This is a publication on maternity activity in English NHS hospitals. This report examines data relating to delivery and birth episodes in 2023-24, and the booking appointments for these deliveries. This annual publication covers the financial year ending March 2024. Data is included from both the Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) data warehouse and the Maternity Services Data Set (MSDS). HES contains records of all admissions, appointments and attendances for patients admitted to NHS hospitals in England. The HES data used in this publication are called 'delivery episodes'. The MSDS collects records of each stage of the maternity service care pathway in NHS-funded maternity services, and includes information not recorded in HES. The MSDS is a maturing, national-level dataset. In April 2019, the MSDS transitioned to a new version of the dataset. This version, MSDS v2.0, is an update that introduced a new structure and content - including clinical terminology, in order to meet current clinical practice and incorporate new requirements. It is designed to meet requirements that resulted from the National Maternity Review, which led to the publication of the Better Births report in February 2016. This is the fifth publication of data from MSDS v2.0 and data from 2019-20 onwards is not directly comparable to data from previous years. This publication shows the number of HES delivery episodes during the period, with a number of breakdowns including by method of onset of labour, delivery method and place of delivery. It also shows the number of MSDS deliveries recorded during the period, with a breakdown for the mother's smoking status at the booking appointment by age group. It also provides counts of live born term babies with breakdowns for the general condition of newborns (via Apgar scores), skin-to-skin contact and baby's first feed type - all immediately after birth. There is also data available in a separate file on breastfeeding at 6 to 8 weeks. For the first time information on 'Smoking at Time of Delivery' has been presented using annual data from the MSDS. This includes national data broken down by maternal age, ethnicity and deprivation. From 2025/2026, MSDS will become the official source of 'Smoking at Time of Delivery' information and will replace the historic 'Smoking at Time of Delivery' data which is to become retired. We are currently undergoing dual collection and reporting on a quarterly basis for 2024/25 to help users compare information from the two sources. We are working with data submitters to help reconcile any discrepancies at a local level before any close down activities begin. In this publication we have also included an interactive Power BI dashboard to enable users to explore key NHS Maternity Statistics measures. Latest monthly statistics on Learning Disabilities and Autism (LDA) patients from the Assuring Transformation (AT) collection and Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS). Data on inpatients with learning disabilities and/or autism are being collected both within the AT collection and MHSDS. There are differences in the inpatient figures between the AT and MHSDS data sets and work has been ongoing to better understand these. LDA data from MHSDS are experimental statistics, however, while impacts from the cyber incident are still present they will be considered to be management information. From October 2021, LDA MHSDS data has been collected under MHSDS version 5. A number of comparators are published each month to assess the differences in reporting between the collections. These can be found in the MHSDS datasets section. From 1 July 2022, Integrated Care Boards were established within Integrated Care Systems data and replaced Sustainability and Transformation Plans (STPs). Clinical Commissioning Groups have been replaced by sub-Integrated Care Boards. Data for the AT collection is now submitted by sub-Integrated Care Boards. This has resulted in some renaming within tables and the inclusion of a new Table 5.1b with a patient breakdown by submitting organisation. Patients by originating organisation and commissioning type are still available in Table 5.1a. Data in the tables are now presented by the current organisational structures. Old organisational structures have been mapped to new structures in any time series. As of 23rd May 2024, restraints data for MHSDS February 2024 has been added to the 'Learning disability services monthly statistics from MHSDS: Data tables' page. This is available within Tables 15-18 of v2 of the Data tables as well as within v2 of the csv file.

This publication reports on Admitted Patient Care activity in England for the financial year 2023-24. This report includes but is not limited to analysis of hospital episodes by patient demographics, diagnoses, external causes/injuries, operations, bed days, admission method, time waited, specialty, provider level analysis and Adult Critical Care (ACC). It describes NHS Admitted Patient Care Activity, Adult Critical Care activity and performance in hospitals in England. The purpose of this publication is to inform and support strategic and policy-led processes for the benefit of patient care and may also be of interest to researchers, journalists and members of the public interested in NHS hospital activity in England. The data source for this publication is Hospital Episode Statistics (HES). It contains final data and replaces the provisional data that are released each month. HES contains records of all admissions, appointments and attendances at NHS-commissioned hospital services in England. The HES data used in this publication are called 'Finished Consultant Episodes', and each episode relates to a period of care for a patient under a single consultant at a single hospital. Therefore, this report counts the number of episodes of care for admitted patients rather than the number of patients. This publication shows the number of episodes during the period, with breakdowns including by patient's age, gender, diagnosis, procedure involved and by provider. Percentage of emergency admissions to any hospital in England occurring within 30 days of the last, previous discharge from hospital after admission: indirectly standardised by age, sex, method of admission and diagnosis/procedure. The indicator is broken down into the following demographic groups for reporting: ● All years and female only, male only and both male and female (persons). ● <16 years and female only, male only and both male and female (persons). ● 16+ years and female only, male only and both male and female (persons) ● 16-74 years and female only, male only and both male and female (persons) ● 75+ years and female only, male only and both male and female (persons) Results for each of these groups are also split by the following geographical and demographic breakdowns: ● Local authority of residence. ● Region. ● Area classification. ● NHS and private providers. ● NHS England regions. ● Deprivation (Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) Quintiles, 2019). ● Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STP) & Integrated Care Boards (ICB) from 2016/17. ● Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) & sub-Integrated Care Boards (sub-ICB). All annual trends are indirectly standardised against 2013/14.

