This dataset is a snapshot from October 2022 of all 48 homes in a section of a neighborhood nearby a large university in Central Florida. All of the homes are single family homes featuring a garage, a driveway, and a fenced-in backyard. Data was gathered by hand (keyboard) via a collection of sites, including Zillow, Realtor, Redfin, Trulia, and Orange County Property Appraiser. All homes were built in the same year in the early 2000's and feature central air and all other utilities typical of contemporary suburban homes in the United States. The area is close to a university and a large portion of renters are college students and young professionals, as well as families and older adults.

Note that while the dataset is exhaustive in that it has all of the houses, some homes are missing some columns, typically because a home did not feature a estimate on a site or the one home not found on the property appraiser's site. This also is therefore not a randomized dataset, so the only population of homes that it can be used to infer on are those within this specific portion of the neighborhood. Personally, I am going to use the dataset to practice a couple of aspects of real-world data: Cleaning, Imputing, and Exploratory Data Analysis. Mainly, I want to compare different approaches to filling in the missing values of the dataset, then do some Model Building with some additional Dimensionality Reduction.

"This new report is the culmination of an investigation the Senate Budget Committee launched last fall. Over the course of the probe, the Committee obtained national county-level non-renewal data from nearly two dozen companies that collectively account for about 65 percent of the national homeowners’ insurance market. The data cover 249 million total insurance policies over the six-year period beginning in 2018 and ending in 2023. While sky-rocketing insurance premiums have been well documented, comprehensive non-renewal data of this scope and magnitude has never been publicly available—until now."
From the report: "The Committee ultimately obtained national, county-level non-renewal data from 23 of the 41 companies from which it requested this data. The data cover the years 2018 through 2023, and the companies responding collectively account for approximately 65 percent of the homeowners’ insurance market nationwide. The data released with this Report demonstrate climate change beginning to upend insurance markets around the country."
I am uploading this data here in February 2025 out of an abundance of caution given that climate change related data is currently being scrubbed from U.S. federal websites. In addition, I created a CSV of the data that is in a more usable format, in my opinion. The CSV adds a column for the year instead of separating data on different worksheet tabs, making longitudinal analysis more difficult.
Note that the formatting of the data is still terrible. County data is duplicated in state totals. "AK" is not a U.S. county, it is the state of Alaska, and it is the sum of the next several rows, which are for its counties. If you sum a column, you receive double the "grand total" listed at the bottom due to this duplication. Without states to disambiguoate, counties/districts are not uniquely identified and there are many duplicate county names. One should be able to move states/territories out and use them to disambiguate counties.

To prevent homeowners from becoming homeless due to foreclosure, the City initiated the Residential Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention Program, an innovative program that links a Court of Common Pleas order requiring that homeowners facing foreclosure have an opportunity to meet with their lenders to negotiate an alternative to foreclosure with City-funded housing counseling, outreach, a hotline and legal assistance. Working together, the City and the Court have created and implemented a national model. - SaveYourHomePhilly Hotline - To help keep Philadelphians in their homes, the City supports a hotline that enables homeowners to seek assistance as soon as they begin to have mortgage problems. At the SaveYourHomePhilly hotline (215-334-HOME), trained operators evaluate callers’ needs and make appointments with housing counselors or make other referrals. Since the hotline began focusing on foreclosure prevention (its previous focus was on anti-predatory lending), the City has promoted it with inserts into utility bills, public service announcements, and through the outreach efforts outlined below. Philadelphia Legal Assistance manages and staffs the SaveYourHomePhilly hotline. - Foreclosure Prevention Outreach - A roadblock to saving the homes of households facing foreclosure is the paralysis many homeowners feel upon receiving a foreclosure notice. To combat that inertia the City funds proactive outreach to provide information on the services available to homeowners as early in the process as possible. Utilizing its network of Neighborhood Advisory Committees and select citywide organizations, the City supports door-to-door outreach to educate homeowners about their rights in the foreclosure process, the availability of housing counseling and legal support, and the SaveYourHomePhilly hotline through which homeowners can begin to access these services. - Housing Counseling - A key element of the success of the Foreclosure Prevention Program is that every homeowner is matched with an OHCD-funded housing counselor. These counselors are knowledgeable about available sources of mortgage support, have experience negotiating with lenders, and have worked with homeowners in and out of foreclosure on issues such as budgeting, credit repair and meeting the responsibilities of owning a home. For those homeowners who are able to save their homes – more than 40 percent of program participants to date – they emerge from the process not only still in their homes but also more prepared to avoid future financial problems. - Community Legal Services - Although the housing counselors in the Foreclosure Prevention Program are skilled in negotiating with lenders and their attorneys, there are instances in which homeowners facing foreclosure require legal support to resolve their cases. To that end, OHCD funds Community Legal Services (CLS) to provide mortgage foreclosure legal services to homeowners facing foreclosure. CLS attorney/paralegal teams help homeowners responding to foreclosure lawsuits to negotiate with lenders to modify mortgage loan terms to preserve homeownership, or will represent the homeowner to defend foreclosure, as appropriate.

