    Description

Mesoscale boundaries have an important influence on mesoscale weather. They can trigger, enhance or inhibit convections and severe weather. They are also indicators of shifts in wind speed and direction, temperature and relative humidity, and can affect air quality and heat indices. Around the Great Lakes, it has been observed that mesoscale boundaries are prevalent and can have complex interactions between each other.

A mesoscale boundary is the interface between two air masses for weather phenomenon on a scale of 5km to 100km. Mesoscale boundaries are generally associated with wind and differences in temperature, pressure and relative humidity. During the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games periods, boundary information were collected from July 10 to August 15, 2015. These included lake and land breeze fronts, outflow boundaries, as well as merged and other boundaries.

Each mesoscale boundary is represented as a curve on the surface of the Earth with a list of coordinates. The data are stored in GeoJSON format and Shapefiles. A CSV file summarizes all the properties of the boundaries, but does not include any geometric information.

    Description

Four ground-based radiometers (ultraviolet radiation instruments) were deployed in the Greater Golden Horseshoe Area in support of the Games. They reported minute-by-minute observations of the ultraviolet (UV) component of sun exposure as defined by the Global Solar UV Index (UVI). The ultraviolet index or UV Index is an international standard measurement of the strength of sunburn-producing UV radiation at a particular place and time.

The readings from these sensors were used to inform the operational forecast program, particularly to provide data for validation of the UV index forecasts from the Environment and Climate Change Canada numerical modelling system.

All data in these datasets are essentially ‘raw’, having undergone only minimal automated Quality Control (QC). The user is referred to an additional Instrumentation Metadata XLS file posted with the Datasets that describes specific data issues that the users must be aware of before using the datasets.

    Description

The main radar covering the Toronto Area is the King City Doppler Dual-Polarization C-Band radar (43.96388, -79.57416). Other nearby radars include the Exeter Doppler C-Band radar (43.37027,-81.38416) and the Buffalo Doppler Dual-Polarization S-Band radar (42.94889,-78.73667) from the United States.

Though the primary radar for the project is the King City radar, the raw data from all three radars are included in their native format (IRIS or Nexrad Level 2) and are intended for radar specialists. The data is available from May 1 2015 to Sept 30 2015. The scan strategy for each radar is different, with at least 10 minute scan cycles or better. The user should consult with a radar specialist for more details.

Reflectivity and radial velocity images (presented as a pair) for the lowest elevation angle (0.5o) centred on a 128 km x 128 km box around from the King City radar are provided for general use. Besides their normal use as precipitation observations, they are particularly useful to identify Lake Breezes as weak linear reflectivity and as radial velocity discontinuity features for the entire period. The target providing the radar returns are insects. Analysis indicates the presence of Lake Breezes on 118 days, only 35 days did not have any kind of lake breeze-like features.

Daily movies have been created. The format of the single images is PNG and the movies is an animated GIF.

The data is organized by radar and by day in the following structure.

The raw data is organized in the following directory structure: RADAR ->

The images are organized as: RADAR -> QUICKLOOK -> YYYY -> YYYYMM -> YYYYMMDD; where YYYY is the year, MM is the month, DD is the day. The movies are located in the YYYYMMDD folders and are named as YYYYMMDD_movie.gif

    Description

The Pan and Parapan American Games are a regional international summer sporting event, staged every 4 years in the year prior to the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games. The 2015 Games were awarded to Canada on November 6, 2009, by the Pan American Sports Organization. The XVII Pan American Games and the V Parapan American Games were held in Toronto, Canada, from July 10–26, 2015, and from August 7–15, 2015, respectively. Canada welcomed the 40 other countries/nations of the Americas to Toronto and the municipalities of the Greater Golden Horseshoe Area in Ontario where the summer sports events of the 2015 Pan and Parapan American Games were hosted. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) mission and mandate for the TO2015 Games was to provide essential services for enhanced weather monitoring and forecasting and for local-level preparedness activities. The key objectives were to enhance public safety and decision making by: issuing weather warnings; forecasting weather conditions; supporting critical weather sensitive government services; and monitoring atmospheric conditions. The funding received by ECCC was used to provide state-of-the-art, 24/7, dedicated, venue-specific weather services during the Games (i.e., 24 hours per day, 7 days per week). Although ECCC’s mandate for the Games was to provide venue-specific forecasts and alerts, various ongoing research and development activities were aligned to take advantage of the unique opportunities provided by the Games. ECCC’s research showcase for the Games leveraged our state-of-the-art science and technologies. The goal was two-fold: support ECCC’s operations during the Games, and learn from the research and development to make a great meteorological service even better. ECCC showcased a number of new technologies and instruments, which are described in the following sections. The research instrument platforms provided observations that supplemented the automated land- and marine-based Mesonet. All available observations were used to increase our understanding of meteorological and air quality science, particularly over an urban environment. ECCC will use this new scientific information to improve the accuracy and lead time of its alerts.

    Description

Eligible community organizations may hold licensed gaming events to generate revenue that benefits programs and services they deliver. Class A licensed ticket raffles are those that are expected to generate gross revenue of more than $20,000. Net revenue is determined from revenue reports submitted after the gaming event has finished. Revenue information submitted after the cutoff date for a given fiscal year is not included in this report. Registered raffles: anticipated gross revenue is $250,000 or more. Major raffles: anticipated gross revenue is $100,000 or more, but less than $250,000. Minor raffles: anticipated gross revenue is more than $20,000 and less than $100,000. Gaming event licences are associated with government fiscal years based on their 'end date'.
