    This information covers fires, false alarms and other incidents attended by fire crews, and the statistics include the numbers of incidents, fires, fatalities and casualties as well as information on response times to fires. The Home Office also collect information on the workforce, fire prevention work, health and safety and firefighter pensions. All data tables on fire statistics are below.

    The Home Office has responsibility for fire services in England. The vast majority of data tables produced by the Home Office are for England but some (0101, 0103, 0201, 0501, 1401) tables are for Great Britain split by nation. In the past the Department for Communities and Local Government (who previously had responsibility for fire services in England) produced data tables for Great Britain and at times the UK.     Description

    The Public Health Research Database (PHRD) is a linked asset which currently includes Census 2011 data; Mortality Data; Hospital Episode Statistics (HES); GP Extraction Service (GPES) Data for Pandemic Planning and Research data. Researchers may apply for these datasets individually or any combination of the current 4 datasets.

    The purpose of this dataset is to enable analysis of deaths involving COVID-19 by multiple factors such as ethnicity, religion, disability and known comorbidities as well as age, sex, socioeconomic and marital status at subnational levels. 2011 Census data for usual residents of England and Wales, who were not known to have died by 1 January 2020, linked to death registrations for deaths registered between 1 January 2020 and 8 March 2021 on NHS number. The data exclude individuals who entered the UK in the year before the Census took place (due to their high propensity to have left the UK prior to the study period), and those over 100 years of age at the time of the Census, even if their death was not linked. The dataset contains all individuals who died (any cause) during the study period, and a 5% simple random sample of those still alive at the end of the study period. For usual residents of England, the dataset also contains comorbidity flags derived from linked Hospital Episode Statistics data from April 2017 to December 2019 and GP Extraction Service Data from 2015-2019.

    Data are supplied to ONS by the Local Registration Service, in partnership with the General Register Office (GRO). Coding for cause of death is carried out according to the World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) and internationally agreed rules, allowing for international comparisons. Deaths registered in England and Wales to those usually resident outside of England and Wales are included. Deaths registered outside of England and Wales to those usually resident in England and Wales are excluded.

    Description

    These are the final statistics on road collisions and casualties for Great Britain in 2021.

    The number of reported road casualties in 2021 continued to be impacted by the national restrictions following the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, including a period of lockdown between January and March. Casualty numbers increased compared to 2020, which was also affected by the pandemic, but remained lower than the pre-pandemic levels. Overall, casualties have broadly followed trends in traffic in recent years.

    These statistics show that in 2021 there were:

    • an estimated 1,558 reported road deaths, a decrease of 11% from pre-pandemic levels (2019)

    • an estimated 27,450 killed or seriously injured (KSI) casualties, 11% below the 2019 level

    • an estimated 128,209 casualties of all severities, 16% below the 2019 level

    The Death Registrations in England and Wales, 1993-2022: Secure Access study includes annual data files for all deaths registered in England and Wales from 1993 to 2022. Death registration is a legal requirement under the Births and Deaths Registration Act 1836. The registration of deaths occurring in England and Wales is a service carried out by the Local Registration Service in partnership with the General Register Office (GRO). Information collected at death registration is recorded on the Registration Online (RON) system by registrars. The information supplied at the time of registration is from 1 of 4 sources:
    1. details supplied by the doctor when certifying a death
    2. details supplied by the informant to the registrar
    3. details supplied by a coroner to the registrar following an investigation
    4. details derived from the information supplied above
    Death registration data are passed to the Office for National Statistics electronically from GRO for statistical purposes. Each annual dataset is a static file of death registration records available at the time the annual subset was closed. Revisions to records can still be made after the subset has been finalised but these will not be reflected in the annual dataset or used to compile statistics. The annual datasets include deaths that have been registered in that calendar year, a small percentage of these deaths may have occurred in previous years (2.9% in 2001 and 4.8% in 2015). Deaths to those usually resident in England or Wales who die abroad are not included in the dataset. Deaths registered in England and Wales to those whose usual residence is outside England and Wales are included.

    This project relied entirely on freely-available international statistical data that has already been quality checked by reputable organisations prior to being released to the public. We drew on three types of source. First, international datasets such as National Healthcare Workforce Accounts (NHWA, WHO), human health and social work sector labour force data (ISIC Q, ILO), WHO's Covid-19 dashboard, and estimates of excess deaths produced by various academics and research organisations (e.g. Johns Hopkins Center for Systems Science and Engineering). Second, best-available national statistical surveys (e.g. Annual Population Survey, UK Office for National Statistics) were used where data needed was not available in international datasets. Third, in the absence of a reported value from an extant dataset, we imputed missing data using best models. This latter method was used to calculate the proportion of foreign-born health workers among health workforces.
    Description

    The dataset consists of quantitative data derived mainly from international datasets (ILO, WHO), supplemented by data from national datasets and modelled data to complete missing values. It shows the statistical data we collated and used to calculate estimates of Covid-19 deaths among migrant health care workers and includes details on how missing information was imputed. It includes spreadsheet estimates for India, Nigeria, Mexico, and the UK for excess and reported Covid-19 deaths amongst foreign-born workers and for all workers in the human health and social work sector and in three specific health occupations: doctors, nurses, and midwives. For each group the spreadsheets provide a basic estimate and an age-sex standardised estimate.

