This table contains data on the percentage of the total population living below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), and the percentage of children living below 200% FPL for California, its regions, counties, cities, towns, public use microdata areas, and census tracts. Data for time periods 2011-2015 (overall poverty) and 2012-2016 (child poverty) and with race/ethnicity stratification is included in the table. The poverty rate table is part of a series of indicators in the Healthy Communities Data and Indicators Project of the Office of Health Equity. This report includes data on the number of applications requested or restored and cases added during the month. This dataset is a selected subset of the entire report, available on the California Department of Social Services, Research and Data Reports (RADR) website at http://www.cdss.ca.gov/research/. CalWORKs is a welfare program that gives cash aid and services to eligible needy California families. The program serves all 58 counties in the state and is operated locally by county welfare departments. If a family has little or no cash and needs housing, food, utilities, clothing or medical care, they may be eligible to receive immediate short-term help. Families that apply and qualify for ongoing assistance receive benefits each month to help pay for housing, food and other necessary expenses. Monthly CalWORKs data is collected from the counties through submission of the CA 237CW CalWORKs Cash Grant Movement Report, which is used to report statistical information on CalWORKs caseload movement for Two Parent Families, Zero Parent Families, All Other Families, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Timed-Out Cases and Safety Net/Fleeing Felon/Long-Term Sanction Cases (SN/FF/LTS). Data includes: board and school information, grade 3 and 6 EQAO student achievements for reading, writing and mathematics, and grade 9 mathematics EQAO and OSSLT. Data excludes private schools, Education and Community Partnership Programs (ECPP), summer, night and continuing education schools.
How Are We Protecting Privacy?
Results for OnSIS and Statistics Canada variables are suppressed based on school population size to better protect student privacy. In order to achieve this additional level of protection, the Ministry has used a methodology that randomly rounds a percentage either up or down depending on school enrolment. In order to protect privacy, the ministry does not publicly report on data when there are fewer than 10 individuals represented.

This dataset includes the monthly count of individuals under age 19 receiving full scope Medi-Cal benefits as authorized by California Welfare and Institutions Code 14007.8. The count reflects the total number eligible during the month. California provides full scope Medi-Cal benefits to all children under the age of 19 regardless of immigration status. This program is referred to as SB 75 and was implemented May 16, 2016 pursuant to SB 75 (Chapter 18, Statutes of 2015), Section 14007.8 and added to the Welfare and Institutions Code and amended by SB 4 (Chapter 709, Statutes of 2015).

This table contains data on the number of licensed day care center slots (facility capacity) per 1,000 children aged 0-5 years in California, its regions, counties, cities, towns, and census tracts. The table contains 2015 data, and includes type of facility (day care center or infant center). Access to child care has become a critical support for working families. Many working families find high-quality child care unaffordable, and the increasing cost of child care can be crippling for low-income families and single parents. These barriers can impact parental choices of child care. Increased availability of child care facilities can positively impact families by providing more choices of child care in terms of price and quality. Estimates for this indicator are provided for the total population, and are not available by race/ethnicity. The licensed day care centers table is part of a series of indicators in the Healthy Communities Data and Indicators Project (HCI) of the Office of Health Equity. These data are from the 2013 California Dietary Practices Surveys (CDPS), 2012 California Teen Eating, Exercise and Nutrition Survey (CalTEENS), and 2013 California Children’s Healthy Eating and Exercise Practices Surveys (CalCHEEPS). These surveys have been discontinued. Adults, adolescents, and children (with parental assistance) were asked for their current height and weight, from which, body mass index (BMI) was calculated. For adults, a BMI of 30.0 and above is considered obese. For adolescents and children, obesity is defined as having a BMI at or above the 95th percentile, according to CDC growth charts.
The California Dietary Practices Surveys (CDPS), the California Teen Eating, Exercise and Nutrition Survey (CalTEENS), and the California Children’s Healthy Eating and Exercise Practices Surveys (CalCHEEPS) (now discontinued) were the most extensive dietary and physical activity assessments of adults 18 years and older, adolescents 12 to 17, and children 6 to 11, respectively, in the state of California. CDPS and CalCHEEPS were administered biennially in odd years up through 2013 and CalTEENS was administered biennially in even years through 2014. The surveys were designed to monitor dietary trends, especially fruit and vegetable consumption, among Californias for evaluating their progress toward meeting the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Healthy People 2020 Objectives. All three surveys were conducted via telephone. Adult and adolescent data were collected using a list of participating CalFresh households and random digit dial, and child data were collected using only the list of CalFresh households. Older children (9-11) were the primary respondents with some parental assistance. For younger children (6-8), the primary respondent was parents. Data were oversampled for low-income and African American to provide greater sensitivity for analyzing trends among the target population. Wording of the question used for these analyses varied by survey (age group). This dataset includes the total number of individuals enrolled in Medi-Cal by eligibility group: Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI), non-MAGI, and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The groups are defined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Performance Indicators (CMSPI) reporting requirements. The Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) submits eligibility and enrollment data regarding Medicaid and CHIP monthly to CMS. The enrollment data represents enrollment totals as of 60 days after the eligibility month (indicated as “Reporting Period” in the dataset). CMS publishes the state total enrollments on the CMSPI website. The total enrollment comprises of individuals who are eligible for full scope Medi-Cal by MAGI – Child, MAGI – Adult, Non-MAGI Child, Non-MAGI Adult, and CHIP eligibility groups. DHCS does not report to CMS the total enrollment in limited scope Medi-Cal or state-only funded programs (indicated as the “Non-CMSPI” in the dataset).
