The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program is a Federal-State cooperative effort in which monthly surveys are conducted to provide estimates of employment, hours, and earnings based on payroll records of business establishments. The CES survey is based on approximately 119,000 businesses and government agencies representing approximately 629,000 individual worksites throughout the United States. CES data reflect the number of nonfarm, payroll jobs. It includes the total number of persons on establishment payrolls, employed full- or part-time, who received pay (whether they worked or not) for any part of the pay period that includes the 12th day of the month. Temporary and intermittent employees are included, as are any employees who are on paid sick leave or on paid holiday. Persons on the payroll of more than one establishment are counted in each establishment. CES data excludes proprietors, self-employed, unpaid family or volunteer workers, farm workers, and household workers. Government employment covers only civilian employees; it excludes uniformed members of the armed services. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor is responsible for the concepts, definitions, technical procedures, validation, and publication of the estimates that State workforce agencies prepare under agreement with BLS.

For example, for 2012-2016, there were approximately 320,110 Service employees in Connecticut, 14.6% of those employees worked in Government. 'Self-Employed, Incorporated' includes workers in their own incorporated businesses, 'Self-Employed, Not Incorporated' includes workers in their own non-incorporated businesses and unpaid family workers, 'Government' includes local, state, and federal government workers, 'Private, Profit' includes employees of for-profit private companies, 'Private, Not-for-profit' includes both wage and salary employees of not-for-profit private companies. The 2020 Public Service Employee Survey (PSES) was administered by Advanis, on behalf of the Office of the Chief Human Resources Officer, Treasury Board of Canada. This comprehensive survey measured federal government employees’ opinions about their engagement, leadership, workforce, workplace, workplace well-being, compensation, diversity and inclusion, and the impacts of COVID-19. The 2020 Public Service Employee Survey was conducted from November 30, 2020 to January 29, 2021. A total of 188,786 employees in 87 federal departments and agencies responded to the 2020 Public Service Employee Survey, for a response rate of 61%. The 2020 Public Service Employee Survey datasets contain the results of the survey by year (2020, 2019 and 2018) for the Public Service and departments/agencies, and the results broken down by demographic characteristics (e.g., age, gender) and organizational units. Results for 2019 and 2018 are only provided for questions repeated in the 2020 Public Service Employee Survey.

The CES survey is a federal-state cooperative endeavor in which states develop state and sub-state data using concepts, definitions, and technical procedures prescribed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Estimates produced by the CES program include both full- and part-time jobs. Excluded are self-employment, as well as agricultural and domestic positions. In Connecticut, more than 4,000 employers are surveyed each month to determine the number of the jobs in the State. Students are reported as those who were planned and routed, but may or may not have used the service provided. Student stop assignment is done at the school, OPT creates the routes. Routes were determined by those routed with students assigned Vehicles are identified by school bus company reported data. This data is subject to data entry error and is dependent on the school bus companies to maintain. All transportation sites were included, and reported by type. A transportation site was defined by a unique location identified by a street address. Please note multiple students or schools can be located in the same address and would there for represent multiple stops at the same site.

This dataset contains estimated fiscal year-end headcount information for full-time and full-time equivalent employees (FTE). The information is summarized by agency, personnel type and funding. The amount fields are whole numbers. The numbers within can be summarized to match pages from the publication “Full-Time and Full-Time Equivalent Staffing Levels”. This dataset is updated four times per year after publication of the First Quarter, Preliminary, Executive and Adopted Financial Plan, usually in November, January, April and June respectively.

Employment by Industry reports the total Number of Employers, the Annual Average Employment, and the Annual Average Wage by industry at the town, county, and state level. Industries included in this dataset vary from location to location. In as many locations as possible, five specific industry segments are consistently present (Construction, Manufacturing, Retail Trade, All Industries, Total Government) as well as the largest 3 out of the remaining segments for that location, ranked by Annual Average Employment. Not every location has data for every segment, and some may not have data for the five consistently reported segments. This data is from the Connecticut Department of Labor Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW). The program produces a comprehensive tabulation of employment and wage information for workers covered by Connecticut Unemployment Insurance (UI) laws and Federal workers covered by the Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees (UCFE) program.

This dataset details data on hours worked by public transportation employees, head counts of employees and wage rates for each applicable agency reporting to the National Transit Database in the 2022 and 2023 report years at the agency level.

Please note: FTA updated this file November 15, 2023 to improve the calculation of Average Wage Rate. Previously, this total included Capital Labor Hours in the denominator. These hours are now omitted from the calculation given that the cost of capital projects do not appear in the numerator.

The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program (also known as ES-202) collects employment and wage data from employers covered by New York State's Unemployment Insurance (UI) Law. This program is a cooperative program with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. QCEW data encompass approximately 97 percent of New York's nonfarm employment, providing a virtual census of employees and their wages as well as the most complete universe of employment and wage data, by industry, at the State, regional and county levels. "Covered" employment refers broadly to both private-sector employees as well as state, county, and municipal government employees insured under the New York State Unemployment Insurance (UI) Act. Federal employees are insured under separate laws, but are considered covered for the purposes of the program. Employee categories not covered by UI include some agricultural workers, railroad workers, private household workers, student workers, the self-employed, and unpaid family workers. QCEW data are similar to monthly Current Employment Statistics (CES) data in that they reflect jobs by place of work; therefore, if a person holds two jobs, he or she is counted twice. However, since the QCEW program, by definition, only measures employment covered by unemployment insurance laws, its totals will not be the same as CES employment totals due to the employee categories excluded by UI.

The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) Program is a Federal-State cooperative program between the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the California EDD’s Labor Market Information Division (LMID). The QCEW program produces a comprehensive tabulation of employment and wage information for workers covered by California Unemployment Insurance (UI) laws and Federal workers covered by the Unemployment Compensation for Federal Employees (UCFE) program.

The QCEW program serves as a near census of monthly employment and quarterly wage information by 6-digit industry codes from the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) at the national, state, and county levels. At the national level, the QCEW program publishes employment and wage data for nearly every NAICS industry. At the state and local area level, the QCEW program publishes employment and wage data down to the 6-digit NAICS industry level, if disclosure restrictions are met. In accordance with the BLS policy, data provided to the Bureau in confidence are used only for specified statistical purposes and are not published. The BLS withholds publication of Unemployment Insurance law-covered employment and wage data for any industry level when necessary to protect the identity of cooperating employers.

Data from the QCEW program serve as an important input to many BLS programs. The Current Employment Statistics and the Occupational Employment Statistics programs use the QCEW data as the benchmark source for employment. The UI administrative records collected under the QCEW program serve as a sampling frame for the BLS establishment surveys.

In addition, the data serve as an input to other federal and state programs. The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) of the Department of Commerce uses the QCEW data as the base for developing the wage and salary component of personal income.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration (ETA) and California's EDD use the QCEW data to administer the Unemployment Insurance program. The QCEW data accurately reflect the extent of coverage of California’s UI laws and are used to measure UI revenues; national, state and local area employment; and total and UI taxable wage trends.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes new QCEW data in its County Employment and Wages news release on a quarterly basis. The BLS also publishes a subset of its quarterly data through the Create Customized Tables system, and full quarterly industry detail data at all geographic levels.