    This project aims to give proper attention to the place of migrant workers in health care systems during the Covid-19 pandemic. Migrant workers are of substantial and growing significance in many countries' health and care systems and are key to realising the global goal of universal health care, so it is vital that we understand much better how Covid-19 is impacting on them.

    The project's overarching research questions are, in the relation to Covid-19, what risks do migrant health care workers experience, what are the pressures on resilient and sustainable health care workforces, and how are stakeholders responding to these risks and pressures?

    We develop a research method to estimate Covid-19 migrant health care worker mortality rates and trial the method, undertaking statistical analysis and modelling using quantitative data drawn from WHO and OECD data and other demographic and bio-statistical data as available.

    In addition to strengthening the methodological techniques and empirical evidence base on the risks of Covid-19 infection and death among migrant health care workers our project also tracks, through documentary analysis, collective responses to such risks and challenges to sustainable health workforces for universal health coverage.

    This project is attuned to the urgent need for high quality data and for 'real world' solutions-focused Covid-19 research forged from collaboration. We are focused on the immediate application of proof-of concept findings to a rapidly-evolving global health crisis.

    This indicator is designed to accompany the SHMI publication. The SHMI includes all deaths reported of patients who were admitted to non-specialist acute trusts in England and either died while in hospital or within 30 days of discharge. Deaths related to COVID-19 are excluded from the SHMI. A contextual indicator on the percentage of deaths reported in the SHMI which occurred in hospital and the percentage which occurred outside of hospital is produced to support the interpretation of the SHMI. Notes: 1. As of the July 2020 publication, COVID-19 activity has been excluded from the SHMI. The SHMI is not designed for this type of pandemic activity and the statistical modelling used to calculate the SHMI may not be as robust if such activity were included. Activity that is being coded as COVID-19, and therefore excluded, is monitored in the contextual indicator 'Percentage of provider spells with COVID-19 coding' which is part of this publication. 2. Please note that there was a fall in the overall number of spells for England from March 2020 due to COVID-19 impacting on activity for England and the number has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. Further information at Trust level is available in the contextual indicator ‘Provider spells compared to the pre-pandemic period’ which is part of this publication. 3. There is a shortfall in the number of records for Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RDU) and Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RA2). Values for these trusts are based on incomplete data and should therefore be interpreted with caution. 4. A number of trusts are currently engaging in a pilot to submit Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) data to the Emergency Care Data Set (ECDS), rather than the Admitted Patient Care (APC) dataset. As the SHMI is calculated using APC data, this does have the potential to impact on the SHMI value for these trusts. Trusts with SDEC activity removed from the APC data have generally seen an increase in the SHMI value. This is because the observed number of deaths remains approximately the same as the mortality rate for this cohort is very low; secondly, the expected number of deaths decreases because a large number of spells are removed, all of which would have had a small, non-zero risk of mortality contributing to the expected number of deaths. We are working to better understand the planned changes to the recording of SDEC activity and the potential impact on the SHMI. The trusts affected in this publication are: Barts Health NHS Trust (trust code R1H), Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RGT), Croydon Health Services NHS Trust (trust code RJ6), Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust (trust code RVR), Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RDU), Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (trust code RYJ), Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (trust code R0A), Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RM1), and University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RTG). 5. Update 9 March 2023: Following the merger of NHS Digital and NHS England on 1st February 2023 we have updated the branding of our documentation. While we go through this process, the organisational information on the publication data excel documents currently remains as NHS Digital.     These indicators are designed to accompany the SHMI publication. The SHMI methodology does not make any adjustment for patients who are recorded as receiving palliative care. This is because there is considerable variation between trusts in the way that palliative care is recorded. Contextual indicators on the percentage of provider spells and deaths reported in the SHMI where palliative care was recorded at either treatment or specialty level are produced to support the interpretation of the SHMI. Notes: 1. As of the July 2020 publication, COVID-19 activity has been excluded from the SHMI. The SHMI is not designed for this type of pandemic activity and the statistical modelling used to calculate the SHMI may not be as robust if such activity were included. Activity that is being coded as COVID-19, and therefore excluded, is monitored in the contextual indicator 'Percentage of provider spells with COVID-19 coding' which is part of this publication. 2. Please note that there was a fall in the overall number of spells for England from March 2020 due to COVID-19 impacting on activity and the number has not returned to pre-pandemic levels. Further information at Trust level is available in the contextual indicator ‘Provider spells compared to the pre-pandemic period’ which is part of this publication. 3. There is a shortfall in the number of records for Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RDU) and South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RTR). Values for these trusts are based on incomplete data and should therefore be interpreted with caution. 4. A number of trusts are currently engaging in a pilot to submit Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) data to the Emergency Care Data Set (ECDS), rather than the Admitted Patient Care (APC) dataset. As the SHMI is calculated using APC data, this does have the potential to impact on the SHMI value for these trusts. Trusts with SDEC activity removed from the APC data have generally seen an increase in the SHMI value. This is because the observed number of deaths remains approximately the same as the mortality rate for this cohort is very low; secondly, the expected number of deaths decreases because a large number of spells are removed, all of which would have had a small, non-zero risk of mortality contributing to the expected number of deaths. We are working to better understand the planned changes to the recording of SDEC activity and the potential impact on the SHMI. The trusts affected in this publication are: Barts Health NHS Trust (trust code R1H), Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RGT), Croydon Health Services NHS Trust (trust code RJ6), Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust (trust code RVR), Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RDU), Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (trust code RYJ), Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (trust code R0A), Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RM1), and University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RTG). 5. On 1 April 2023 Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RA4) was acquired by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RH5). However, as we received notification of this change after data processing for this publication began, data for Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust have not been included in the SHMI values for Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. The next publication in this series will reflect the updated organisation structure. 6.     We examined the Office of National Statistics Longitudinal Study (LS) (Shelton et al., 2019; Hattersley & Creeser, 1995), a long-term cohort study comprised of people living in England and Wales under selection criteria of one of four annual birthdates (representing a random sample of approximately 1% of the population clustered by dateof birth). All census variables from the 1971 census through to the most recent 2011 census are directly linked to cohort members via unique identifiers, and additional variables are also derived via individual linkage, including administrative data such as births and deaths. We included LS members enumerated at the 2011 census (the most recent census to have taken place) and linked to mortality data to includedeaths in the 12-month period subsequent to the census (i.e.01-Apr-2011 to 31-Mar-2012). Age, sex, and data relating to occupation and educational qualifications for 2001 and 2011 censuses were extracted and used to categorise LS members according to three dimensions of individual-level socio-economic circumstances: occupation, education, and wage.
    Description

