Area type

Census 2021 statistics are published for a number of different geographies. These can be large, for example the whole of England, or small, for example an output area (OA), the lowest level of geography for which statistics are produced.

For higher levels of geography, more detailed statistics can be produced. When a lower level of geography is used, such as output areas (which have a minimum of 100 persons), the statistics produced have less detail. This is to protect the confidentiality of people and ensure that individuals or their characteristics cannot be identified.

Lower tier local authorities

Lower tier local authorities provide a range of local services. There are 309 lower tier local authorities in England made up of 181 non-metropolitan districts, 59 unitary authorities, 36 metropolitan districts and 33 London boroughs (including City of London). In Wales there are 22 local authorities made up of 22 unitary authorities.

Household composition

Households according to the relationships between members.

One-family households are classified by:

• the number of dependent children
• family type (married, civil partnership or cohabiting couple family, or lone parent family)

Other households are classified by:

• the number of people
• the number of dependent children
• whether the household consists only of students or only of people aged 66 and over

Data about household relationships might not always look consistent with legal partnership status. This is because of complexity of living arrangements and the way people interpreted these questions. Take care when using these two variables together.

This dataset provides Census 2021 estimates for the number of households in Northern Ireland by the number of cars or vans available and by the average number of cars or vans per household. The estimates are as at census day, 21 March 2021.

The census collected information on the usually resident population of Northern Ireland on census day (21 March 2021). Initial contact letters or questionnaire packs were delivered to every household and communal establishment, and residents were asked to complete online or return the questionnaire with information as correct on census day. Special arrangements were made to enumerate special groups such as students, members of the Travellers Community, HM Forces personnel etc. The Census Coverage Survey (an independent doorstep survey) followed between 12 May and 29 June 2021 and was used to adjust the census counts for under-enumeration.

Data are available for Northern Ireland and the 11 Local Government Districts.

Whole house or bungalow:

This property type is not divided into flats or other living accommodation. There are three types of whole houses or bungalows.

Detached:

None of the living accommodation is attached to another property but can be attached to a garage.

Semi-detached:

The living accommodation is joined to another house or bungalow by a common wall that they share.

Terraced:

A mid-terraced house is located between two other houses and shares two common walls. An end-of-terrace house is part of a terraced development but only shares one common wall.

Flats (Apartments) and maisonettes:

An apartment is another word for a flat. A maisonette is a 2-storey flat.

The number of people in a household aged 17 years and over.

In 2023, some 455,300 new electric cars were registered in the United Kingdom. This was a year-over-year increase of 23.8 percent compared to 2022 and over double the sales recorded in 2020. Overall, electric vehicle sales have steadily grown since 2015. A growing electric vehicle market and fleet Electric vehicles have been gaining market share in the United Kingdom. Since 2021, battery-electric vehicles overtook diesel vehicles and have been the second most popular fuel type in the country through 2022. The South East was the region of England with the largest electric car market, at around 80,600 new registrations in 2022, followed by the North West and South West. This increase in sales translates to a sharp rise in the UK electric vehicle fleet, which surpassed one million units in 2022. Most of the vehicles in the electric car parc were battery-electric. Charging infrastructure and its challenges While the UK electric car fleet is steadily growing, the public charging infrastructure has also been on the rise. By July 2023, there were over 44,000 publicly available charging points in the United Kingdom. However, most of these chargers were alternating current chargers, which were typically slower than their direct current counterparts. Accessibility is also one of the leading hurdles for the UK charging network. Most public charging points were destination charging, typically located at the end of a driver's journey in areas such as retail car parks or education areas, and were not open around the clock, which presents challenges in how electric vehicle owners can recharge their vehicles without turning to private home charging.

These files provide detailed road safety data about the circumstances of personal injury road accidents in GB from 1979, the types of vehicles involved and the consequential casualties. The statistics relate only to personal injury accidents on public roads that are reported to the police, and subsequently recorded, using the STATS19 accident reporting form.

There has been an increasing demand for more up to date information on reported road accidents to be made available to the public, stakeholders and researchers. As a result, the Department for Transport made a dataset covering accidents for the first and second quarters of 2018 in Great Britain available for the first time on data.gov.uk. The data released was an un-validated subset and has been superseded by the full accident dataset for 2018, released after validation for the full year.

All the data variables are coded rather than containing textual strings. The lookup tables are available in the "Additional resources" section towards the bottom of the table.

Please note that the 2015 data were revised on the 29th September 2016. Accident, Vehicle and Casualty data for 2005 - 2009 are available in the time series files under 2014. Data for 1979 - 2004 are available as a single download under 2004 below.

Also includes: Results of breath-test screening data from recently introduced digital breath testing devices, as provided by Police Authorities in England and Wales Results of blood alcohol levels (milligrams / 100 millilitres of blood) provided by matching coroners’ data (provided by Coroners in England and Wales and by Procurators Fiscal in Scotland) with fatality data from the STATS19 police data of road accidents in Great Britain. For cases when the Blood Alcohol Levels for a fatality are "unknown" are a consequence of an unsuccessful match between the two data sets.
