family types, household tenure type, household income, motor vehicles and household family composition. All indicators were extracted from the ABS Tablebuilder system using the usual residence profile. For usual residence data, the ABS moves people back to where they live, rather than using the location the data were collected (place of enumeration). Usual residence data is preferred for individual level data because it removes the effect of respondents travelling or holidaying. All rates were calculated as a proportion of all Indigenous people in the area, excluding any Not Stated or Overseas Visitors. Therefore, summing the rates across all categories for an indicator will give a total of 100%. For more information please view the NATSEM Technical Report. Please note: AURIN has spatially enabled the original data provided directly from NATSEM. Where data values are NULL, the data is either unpublished or not applicable mathematically.

The Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database (CAPAD) 2018 provides both spatial and textual information about government, Indigenous and privately protected areas for Australia, in both the marine and terrestrial environments. This dataset is the marine component of the CAPAD only. Marine CAPAD provides information about off-shore protected areas in both state and Commonwealth waters. State and Territory conservation agencies supplied data current to 30 June 2018. This is the ninth version of the marine database, with previous versions released in 1997, 2002, 2004, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.The Department also publishes protected areas data for the terrestrial environment. The terrestrial component of the database has been previously released in 1997, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016.CAPAD provides a snapshot of protected areas that meet the IUCN definition of a protected area: "A protected area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values." (IUCN Definition 2008).The department publishes a summary of the CAPAD data biennially on its website at https://www.dcceew.gov.au/environment/land/nrs/science/capad.CAPAD 2018 is available for use through the CC-BY 4.0 licencing model. The main attributes of Marine CAPAD 2018 are described below. Joint management arrangements are recognised by a management board, agreement (e.g. ILUA) or other formal arrangement.P = Private - Private protected areas where land and resource owners hold decision-making authority, responsibility and accountability.COMMENTS: Extra information jurisdictions elect to supply. Due to the change in ENVIRON based categorisation rules in the 2016/2018 versions of CAPAD, it has been noted in the COMMENTS field of marine CAPAD if a record was previously included in terrestrial CAPAD.ENVIRON: The code denotes the environment type conserved in the protected area as described by the data custodian. A protected area can assigned an ENVIRON value of terrestrial, marine or both.T = Terrestrial - Generally includes land and or water above high water mark including aquatic ecosystems.B = Both - Includes land and water both above and below the high water mark.M = Marine - Generally includes land and or water below high water mark and may include islands and reefs above high water mark.Terrestrial CAPAD contains 'T' and 'B' protected areas. Marine CAPAD contains 'M' and 'B' protected areas. If a protected area is coded as 'B' by the data provider, DoEE calculates the proportional representation of marine and terrestrial areas within the protected area (all component polygons combined). If 70% or more of the protected area is marine then the whole protected area is included in the marine CAPAD dataset. If less than 70% protected area is marine then the whole protected area is included in the terrestrial CAPAD dataset.Prior to CAPAD 2016 only ENVIRON ='M' records were included in Marine CAPAD, all ENVIRON = 'T' or 'B' records were included in Terrestrial CAPAD. The method described above for managing ENVIRON = 'B' areas was introduced in CAPAD 2016 (and revised slightly in CAPAD 2018).MGT_PLAN: The CODE for the status of the management plan for the protected
