    This Public Schools feature dataset is composed of all Public elementary and secondary education facilities in the United States as defined by the Common Core of Data (CCD, https://nces.ed.gov/ccd/ ), National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, https://nces.ed.gov ), US Department of Education for the 2017-2018 school year. This includes all Kindergarten through 12th grade schools as tracked by the Common Core of Data. Included in this dataset are military schools in US territories and referenced in the city field with an APO or FPO address. DOD schools represented in the NCES data that are outside of the United States or US territories have been omitted. This feature class contains all MEDS/MEDS+ as approved by NGA. Complete field and attribute information is available in the ”Entities and Attributes” metadata section. Geographical coverage is depicted in the thumbnail above and detailed in the Place Keyword section of the metadata. This release includes the addition of 3065 new records, modifications to the spatial location and/or attribution of 99,287 records, and removal of 2996 records not present in the NCES CCD data.

    Description

    The National Center for Education Statistics’ (NCES) Education Demographic and Geographic Estimate (EDGE) program develops annually updated school district boundary composite files that include public elementary, secondary, and unified school district boundaries clipped to the U.S. shoreline. School districts are special-purpose governments and administrative units designed by state and local officials to provide public education for local residents. District boundaries are collected for NCES by the U.S. Census Bureau to develop demographic estimates and to support educational research and program administration. The NCES Common Core of Data (CCD) program is an annual collection of basic administrative characteristics for all public schools, school districts, and state education agencies in the United States. These characteristics are reported by state education officials and include directory information, number of students, number of teachers, grade span, and other conditions. The administrative attributes in this layer were developed from the most current CCD collection available. This includes all prekindergarten through 12th grade schools as tracked by the PSS. This feature class contains all MEDS/MEDS+ as approved by NGA. Complete field and attribute information is available in the ”Entities and Attributes” metadata section. Geographical coverage is depicted in the thumbnail above and detailed in the Place Keyword section of the metadata. This release includes the addition of 2675 new records, modifications to the spatial location and/or attribution of 19836 records, the removal of 254 records no longer applicable. Additionally, 10,870 records were removed that previously had a STATUS value of 2 (Unknown; not represented in the most recent PSS data) and duplicate records identified by ORNL.

    This dataset represents public schools composed of all public elementary and secondary education in the United States as defined by the Common Core of Data, National Center for Education Statistics, US Department of Education. This includes all kindergarten through 12th grade schools as tracked by the Common Core of Data. Included in this dataset are the military schools abroad and referenced in the city field with an APO or FPO address. Also referenced in the state field with the abbreviation AE. Please note that the APO and FPO school points are located at 0,0. This feature class contains all MEDS/MEDS+ as approved by NGA. For each field the 'Not Available' and 'NULL' designations are used to indicate that the data for the particular record and field is currently unavailable and will be populated when and if that data becomes available.

    The Condition of America's Public School Facilities, 1999 (FRSS 73), is a study that is part of the Fast Response Survey System (FRSS) program; program data is available since 1998-99 at . FRSS 73 (https://nces.ed.gov/surveys/frss/) is a cross-sectional survey that collects and report data on key issues at public elementary and secondary schools in the United States. The sample for FRSS 73 included approximately 1000 public elementary, middle, and high schools. District personnel who were familiar with the condition of schools completed questionnaires for each sampled school in their districts. The study's weighted response rate was 91 percent. Key statistics produced from FRSS 73 provide information on the pervasiveness of air conditioning, the number of temporary classrooms, the number of days particular public schools were closed for repairs, planned construction, repairs, and additions, long range facilities plans, the age of public schools, overcrowding and practices used to address overcrowding, estimated costs for bringing facilities to a satisfactory condition, and the overall condition of roofs, floors, walls, plumbing, heating, electric facilities, and safety features.

    This comprehensive layer of California public school districts combines all elementary, secondary and unified district area boundaries into a single file and serves as the authoritative geographic data source for all school district area boundaries in California for the 2018-19 academic year. School districts are single purpose governmental units that operate schools and provide public educational services to residents within geographically defined areas. Agencies considered school districts that do not use geographically defined service areas to determine enrollment are excluded from this data set. In order to view districts represented as point locations, please see the "California School District Offices" layer. The school districts in this layer are enriched with additional district-level attribute information from the California Department of Education's data collections. These data elements add meaningful statistical and descriptive information that can be visualized and analyzed on a map and used to advance education research or inform decision making.School districts are categorized as either elementary (primary), high (secondary) or unified based on the general grade range of the schools operated by the district.     Description

    School enrollment data are used to assess the socioeconomic condition of school-age children. Government agencies also require these data for funding allocations and program planning and implementation.

    Data on school enrollment and grade or level attending were derived from answers to Question 10 in the 2015 American Community Survey (ACS). People were classified as enrolled in school if they were attending a public or private school or college at any time during the 3 months prior to the time of interview. The question included instructions to “include only nursery or preschool, kindergarten, elementary school, home school, and schooling which leads to a high school diploma, or a college degree.” Respondents who did not answer the enrollment question were assigned the enrollment status and type of school of a person with the same age, sex, race, and Hispanic or Latino origin whose residence was in the same or nearby area.

