    Description

    The right to fair wages and working conditions extends to trades workers employed on construction sites under federal contracts, and is guaranteed under the Fair Wages and Hours of Labour Act and Regulations. Whenever contractors bid on federal construction projects, they must agree to meet the conditions defined in this Act and pay the wages established by the Labour Program in support of the Act and its regulations. The Fair Wages and Hours of Labour Act and Regulations ensure that all workers, tradespeople and subcontractors employed on federal government construction contracts benefit from fair wages and working conditions. Contractors must post a copy of the labour conditions prominently in the workplace, and keep records that demonstrate these conditions are being met, should they be requested by a Labour Program inspector. Note: The Fair Wages and Hours of Labour Act and Regulations were repealed on January 1, 2014. All federal construction contracts that contain a fair wage clause will continue to be governed by provisions of the Act and Regulations for the duration of that contract.

    This dataset includes six tables which were custom ordered from Statistics Canada. All tables include commuting characteristics (mode of commuting, duration/distance), labour characteristics (employment income groups in 2015, Industry by the North American Industry Classification System 2012), and visible minority groups. The dataset is in Beyond 20/20 (.ivt) format. The Beyond 20/20 browser is required in order to open it.     Description

    The numbers reflect incidents that were reported to and tracked by the Ministry of Labour. They exclude death from natural causes, death of non- workers at a workplace, suicides, death as a result of a criminal act or traffic accident (unless the OHSA is also implicated) and death from occupational exposures that occurred in the past.

    Data from the Ministry of Labour reflects Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Employment Standards (ES) information at a point in time and/or for specific reporting purposes. As a result, the information above may not align with other data sources.

    Notes on critical injuries :

    For the purposes of the data provided, a critical injury of a serious nature includes injuries that:

    1. "Place life in jeopardy"
    2. "Produce unconsciousness"
    3. "Result in substantial loss of blood"
    4. "Involve the fracture of a leg or arm but not a finger or toe"
    5. "Involve the amputation of a leg, arm, hand or foot but not a finger or toe"
    6. "Consist of burns to a major portion of the body"
    7. "Cause the loss of sight

    Only critical injury events reported to the ministry are included here. This represents data that was reported to the ministry and may not represent what actually occurred at the workplace. The critical injury numbers represent critical injuries reported to the ministry and not necessarily critical injuries as defined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Non- workers who are critically injured may also be included in the ministry's data. Critical injuries data is presented by calendar year to be consistent with Workplace Safety and Insurance Board harmonized data;

    Individual data for the Health Care program is available for Jan. 1 to Mar. 31, 2011 only. From April 2011 onwards Health Care data is included in the Industrial Health and Safety numbers.

    Notes on Fatalities :

    Only events reported to the ministry are included here. The ministry tracks and reports fatalities at workplaces covered by the OHSA. This excludes death from natural causes, death of non-workers at a workplace, suicides, death as a result of a criminal act or traffic accident (unless the OHSA is also implicated) and death from occupational exposures that occurred many years ago. Fatalities data is presented by calendar year to be consistent with Workplace Safety and Insurance Board harmonized data. Fatality data is reported by year of event.

    The Labour Force Survey (LFS) is a household survey carried out monthly by Statistics Canada. Since its inception in 1945, the objectives of the LFS have been to divide the working-age population into three mutually exclusive classifications - employed, unemployed, and not in the labour force - and to provide descriptive and explanatory data on each of these categories. Data from the survey provide information on major labour market trends such as shifts in employment across industrial sectors, hours worked, labour force participation and unemployment rates, employment including the self-employed, full and part-time employment, and unemployment. It publishes monthly standard labour market indicators such as the unemployment rate, the employment rate and the participation rate. The LFS is a major source of information on the personal characteristics of the working-age population, including age, sex, marital status, educational attainment, and family characteristics. Employment estimates include detailed breakdowns by demographic characteristics, industry and occupation,job tenure, and usual and actual hours worked. This dataset is designed to provide the user with historical information from the Labour Force Survey. The tables included are monthly and annual, with some dating back to 1976. Most tables are available by province as well as nationally. Demographic, industry, occupation and other indicators are presented in tables derived from the LFS data. The information generated by the survey has expanded considerably over the years with a major redesign of the survey content in 1976 and again in 1997, and provides a rich and detailed picture of the Canadian labour market. Some changes to the Labour Force Survey (LFS) were introduced which affect data back to 1987. There are three reasons for this revision: The revision enables the use of improved population benchmarks in the LFS estimation process. These improved benchmarks provide better information on the number of non-permanent residents. There are changes to the data for the public and private sectors from 1987 to 1999. In the past, the data on the public and private sectors for this period were based on an old definition of the public sector. The revised data better reflects the current public sector definition, and therefore result in a longer time series for analysis. The geographic coding of several small Census Agglomerations (CA) has been updated historically from 1996 urban centre boundaries to 2001 CA boundaries. This affects data from January 1987 to December 2004. It is important to note that the changes to almost all estimates are very minor, with the exception of the public sector series and some associated industries from 1987 to 1999. Rates of unemployment, employment and participation are essentially unchanged, as are all key labour mark et trends.     The dataset contains prevention and inspection intervention files created from January 1 to December 31. The Commission on Standards, Equity, Health and Safety at Work (CNESST) focuses on the management of prevention by employers and workers and on the establishment or construction site of a prevention program or action plan. To carry out its mission, the CNESST carries out interventions in workplaces. The assignment of files to the inspector takes into account the organization's guidelines and prevention-inspection priorities. During their intervention, the inspector identifies the dangers and risks related to their mandate. After each intervention, the inspector records the results of the intervention in a report. For more information concerning the inspector's visit, his rights and the results of a visit, consult the CNESST website. In order to ensure respect for privacy and the protection of personal information, prevention and inspection intervention files are listed using an anonymous digital identifier, created for the data set.

Thanks for your participation! # # The dataset contains prevention and inspection intervention files created from January 1 to December 31. The Commission on Standards, Equity, Health and Safety at Work (CNESST) focuses on the management of prevention by employers and workers and on the establishment or construction site of a prevention program or action plan. To carry out its mission, the CNESST carries out interventions in workplaces. The assignment of files to the inspector takes into account the organization's guidelines and prevention-inspection priorities. During their intervention, the inspector identifies the dangers and risks related to their mandate. After each intervention, the inspector records the results of the intervention in a report. For more information concerning the inspector's visit, his rights and the results of a visit, consult the CNESST website. In order to ensure respect for privacy and the protection of personal information, prevention and inspection intervention files are listed using an anonymous digital identifier, created for the data set.