Improving outcomes for people with multiple long term conditions is a priority as set out in the NHS long term plan. ADMISSION is a Research Collaborative funded by UK Research and Innovation and the National Institute for Health Research and Care Research that brings together scientists, clinicians and patients from five UK universities and hospitals (Newcastle University and Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, University of Birmingham (PIONEER – the Health Data Research UK Acute Care Hub),  Manchester Metropolitan University, University of Dundeeand University College London) to transform understanding of multiple long-term conditions in hospital patients.

As part of this, PIONEER has curated a highly granular dataset of 119,815 unique hospitalised patients focusing on the impact of multiple long term conditions. The data includes admission details, demography, initial presentation, presenting symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, therapy, medications, imaging, wards, investigations, procedures, operations and outcomes. The current dataset includes admissions from 01-01-2000 to 07-02-2024 but can be expanded to assess other timelines of interest.

Geography: The West Midlands (WM) has a population of 6 million & includes a diverse ethnic & socio-economic mix. UHB is one of the largest NHS Trusts in England, providing direct acute services & specialist care across four hospital sites, with 2.2 million patient episodes per year, 2750 beds & > 120 ITU bed capacity. UHB runs a fully electronic healthcare record (EHR) (PICS; Birmingham Systems), a shared primary & secondary care record (Your Care Connected) & a patient portal “My Health”.

Data set availability: Data access is available via the PIONEER Hub for projects which will benefit the public or patients. This can be by developing a new understanding of disease, by providing insights into how to improve care, or by developing new models, tools, treatments, or care processes. Data access can be provided to NHS, academic, commercial, policy and third sector organisations. Applications from SMEs are welcome. There is a single data access process, with public oversight provided by our public review committee, the Data Trust Committee. Since then, there have been nine further full data collection exercises in order to monitor the cohort members' health, education, social and economic circumstances. These took place when respondents were aged 5 in 1975, aged 10 in 1980, aged 16 in 1986, aged 26 in 1996, aged 30 in 1999-2000 (SN 5558), aged 34 in 2004-2005, aged 42 in 2012 and aged 46 in 2016-18. A range of sub-sample and supplementary surveys have also been conducted, and a separate dataset covering response to BCS70 over all waves is available under SN 5641, 1970 British Cohort Study Response Dataset, 1970-2012.Further information about the BCS70 and may be found on the Centre for Longitudinal Studies website. In 2012, consent was sought for data linkage of health administrative records from the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) to survey data for cohort members in the 1970 British Cohort Study (BCS70). The main aim of this data linkage exercise is to enhance the research potential of the study, by combining administrative record with the rich information collected in the surveys. The 1970 British Cohort Study: Linked Health Administrative Datasets (Hospital Episode Statistics), England, 1997-2022: Secure Access contains information about all hospital admissions in England. The following linked HES data are available: 1) Accident and Emergency (A&E) The A&E dataset details each attendance to an Accident and Emergency care facility in England, between 01-04-2007 and 31-03-2019 (inclusive). It includes major A&E departments, single speciality A&E departments, minor injury units and walk-in centres in England. 2) Admitted Patient Care (APC) The APC data summarises episodes of care for admitted patients, where the episode occurred between 01-04-1997 and 31-03-2022 (inclusive). 3) Critical Care (CC) The CC dataset covers records of critical care activity between 01-04-2009 and 31-03-2022 (inclusive). 4) Out Patient (OP) The OP dataset lists the outpatient appointments between 01-04-2003 and 31-03-2022 (inclusive). 5) Emergency Care Dataset (ECDS) The ECDS lists the emergency care appointments between 01-04-2020 and 31-03-2022 (inclusive). 6) Consent data The consents dataset describes consent to linkage, and is current at the time of deposit CLS/ NHS Digital Sub-licence agreementNHS Digital has given CLS permission for onward sharing of the Next Steps/HES dataset via the UKDS Secure Lab. In order to ensure data minimisation, NHS Digital requires that researchers only access the HES variables needed for their approved research project. Therefore, the HES linked data provided by the UKDS to approved researchers will be subject to sub-setting of variables. The researcher will need to request a specific sub-set of variables from the Next Steps HES data dictionary, which will subsequently make available within their UKDS Secure Account. Once the researcher has finished their research, the UKDS will delete the tailored dataset for that specific project. Any party wishing to access the data deposited at the UK Data Service will be required to enter into a Licence agreement with CLS (UCL), in addition to the agreements signed with the UKDS, provided in the application pack.Latest edition informationFor the third edition (August 2024), the ECDS and Consents datasets were added and medical records for the financial years 2017-2022 were added. These indicators are designed to accompany the SHMI publication. The SHMI methodology does not make any adjustment for patients who are recorded as receiving palliative care. This is because there is considerable variation between trusts in the way that palliative care is recorded. Contextual indicators on the percentage of provider spells and deaths reported in the SHMI where palliative care was recorded at either treatment or specialty level are produced to support the interpretation of the SHMI. Notes: 1. On 1st January 2025, North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust (trust code RAP) was acquired by Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RAL). This new organisation structure is reflected from this publication onwards. 2. This indicator is designed to accompany the SHMI publication. The SHMI includes all deaths reported of patients who were admitted to non-specialist acute trusts in England and either died while in hospital or within 30 days of discharge. Deaths related to COVID-19 are excluded from the SHMI. A contextual indicator on the percentage of deaths reported in the SHMI which occurred in hospital and the percentage which occurred outside of hospital is produced to support the interpretation of the SHMI. Notes: 1. For discharges in the reporting period April 2024 - May 2024, almost all of the records for Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (trust code RBL) have been submitted without an NHS number. This will have affected the linkage of the HES data to the ONS death registrations data and may have resulted in a smaller number of deaths occurring outside hospital within 30 days of discharge being identified for this trust than would have otherwise been the case. The results for this trust should therefore be interpreted with caution. 2.