    These data contain lifetables derived from the ONS Longitudinal study dataset, and according to age, sex and individual socio-economic status measured with education, occupation or wage in England and Wales in 2011. Life table according to age, sex and individual’s education, or occupation or wage for the England & Wales population in 2011 The data contained in these files are aggregated data from the ONS Longitudinal Study (ONS LS). The ONS LS is a long-term census-based multi-cohort study. It uses four annual birthdates as random selection criteria, giving a 1% sample of the England and Wales population (10.1093/ije/dyy243). The initial sample was drawn from the 1971 Census, and study members’ census records have been linked every 10 years up to the 2011 Census. New members enter the study through birth or immigration, and existing members leave through death or emigration. Vital life events information (births, deaths and cancer registrations) are also linked to sample members’ records.     In the UK, people who reside within more income-deprived areas live a shorter period of time after a diagnosis of cancer compared to people living in less income-deprived areas. At least part of these inequalities in cancer survival are due to inequalities in cancer care, even considering differential patient and tumour factors such as stage at diagnosis. The specific mechanisms by which area-based deprivation levels lead to poorer individual health outcomes within the context of a universal healthcare system, free at the point of use, are not well understood. These analyses will enable, for the first time, the examination of how an individual patient's socio-economic status is associated with poorer cancer survival in England, and will demonstrate how these associations might be modified by the level of deprivation in the small area within which the patient resides. Our aim is to perform an in-depth study of the association between the individual patient's deprivation and cancer survival, considering in particular how this is influenced by their socio-economic context, whether it varies over time since diagnosis and whether it has changed over calendar time. We will focus on three indicators of deprivation: income, education and occupation. We will first examine the correlation between individual and area deprivation, by each of these indicators, and then secondly describe the association between individual deprivation and survival. Third, we will assess whether the association between individual deprivation and patients' survival is modified by area deprivation; that is, whether equally deprived individuals in different areas fare better, or worse, according to the socio-economic context of the area within which they live. This is because adjusting for deprivation might create the impression that a higher death rate for those who are more deprived is acceptable. Patient records are assigned to 1 of 5 deprivation groups (called quintiles) using the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD). The deprivation quintile cannot be calculated for some records e.g. because the patient's postcode is unknown or they are not resident in England. Contextual indicators on the percentage of provider spells and deaths reported in the SHMI belonging to each deprivation quintile are produced to support the interpretation of the SHMI. Notes: 1.