    School enrollment is only recorded if the schooling advances a person toward an elementary school certificate, a high school diploma, or a college, university, or professional school (such as law or medicine) degree. Tutoring or correspondence schools are included if credit can be obtained from a public or private school or college. People enrolled in “vocational, technical, or business school” such as post secondary vocational, trade, hospital school, and on job training were not reported as enrolled in school. Field interviewers were instructed to classify individuals who were home schooled as enrolled in private school. The guide sent out with the mail questionnaire includes instructions for how to classify home schoolers.

    Enrolled in Public and Private School – Includes people who attended school in the reference period and indicated they were enrolled by marking one of the questionnaire categories for “public school, public college,” or “private school, private college, home school.” The instruction guide defines a public school as “any school or college controlled and supported primarily by a local, county, state, or federal government.” Private schools are defined as schools supported and controlled primarily by religious organizations or other private groups. Home schools are defined as “parental-guided education outside of public or private school for grades 1-12.” Respondents who marked both the “public” and “private” boxes are edited to the first entry, “public.”

    Grade in Which Enrolled – From 1999-2007, in the ACS, people reported to be enrolled in “public school, public college” or “private school, private college” were classified by grade or level according to responses to Question 10b, “What grade or level was this person attending?” Seven levels were identified: “nursery school, preschool;” “kindergarten;” elementary “grade 1 to grade 4” or “grade 5 to grade 8;” high school “grade 9 to grade 12;” “college undergraduate years (freshman to senior);” and “graduate or professional school (for example: medical, dental, or law school).”

    In 2008, the school enrollment questions had several changes. “Home school” was explicitly included in the “private school, private college” category. For question 10b the categories changed to the following “Nursery school, preschool,” “Kindergarten,” “Grade 1 through grade 12,” “College undergraduate years (freshman to senior),” “Graduate or professional school beyond a bachelor’s degree (for example: MA or PhD program, or medical or law school).” The survey question allowed a write-in for the grades enrolled from 1-12.

    Question/Concept History – Since 1999, the ACS enrollment status question (Question 10a) refers to “regular school or college,” while the 1996-1998 ACS did not restrict reporting to “regular” school, and contained an additional category for the “vocational, technical or business school.” The 1996-1998 ACS used the educational attainment question to estimate level of enrollment for those reported to be enrolled in school, and had a single year write-in for the attainment of grades 1 through 11. Grade levels estimated using the attainment question were not consistent with other estimates, so a new question specifically asking grade or level of enrollment was added starting with the 1999 ACS questionnaire.

    Limitation of the Data – Beginning in 2006, the population universe in the ACS includes people living in group quarters. Data users may see slight differences in levels of school enrollment in any given geographic area due to the inclusion of this population. The extent of this difference, if any, depends on the type of group quarters present and whether the group quarters population makes up a large proportion of the total population. For example, in areas that are home to several colleges and universities, the percent of individuals 18 to 24 who were enrolled in college or graduate school would increase, as people living in college dormitories are now included in the universe.

    Description

    This dataset displays public elementary and secondary schools throughout the country that are either single-sex schools or offer single-sex classes for the 2008-2009 school year. For the 2008-2009 school year, there are at least 392 public schools in the United States offering single-sex educational opportunities. Most of those schools are COED schools which offer single-sex CLASSROOMS, but which retain at least some coed activities. In some cases, the only coed activities are lunch and one or two electives, so the distinction between a single-sex school, and a coed school with single-sex classrooms, can become a semantic quibble. From March 2002 through July 2007, we tried to make a distinction between single-sex schools, on the one hand, and coed schools with single-sex classes, on the other hand. We listed single-sex schools on one web page, while coed schools with single-sex classes were listed on a separate web page. As it became increasingly obvious that the distinction was often arbitrary, we decided in August 2007 to begin listing all public schools offering single-sex classrooms on the same web page, which is this page. By our count, 97 of the 392 schools below qualify as single-sex schools, meaning that students attending any of those 97 schools have all their school activities -- including lunch and all electives -- in a setting which is all-boys or all-girls. Most of those 97 schools are single-sex campuses, such as the The Ann Richards School for Young Women which opened in Austin, Texas in August 2007. Note: Schools which offer single-sex classes only in physical education and/or health and/or sex education are NOT listed here. In addition, correctional schools for adjudicated delinquent juveniles are not listed here.

    The 1997-98 Private School Universe Survey (PSS 1997-98) is a study that is part of the Private School Universe program; program data is available since 1989-1990 at https://nces.ed.gov/surveys/pss/pssdata.asp. PSS 1997-98 (https://nces.ed.gov/surveys/pss/) is a cross-sectional survey that collects data on private elementary and secondary schools, including religious orientation, level of school, length of school year, length of school day, total enrollment, race/ethnicity of students, number of high school graduates, number of teachers employed, program emphasis, and existence and type of kindergarten program. The study was conducted using mail questionnaires and telephone follow-up of all private schools in the United States. The PSS includes both schools with a religious orientation (e.g., Catholic, Lutheran, or Jewish) and nonsectarian schools with programs ranging from regular to special emphasis and special education. Key statistics produced from PSS 1997-98 are on the number of religiously affiliated schools, the number of private high school graduates, and the number of private school students and teachers.