The housing affordability measure illustrates the relationship between income and housing costs. A household that spends 30% or more of its collective monthly income to cover housing costs is considered to be “housing cost-burden[ed].”[1] Those spending between 30% and 49.9% of their monthly income are categorized as “moderately housing cost-burden[ed],” while those spending more than 50% are categorized as “severely housing cost-burden[ed].”[2]
How much a household spends on housing costs affects the household’s overall financial situation. More money spent on housing leaves less in the household budget for other needs, such as food, clothing, transportation, and medical care, as well as for incidental purchases and saving for the future.
The estimated housing costs as a percentage of household income are categorized by tenure: all households, those that own their housing unit, and those that rent their housing unit.
Throughout the period of analysis, the percentage of housing cost-burdened renter households in Champaign County was higher than the percentage of housing cost-burdened homeowner households in Champaign County. All three categories saw year-to-year fluctuations between 2005 and 2023, and none of the three show a consistent trend. However, all three categories were estimated to have a lower percentage of housing cost-burdened households in 2023 than in 2005.
Data on estimated housing costs as a percentage of monthly income was sourced from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS) 1-Year Estimates, which are released annually.
As with any datasets that are estimates rather than exact counts, it is important to take into account the margins of error (listed in the column beside each figure) when drawing conclusions from the data.
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, instead of providing the standard 1-year data products, the Census Bureau released experimental estimates from the 1-year data in 2020. This includes a limited number of data tables for the nation, states, and the District of Columbia. The Census Bureau states that the 2020 ACS 1-year experimental tables use an experimental estimation methodology and should not be compared with other ACS data. For these reasons, and because data is not available for Champaign County, no data for 2020 is included in this Indicator.

This dataset backcasts estimated modeled savings for a subset of 2007-2012 completed projects in the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® Program against normalized savings calculated by an open source energy efficiency meter available at https://www.openee.io/. Open source code uses utility-grade metered consumption to weather-normalize the pre- and post-consumption data using standard methods with no discretionary independent variables. The open source energy efficiency meter allows private companies, utilities, and regulators to calculate energy savings from energy efficiency retrofits with increased confidence and replicability of results. This dataset is intended to lay a foundation for future innovation and deployment of the open source energy efficiency meter across the residential energy sector, and to help inform stakeholders interested in pay for performance programs, where providers are paid for realizing measurable weather-normalized results. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) periodically receives "custom tabulations" of Census data from the U.S. Census Bureau that are largely not available through standard Census products. These datasets, known as "CHAS" (Comprehensive Housing Affordability Strategy) data, demonstrate the extent of housing problems and housing needs, particularly for low income households. The primary purpose of CHAS data is to demonstrate the number of households in need of housing assistance. This is estimated by the number of households that have certain housing problems and have income low enough to qualify for HUD’s programs (primarily 30, 50, and 80 percent of median income). CHAS data provides counts of the numbers of households that fit these HUD-specified characteristics in a variety of geographic areas. In addition to estimating low-income housing needs, CHAS data contributes to a more comprehensive market analysis by documenting issues like lead paint risks, "affordability mismatch," and the interaction of affordability with variables like age of homes, number of bedrooms, and type of building.This dataset is a special tabulation of the 2016-2020 American Community Survey (ACS) and reflects conditions over that time period.