    This layer serves as the authoritative geographic data source for all school district area boundaries in California. School districts are single purpose governmental units that operate schools and provide public educational services to residents within geographically defined areas. Agencies considered school districts that do not use geographically defined service areas to determine enrollment are excluded from this data set. In order to view districts represented as point locations, please see the "California School District Offices" layer. The school districts in this layer are enriched with additional district-level attribute information from the California Department of Education's data collections. These data elements add meaningful statistical and descriptive information that can be visualized and analyzed on a map and used to advance education research or inform decision making.

    School districts are categorized as either elementary (primary), high (secondary) or unified based on the general grade range of the schools operated by the district. Elementary school districts provide education to the lower grade/age levels and the high school districts provide education to the upper grade/age levels while unified school districts provide education to all grade/age levels in their service areas. Boundaries for the elementary, high and unified school district layers are combined into a single file. The resulting composite layer includes areas of overlapping boundaries since elementary and high school districts each serve a different grade range of students within the same territory. The 'DistrictType' field can be used to filter and display districts separately by type.

    Boundary lines are maintained by the California Department of Education (CDE) and are effective in the 2022-23 academic year . The CDE works collaboratively with the US Census Bureau to update and maintain boundary information as part of the federal School District Review Program (SDRP). The Census Bureau uses these school district boundaries to develop annual estimates of children in poverty to help the U.S. Department of Education determine the annual allocation of Title I funding to states and school districts. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) also uses the school district boundaries to develop a broad collection of district-level demographic estimates from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS).

    The school district enrollment and demographic information are based on student enrollment counts collected on Fall Census Day (first Wednesday in October) in the 2022-23 academic year. These data elements are collected by the CDE through the California Longitudinal Achievement System (CALPADS) and can be accessed as publicly downloadable files from the Data & Statistics web page on the CDE website https://www.cde.ca.gov/ds">https://www.cde.ca.gov/ds.

    The Fast Response Survey System (FRSS) was established in 1975 by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), United States Department of Education. FRSS is designed to collect issue-oriented data within a relatively short time frame. FRSS collects data from state education agencies, local education agencies, public and private elementary and secondary schools, public school teachers, and public libraries. To ensure minimal burden on respondents, the surveys are generally limited to three pages of questions, with a response burden of about 30 minutes per respondent. Sample sizes are relatively small (usually about 1,000 to 1,500 respondents per survey) so that data collection can be completed quickly. Reported data are weighted to produce national estimates of the sampled education sector. The sample size permits limited breakouts by classification variables. However, as the number of categories within the classification variables increases, the sample size within categories decreases, which results in larger sampling errors for the breakouts by classification variables. The Teachers' Use of Educational Technology in U.S. Public Schools, 2009 survey provides national estimates on the availability and use of educational technology among teachers in public elementary and secondary schools during 2009. This is one of a set of three surveys (at the district, school, and teacher levels) that collected data on a range of educational technology resources. A stratified multistage sample design was used to select teachers for this study. Data collection was conducted September 2008 through July 2009, and 3,159 eligible teachers completed the survey by web, mail, fax, or telephone. The survey asked respondents to report information on the use of computers and Internet access in the classroom; availability and use of computing devices, software, and school or district networks (including remote access) by teachers; students' use of educational technology; teachers' preparation to use educational technology for instruction; and technology-related professional development activities. Respondents reported quantities for the following: computers located in the classroom every day, computers that can be brought into the classroom, and computers with Internet access. Data on the availability and frequency of using computers and other technology devices during instructional time were also collected. Respondents reported on students' use of educational technology resources during classes and teachers' use of modes of technology to communicate with parents and students. Additional survey topics included teacher training and preparation to effectively use educational technology for instruction, and teachers' opinions related to statements about their participation in professional development for educational technology. Respondents were also asked for administrative information such as school instructional level, school enrollment size, main teaching assignment, and years of experience.

This Public Schools feature dataset is composed of all Public elementary and secondary education facilities in the United States as defined by the Common Core of Data (CCD, https://nces.ed.gov/ccd/ ), National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, https://nces.ed.gov ), US Department of Education for the 2017-2018 school year. This includes all Kindergarten through 12th grade schools as tracked by the Common Core of Data. Included in this dataset are military schools in US territories and referenced in the city field with an APO or FPO address. DOD schools represented in the NCES data that are outside of the United States or US territories have been omitted. This feature class contains all MEDS/MEDS+ as approved by NGA. Complete field and attribute information is available in the ”Entities and Attributes” metadata section. Geographical coverage is depicted in the thumbnail above and detailed in the Place Keyword section of the metadata. This release includes the addition of 3065 new records, modifications to the spatial location and/or attribution of 99,287 records, and removal of 2996 records not present in the NCES CCD data.
